These are all good points. I lived in Arizona for many years, in the east valley. I recently relocated to Colorado (yay for me, according to the list).
There's a good reason why the cost of living is relatively low in Phoenix. The heat is oppresive, and while there are several large high-tech companies there, good luck finding a job.
Phoenix has been trying for a few years now to focus on making itself a biotech hub. I think they've made progress there, but that means even less future opportunity for us technology folks.

That's ridiculous. I've been programming for over a decade, but I just graduated last December. What did I learn programming-wise? Not much that is relevant today. I was already writing Fibre Channel drivers, but did I learn about Fibre Channel? Absolutely not. It's too new.
You don't get an education to learn new technology. You get an education to learn the essentials of programming and software engineering. Then you get a job in the real world and apply those basic premises.
One of the big advantages to furthurnet (and other P2P systems, furthurnet doesn't have the corner on this market) is the fact that if multiple people are offering up a show, a downloader can retrieve it from multiple hosts simultaneously, greatly decreasing the amount of time required.

Whether he's employed and whether O.S. projects contributed to his employement prospects aren't really important, are they? The guy is obviously talented. I suspect his employment prospects are a result of his ability, not a result of the result of his abilities. At least, I'd hope that's the case.

Yeah, everybody knows if your site can't handle being /.'ed, you have no business putting it up in the first place.

I'd like to receive a paycheck. Yes, I am employed, technically. I haven't been paid 2 out of the last 3 pay periods. So, a paycheck would be nice.
I wouldn't mind having a job where I didn't have to say this.
So, quitcherbitchin. 2-3 years ago maybe you had a valid point. Now you just sound like a whiny baby.
