This looks to me almost identical to spam! Think about it: they are using YOUR bandwidth, for something YOU don't want to send/receive. Now, if the RIAA plans on paying me every time they do this, that is fine with me, but otherwise, don't touch.

Just a thought as well, would it be possible to put something in the motd to the affect of: Owners of ANY disruptive automated clients agree to pay the amount of $9999999999999999 to the server owner. ? Just a thought, I'm not a legal expert by any means.

  6. Small steps on Linux & Education - How To Get It For Your School · · Score: 1

I'm a freshmen at our local high school, however I consider myself rather skilled in Linux. I've been using it for about 2 years. This year I took CS1. I got to know the teacher rather well. He's a pretty down to earth guy, and when we were doing our OS lesson I suggested that we do a lab on Linux. Linux was already installed as a dual boot on the labs computers, so yes we were already a step ahead, but he had no idea how to teach the lab. So, I volunteered. In short I wowed some people, and even gave away some burned cds of Linux.

I managed to effect a class of students. That's not too much. The problem with Linux is that school administration/teachers don't understand it and (gasp) hence fear it. You're best bet is finding a teacher and suggesting it to them. If they seem rather close minded (like yours), you might want to try showing them what it can do, or some of the licenses. Describe the Linux community.

IMHO if you start small, you'll get your point across that CS without Linux is worthless. Perhaps after you convince your teacher with his/her help you could approach the super intendant or CS department head and get it added to the curiculum. You might have to tutor a teacher or two, but overall I think your goal is possible.

  7. Legal case on AOL 5 Gets $8 Billion Class Action Suit · · Score: 1

I'm no lawyer, so I'm curious if there ware any legal experts out there who would say if the claim was valid. My particular wonder was if warning them about adding AOL As their 'default' isp.

    Websters defines default as:
Computer Science. A particular value for a variable that is assigned automatically by an operating system and remains in effect unless canceled or overridden by the operator.

From what I know, this 'option' can't be "canceled or overridden" (at least easily), although I have not witnessed it first hand.

Again, I'm just curious as to the base of their claims, and I hope the people win the lawsuit. I'm sure AOL didn't just happen to make it that way. It's good someone stood up to them.

I don't see many reasons to take servers offline. The only advantage you have is that your server is not prone to attacks. Since your servers should be secure anyway, I don't see any reason to take them down.

If they aren't Y2k compatible (if you don't have a y2k server, you're in some deep shit...), booting them after Y2K will not work, duh.

I suppose the final decisions come from the bosses, the ones at the top of the company, who don't know that much about the technology. I'm not trying to make them look bad, because it's not their area of the business, so they should stay out, and let the sysadmin decide.

I used to be a windows guy, and then a mac os guy, and now I'm a Linux guy. What they see as a "Lack of Standards", is a chance for me to customize my box more. The only reason Linux seems to be less standardized is because there are so many choices. And frankly, if everything were the same, it'd plain suck. Those are just my thoughts, I'm sure some of you would agree, and some don't. I just thought the perspectice of the article was not fair, since it's going to be that way for a lot of OS's.

This person really must've wanted a raise, because he came to conclude eggdrop was a hacking utility and BitchX was an application to get root access. Um, yeah whatever.
