Sorry to nitpick but Mac OSX is not strictly speaking UNIX. It's BSD which departed from the rest of the Unix world a long time ago. It is safe from the SCO nonsense because all the issues were settled with AT&T at that time. It is a real UNIX like OS though. And you are so wrong about Joe Blow being able to write to root. The first reply to your post explains it perfectly.
Let Microsoft buy Google if they want, people are starting to realise it's limitations and biases anyway. I think there should be a healthy turnover of search engines to keep things fresh. How about grub.org? Early days but looking promising. Distributed crawling of the web! Even better, someone with more knowledge than myself set up a non-profit, not affiliated with 'the global leader in paid search inclusion' project to do the same thing in our computer's spare time.
Just as the pace is accelerating to commodity parts and more open standards MS decides to go as in house as possible. Let them do what they want. They are dooming themselves to becoming an irrelevance.
Relax dude, you are correct. OS X is BSD (running on PPC) plus a GUI tightly integrated with hardware (and dependent on some ROM) and some specific libraries. On the other hand I really am full of shit;-)
I was having difficulty understanding what you were saying to begin with. Then I started reading your post again in the squeaky, tearful voice that Windows users generally adopt when something isn't working and it made more sense. I'm sure iTunes' performance _is_ terrible on Windows but fortunately there are two solutions. DON'T USE IT! Or you could reformat your drive and install a proper OS. Your choice.
Ok, so it's not the most vital thing I need broadband for but I bet my near constant use of Internet Radio is the biggest contributer behind Apple's humongous system updates.
Good point, but more sophisticated technology tends to replace older stuff. They're hosed.
Huh? Who modded this funny? I'm making a serious suggestion here! ;-)
/.? (I in no way condone the drinking of alcyfrolic drinks by those not legally entitled to do so.)
By an odd coincidence I was drinking a White Russian when I logged on.
What do other people drink while they are reading
Just use a White Russian cocktail (1 part vodka, 1 part Kahlua, ~3 parts milk) instead of milk. That's what The Dude would do.

"How cocky are you feeling now, Mac elite?"....Aha! At least they are now recognising that we are an elite! ;-)
Right, that's it sunshine, straight on to my Foe list. Oh, you posted as AC. Oh, I get it! Turnip.
I was going to type a reply but M$ would probably patent 'ASCII data entry by means of an alpha-numeric input device' before I could hit Post. Darn.

My ass. I've seen the screenshots and its an ugly inerface. Any linux desktop is better than that. What were they thinking?
