  1. Re:hosts file on Browsing Frugally Without Wasting Bandwidth? · · Score: 1

I agree! This is the easiest way to eliminate ad traffic. In fact, I don't have limits on my connection, but I use the hosts file to kill as many ads as I come across.

  2. Re:seems about right on 300 gigabytes in the size of a DVD? · · Score: 1

With the new storage capacity, I would expect an even higher-quality (audio and video) version of movie to be on it. Maybe just so one of the LOTR would fit on one disc.

  3. multiple DVD-R discs with PAR2 on A Storage Solution for Lots of Digital Photos? · · Score: 1

As a general backup solution, I still have files from 1984 that are readable. These go back to my junior high school files from an Apple ][e. Obviously this method has been refined over time, but it works. It takes some work, but I'm paranoid about losing old data.

    1. Use high-quality brand DVD-R blanks. Currently about 35 cents/4.4 GiB.
    2. Verify all writes to make sure it was at least written correctly. Long term stability is unknown at best.
    3. Make multiple copies and store them in different locations. I store one here, one at my parent's house, and one at my sister's house.
    4. As part of the backup, generate PAR2 files. http://parchive.sourceforge.net/
    5. When the next cool storage technology comes out, switch everything to it. I used to backup to floppies, then switched everything over to 230 MiB MO, then 700 MiB CD-R, and now 4.4 GiB DVD-R.

I also keep all digital pictures online. Large hard drives make this so much easier.

  4. Battery = UPS on Laptops with the Longest Battery Life? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Who actually uses a laptop without plugging it in anymore? Batteries are pretty much mini-UPS systems that allow a few minutes of work here and there. I get nervous if I'm unplugged for more than a few minutes.

I think I would like a laptop with a small super-light battery since I'm not going to rely on it for long anyway.

  5. Time = Money... how to slow them down? on Stopping Overseas Fax Spam? · · Score: 1

This idea won't stop them, but it should slow them down. On a staticy phone line, faxes drop down to slower speeds and retransmit lines that fail error correction.

Any way to rig up a fax modem to receive faxes at the slowest rate possible and make the fax receipt take as long as possible? When I receive fax spam, I wonder if there are ways to tie up the sending machine for as long as possible. It would take them longer to send faxes. If enough of us do this, it should have an effect on how many the assholes can send.

Time = money, and at least we can try hitting them in Time.
