I admit it - but I want to know why some companies add functionality while leaving some code broken.

A fine example of this is ICQ. The original product, which (for those of us with 6 digit UIN know) was simple and elegant with a few bugs - well not it has evolved to a monster of a chat program, with features most of us couldn't support if we wanted to.

    Just my two sense.

The bottom line, unless you are MC Hammer and can make a killing living out of the trunk of your car with two albums already before the record labels pick you up, then RIAA and everyone else will stomp on you.

WhytTiger says: 7.1 surround? MP3 Playback? Is it just me, or are these things unnecessary on a PORTABLE device that will only accept proprietary discs (no burning MP3's and playing them).

I see what you are getting at here, but it's Sony for crying out loud. The same guys that invented MiniDisc and has changed it every 6 months to screw with the competition (sounds like something my friend Bill Gates does with his company).

In all honesty, I think that they will change the disc to look like or be similar enough to a MD so that you could use the ATRAC format to transfer your music securely to a disc capable of being read by the Playboy device.

If not, then it's only another Sony hopeful that just won't make it in the real world. I mean, I love MD, but the lack of acceptance due to things like MP3 blows it out of the water. I would much rather carry about a MD over a CD anyday - it fits in my pocket and is less likely to break.

However, if they can introduce a burnable version on this 1.8GB dual layer disc, then I say go for it.

With that in mind, my question to you is this:

Has the data always been there, but just represented in a different way? Or does the data actually change as the molecular structure changes?

Don't get me wrong - I agree that it doesn't have to be digital to be data, but the focus of this story seemed to lean towards collective media, not data.

Another reply here stated that you could count a blank 700MB CDR as data. I suppose, but to me that's just a media form waiting for data to be written to it - unless you consider it to be a statistic of 1 more blank CD in the pool of blank media.

Sounds like a configuration issue on your end. I have no problems viewing PDFs, JPGs, or other non-harmful attachments. You can even tell Outlook to stop annoying you with the bogus "potentially harmful" message if you're sure about it.

Yes, this is the fun-to-find feature that is now one of the many security defaults in Office. Similar to the macro-security in Excel, Outlook and Outlook Express disable certain typs of attachments from being viewed, such as exe bat pif pdf and others. It's a real pain in the ass if you've never had to deal with it before.

They mean smart as in the Outlook Web Access Client which doesn't work probably in any browser other than MSIE and uses (as always) their non-standard DHTML object model?

I call BS -- I use Outlook Web Access with Firebird from home with absolutely no problems. It works differently than it does if you use IE, but it still works.

Well, I'm not really sure what either of you are after, but then again I don't utilize Firebird. I do, however, use both Outlook and OWA, and feel both have limitations. Two of my biggest gripes have to do with accounts:
    1. I can't have more than one Exchange server per Outlook Profile
    2. I can't use more than one inbox per profile. (you can filter by incoming account, but what's fun in that if the filter breaks?)

Personally, I use Outlook because it is the one that I can configure to my specs the best, but there are still a large number of issues that I'd like to have corrected before then produce new code. (Ahem, 2003...)

I suppose that my view is a little jaded, coming from the first university to implement school-wide Wi-Fi, not to mention Gigabit connections to all of it's buildings - including dorm units.

While there, I was involved in a project designed to bring technology into the classrooms. The key sides of every arguement was:
    1. Kids don't need it.
    2. We only need one per class room.
    3. Every kid needs a laptop to be successful.

Of course, each one had its own woes of "Where does the money come from," and "How do we prevent them from goofing off?"

Well, the reality is this - any system, when administered properly, can be locked down. That means they have a large choice - Mac, Windows, Linux, Novell for Windows. It's all in the planning. If they make the correct roadmap, they will require less TCO to maintain it.

Someone here asked why we would buy soemthing that losses it's value overnight, but you are looking at it for the wrong reasons. Will it be able to play HalfLife 2? Probably not, can the encylopedia be updated with the latest content from the web, showing how California elected another actor for Governor? Why yes, it can...

Technology is the future - I'm not saying that they don't need to learn to read and write, but that is what elementary school is for. I don't know about you, but I learned to read and write in cursive well before the end of third grade (hell, maybe sooner).

Vocabulary can still be taught, literary works of art can be read (this content won't change), and RIAA can get involved to provide instruments to children after they sue the parents.

And - if you made it this far - no one ever said these kids were taking them home and running around with them. That's what home directories and mapped drives are for. You should be able to sit down at any machine, log in, and do your work with the standard set of tools (office, adobe or macromedia suite, internet explorer).

You see, laptops are simply an effective use of space in an already overcrowded school environment. I can easily stash 30 laptops in a cabinent faster than I can move 30 desktops and monitors out of the way. That is why they have choosen laptops.

Better watch out - your kids will have this luxury too!
