  1. What kind of customers do you have? on Searching for a Satellite Pager? · · Score: 1

Personally, I would *never* do business with a one-man company in any long run deal. If you get sick (or worse), I have no service anymore. It's a bad, bad business decision. As others said: you do not need a satellite pager. You need a staff.

  2. For nothing. on Bruce Perens Tells Linus Torvalds To Cool It · · Score: 2, Insightful

Ok, lots of arguments about closed/open, but the bottom line is: bitkeeper was made available free of charge. There were of course conditions involved in this deal, but they were quite non-restrictive. No one was forbidden of working in free solutions. Linus Itself was clear about his willingness in embracing open tools once they meet the needs. Nevertheless, it's a deal.

It's a fact that only a few individuals who develop the kernel are bound to OSDL, but OSDL is the entity to whom Bitkeeper was handed and thus is expected to go along with the deal.

Tridgell is bound to OSDL, just like Linus. He was expected to follow his employer's commitments.

People can argue endlessly about if Bitmover overreacted, if Linus' initial decision was wise, it open source is the one and only way, if reverse engineering is good or bad, if Linus is a moron , etc. I have no strong opinions about that.

But the bottom line is: Tridgell did something unnecessary just because he wanted to.

If you do not like the game, get out of if or change it. Linus is pissed because he lost a precious tool because of actions wich did not had any useful goal. This is stupid and I give him full reason in this respect.

  3. My own little review... on A Look at the Newly Released Mozilla Firefox 0.9 · · Score: 3, Interesting

Writing this in 0.9. Just downloaded.

Installer looks nice. But an attempt to install over an older FF version brings an "overwrite or quit" dialog. NO UPGRADE OPTION????? Ok, overwrite.

Up and runnig. First thing: apply theme. Choice made, installing via web...
    crash.
restart FF. Theme shows up but no preview. "Use theme" button available for the new theme. Several clicks on it but FF remains silent.
Quit FF. Restart. Original theme still in place.
Ok, let's reinstall. Selecting new theme, pressing "Uninstall" button...
    Silence. No messages.
Quit FF. Restart. Theme stil there.
    Deep breath.
    Back to texturizer.net. Installing again. 98%, 99%, 100%!
Progress bar goes away. Silence. No messages.
No new theme in the list.
    Restart FF
Still no new theme in the list.

Is this really a 0.9 RC? Seems to me that a little more quality assurance (read: careful test scripts) should help a lot.

"Paying taxes is similar to giving to charity: you are contributing part of your income for the benefit of others"

    I have to disagree here.

By paying taxes, you are not only giving benefit to others, but also to yourself. Taxes pay infrastructure, services, and much of the stuff that allows us to live in these days comfort level.

Sure most of us disagree about the destination given to tax money; however, its far from truth to say the money is only for benefit of others.
