Yeah I've never run across this. If it gets installed on the end user's system, then it is more confirmation to me that InstallShield absolutely blows.
I'm so sick of companies thinking they'll somehow become relevant because they put reminders of their products in every nook and cranny on my system. Sun, like all other half-wit companies, feels the need to put useless tray icons in there to brand the user's computer. You'd think after the Internet's collective hate of RealPlayer they would have learned that the systray is not for advertising. Besides, people don't care what Java is, they want to look at what is on the page. But no, they have to sit there in the tray, completely useless. And lets not discuss needing to run a program 24/7 that monitors for updates to Java, or installing a control panel.
Sorry Java, you're not nearly as important as you think you are. QuickTime commits the same set of sins, which is why I swear by QuickTime Alternative, it is a bit less annoying.
You know, the one thing I absolutely HATED about AJAX was how there was no delay when I loaded a page. For many moons, I have longed for the five second delay that a Java applet on a webpage incurs. I knew I was in for an interactive, highly responsive, good-looking user experience when my browser stumbled momentarily, as it loads the slim, petite Java runtime into the browser. It gave me plenty of time to prepare myself for the life-changing experience that ONLY an applet could deliver!
But now, I can be happy once again. Thank you Sun! And with a hip name to go along with it, as well! JavaFX! I wonder if it is compatible with WinFX? Or how about ActiveX?
I've read so many predictions of Microsoft's demise here because of (admittedly well-founded) flaws in Vista. Surely this article is wrong! Maybe RoughlyDrafted can set the record straight for me...
And citing roughlydrafted is better? Sorry, couldn't resist.
What, how can you not take a site that has poorly photoshopped heads of corporate executives onto movie posters seriously?! That is the epitome of credibility! Besides, it even has pretty pie charts and sound bites in the articles. Which is good, because I feel very informed when I read it. It is fair and balanced, that's what. Anyway, I'm off to find some more anti-Apple bias in the media!
Well put. You see blowhards on here who insist that Linux should be hard to use, because, damn it, it was hard for them to learn it. Or some tripe about how computers should require a license to use. And it amuses me when I inquire why OSS alternatives have a hard time parsing C++ for autocomplete: "it's hard to do." Cry me a river, of course it is. I thought the many eyes of open source could solve *any* problem? In reality, nobody wants to, so it stays in a state below half-assed. Visual Studio limps on by and at least gets right enough to be useful.
Visual Studio is far from perfect, but for a tool that I used day in and day out, I don't have many complaints overall. How many programs can you really say that about?
Odd, everyone here is so certain that GOffice will compete with MS Office. Competition is needed here, but I'm not amused. Surely someone has an explanation? I've been TERRIBLY deceived by all of you!
But they SAID they weren't evil, therefore that MUST make them good! Or, at least, that is how I fit into my naive worldview! Everything is either absolutely evil (Microsoft) or absolutely good (Google). There is no in-between.
I'm sure someone will step up and help them save face in this embarrassing situation! When in doubt, you can always try to change the subject, that has worked well in the previous thread. Now that I think about it, we need a RoughlyDrafted-esque site for Google, anyone up to the task?
I can track down the origin of this readme.txt file I downloaded several years ago. I feel quite dirty about it to this day, and consider it one of the great mistakes of my youth.
If you don't like using Microsoft at work, then find another job that lets you use the technology that you want. Quit painting things like they're holding a gun to your head to use these products, because they're not. If you're passionate about not using them, then why do you continue to use them at work?
Give the guys at Roughly Drafted a week or two to point out all the reasons this sort of assessment is downright wrong, while decorating the article with all sorts of nice pie charts, graphs, and equally questionable statistics. Then we will know what really happened. Because the mainstream media certainly has an anti-Apple agenda, we can't trust just ANY statistics.

That pretty much destroys his argument. At least Flash has the decency to be less than 30MB to install.

So I have to remember to do EACH and EVERY one of those things so it "Just Works?"
Unbelievable.
They'll need to build on Java if they want to keep pace with Microsoft in that category. ;)
Its more complicated than that. The MS FUD is always viewed with skepticism, but the anti-MS FUD is ALWAYS right. Full stop.
Crap, you beat me to it.
Luckily, THIS year is the year of Linux on the desktop, however!

Good point, I admit to caring about this stuff way more than one should.

Easy mod points on slashdot. I need to feel like I fit in, so I do whatever the consensus is. Don't hate me because I conform!
I don't see what the big deal is here. Everyone should just use Google. They said they don't do any evil, so they must not.

This confirms it: meta-discussion of Slashdot makes for karma whoring. Now, can I recurse again and have that be the case?
"This is our groupthink, it doesn't need to make sense. Now shut up and conform so you get your mod points!"

I'd like to see some sources that back this statement up.

I wasn't shocked and appalled until I heard what they said about open source. THAT is what makes this a true injustice, my friends!
Thank goodness all this negative press that we put on the front page of Slashdot is actually doing something! Take that Microsoft! EAT IT CAPITALISM!!
