  1. Cost estimate based on improductivity on What's The Actual Cost of A Virus? · · Score: 1

The is the cost of having people on your team making sure that the protection policies and software are up to date. If there were no theats companies would have this people doing something more productive.

For the companies that are vulnerable and get infected the costs are even greater, because once the virus is inside the company you will have most of your IT people cleaning the mess. Remove the virus machine by machine, you will have non IT people stoped, not working, because their PC is not OK.

And from my experience people don't pay attention to the warning e-mails or post-it notes telling them not to open suspicious files.

And don't forget that some pira... err... copyright rule breaking is motivated by people simply not wanting to wait for the release in their DVD zone. Like the music industry is saying now, p2p also happens because people whant stuff that they are not delivering.

  4. Re:we need more Generalists on The Rise and Rise of IT Administrators · · Score: 2, Insightful

    From my experience:

1 - Projects need 'Managers' and managers should be 'Generalists' so that they can see the whole picture and coordinate the 'specialists'!

2 - The problem is that you can only be a 'Generalist' and a 'Good Manager' if you make a carrer from developmento to management. But the companies usualy hire managers that don't have real development experience instead of promoting developpers inside the company.

3 - Everyone this days (including me when i was in the same situation) wants to make a carrer in 5 years! Every time you are real productive you move up, and need to learn new skills, then you are never really productive for more that 6 months every 2 years.

4 - It can happen that you move ??up?? until you reach your level of incopetence and can't get promoted any longer :-) but this could lead the conversation to FLAMES.

I beleave you are reffering to REX5000. I have a REX6000 PDA, and it allows for data imput. It actually has a toutch-screen and an old ZILOG Z80 processor. You could develop applications for it using a toolkit. Unfortunatly Intel bought Xircom and discontinued the product.

PDAs and SmartPhones have diferent purposes, diferent interface aproaches, and will probably coexist for a long time. Someone who switches a PDA for a SmartPhone probably didn't need a PDA at all, but a more sofisticated Phone/Organizer. I only hope that SmartPhones will force PDA manufacturers to lower the prices.
