I don't what the original japanese text is, but this translation is actually different:
Said Kutaragi: "If asked whether Sony's level of manufacturing technology declined, I have to admit it under the present circumstance. But Sony intends to prove its technical capabilities by manufacturing the necessary number of blue lasers from now on."
I reckon that actual PS3 hardware is actually very good. Cell is really impressive, if you use SPUs (I do everyday, and love them - would never be able to do 1/10th of what I'm doing with them on "another console"). On the other hand PPU is utter crap, but considering it's the exact same core used in "another console", it's probably not that relevant. RSX is a very decent GPU, despite not matching the ridiculous numbers announced at E3 2005.
The big issue is that Sony seems unable to manufacture the full system.
Disclaimer: I'm somehow biased since I work mostly on PS3. But things I have to complain about are on the software side, not hardware...
By the way, GTA:SA has 'broken box office records' in the UK - in it's opening weekend it sold 26million pounds worth of units - beating Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (the film) into second place.
[...]Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has smashed yet more UK sales records, selling over a million units in just nine days - making it into the fastest selling game, the fastest to hit a million units, and the fourth biggest selling PS2 title ever. [...]

I'm really impressed by the cluelessness of LucasArts' management.
It seems that some guys have started such a project a while ago..
Well, as written on the main page, the current project is the Phantasy Star Online Homebrew Server. Not that I'm dogging the servers that Sega has; however, anyone can say, with confidence, that their servers aren't going to be up forever.
Once it becomes unprofitable and the costs for the servers become an enconomical liability, they'll take 'em down.
(emphasis added)
Their project seems rather dead (was it even born?) but there might more interest for it now..
Being a professional game developer, i must admit i have a good number of game-related promotional t-shirts.
But most of them are so damn ugly, that there is no way I can wear them! They might be useful, to wear while sleeping, if you sleep alone, but otherwise they're just an insult to your girlfriend.
That's why, most of them (expect Sony's ones, which are usually quite nice) stay in the drawer, and soon end their life as disposable floorcloth, when something is spilled on the floor.
Regardless, is the show of women a good sign? If it helps create diversity in video games and help manufacturers build more innovative games than "Adventures of Barbie," then this can only help the industry.
Here, in Europe, new game genres, less focused on violence / male stuff, make suprisingly good results.
Eye Toy is the best example. It is innovative, and appeals at much to men than women, according to my personal experience. And what is really unbelivable (and a good thing) is that it is topping UK Charts. It sells better than newest pokemons!
Fellow slashdotters can also admire this this week's runner-up : Norton Antivirus, who moved from 39th to 8h position, thanks to Microsoft. Exepect an even better result next week..
Most notably the LAN party with in which I could not get rtsp working on all the computers because the MS users did not even know where their firewalls were.
Do you really think lan parties are the major concern of most people? I consider people going to lan parties as, at least a little, computer litterate (as opposed to mom and dad).
No doubt, many users will not even know they have a firewall and certainly will not know how to disable it.
One annoying sideeffect is that there will be more crappy app.
I've been suprised by ICQlite (aka ICQ AsBloatedAsNotLite now). I installed this stuff on my xp laptop, and it disabled without telling me the builtin firewall to try to get incoming file transfer working. It was a windows system message box (and i'm not even sure it's standard, since i think it appeared after a ms hotfix) which told me that a dangerous app wants to disable the firewall. It doesn't affect me since i'm behind a decent linux box, but i don't like this attitude.
I guess more and more crappy apps will do the same, as builtin firewall will be enabled by default. And it might be even more dangerous for people who think they have some, at least basic, protection.
But I still consider it's better to get firewall enabled by default. If a user is so clueless he can't disable it, well, he deserves to have it enabled, for everyone who would have been the indirect victim of his owned box, if not for himseld.. But a firewall SHOULD NOT be disabled by any application except direct action of the user..
The big issue is that Sony seems unable to manufacture the full system.

BTW, this game is really good. Not your average rts/fps clone, but for those who like different games, worth a try .
