I worked in a school district in British Columbia, Canada long ago. They were the second (?) district in BC to institute this same idea. In the end it was successful. You can find them at http://www.nisgaa.bc.ca/ (note the kids with macbooks on the main page). I'm sure they have a plethora of info on the do's and don'ts on the subject.
Sorry Nisga'a school district for all the traffic I could be sending you;)
I took my old laptop, added a wireless card (along with the wired nic), put a simple firewall ruleset on which allows ports for VOIP to forward through it and then attached my wire-only grandstream ip phone. Now my ip phone is essentially wireless. I also removed the hard drive and remastered knoppix to do what I needed and now the laptop can weather power outages up to three hours. I can lug my phone/laptop combo around the house without needing to run new network connections. Longest uptime on the laptop was 144 days.
I took an electronics course years ago. I was wearing a fleece sweater in a dry climate in winter. For some odd reason I could not get my circuit to work properly. That damn led would not stay on when it was supposed to. So I thought I would check out some of the other students circuits. Each time I walked up to one the guy would swear because his circuit suddenly would malfunction. It took me about five such instances to realize it was me! I radiated for about six feet around me and lost a few friends for that day... Mind you, I wasn't melting anything.
I just had to post this one....
My favorite SSID was one I saw with the full street address of some brilliant guy. I guess if he gets lost in town he just has to go wardriving and find his AP.
