This is so True I used to to support for ISP's for 4 years. 100% accurate. the average person has no idea what they use. One person told me "I use the brown box by the clock" for a mail client.

I use external USB hard drives with 400GB storage per drive. Swap drives at locations weekly with a spair set. Fast no reaccuring costs and does the job. Tapes are too slow, online is too slow / cost can be a lot for a lot of data.

No I am using www.spectravoice.com they use SIP or IAX and will give you the settings to use any device as you see fit. you need to fill out a form saying you agree to there terms for using your own device. They have a few exchanges in canada mainly in ontario / quebec i think i dont remember i have a 416 number. it was a pain getting it since they are all french really and i dont speak it but i got it working and its great... other then that yea most use mgcp go to www.voip-info.org and look up providers there are other ones too to choose from that use SIP cheers!

I am studying for my ccie voice on my own. I cant skip anything, period. If I dont know about someone i WILL force myself to learn it no matter how long it takes period...No matter how much money it costs.. learning on your own is much harder then following class material. If I read it, i read it, if i didnt learn it, its meaningless.

Some providers provide e911 service and 411 directory. The problem is this. voip means u can move and take the number when u dial 911 it goes to the local psap. meaning getting a canada number in usa then dialing 911 will not work.

I know about multi line solutions and rollover lines. thats not the point its the same. WHen it goes down what do u tell customers? u have no control over these things. "ahh ya at&t is fixing it sorry" they will get a busy tone. if u had a nailed up P2p link with fallover to your HQ with asterisk or call manager u can route calls better and have more control. i used to work for a provider in canada that offered multi line voip and well it sucked. "ya we are down" opps. I know u have no dial tone. Its OK for backup lines or remote lines to say god knows where for cheap LD but NEVER only for production right now...

so what. no business is going to use some voip line (www.vonage.com) for services. I can see asterisk or cisco call manager for businesses but i just dont see why a business would use a consumer grade service. The local lines / LD savings arent that big of a price break for the chance of loosing business...Now if they would centeralize and use asterisk i can see that being good.
