I am running JDK 1.4 patchlevel 3 on my FreeBSD 4.8 Release p3 server. It is compiled as native threads. Patchlevel 3 was the first release that worked for me with native threads, but required a command line option to make to build. (going from memory as i've had it since march) Before I upgraded, I ran 1.3.1 p7 for a time with green threads.
Linux versions of the JDK will run fine as root, but tend to crash with certain apps and services. Tomcat is known to crash with a linux jdk as a non root user.
The Native build has problems running JSSE (sun ssl library) on jdk 1.4.
For those interested in Java on FreeBSD, I suggest subscribing the the freebsd-java list on freebsd.org. You could also search the bug database for the many problems with the current releases.
The difference is that you can get an Apple laptop fixed. IBM laptops have major parts like the hard drive, or motherboard go out in a year.
My wife works for pfizer, and believe me there are a lot of broken IBM products there. (since they will only use IBM)
My wife bought an original ibook which had a bad LCD display. (went out after 3 days) Apple had her send it in fedex for free and returned it to her within 48 hours. Thats service. In comparison, my old boss bought a dell laptop which had a bad display. It failed after a week. Dell wouldn't fix it, so he returned the laptop. He went back to his old pentium 100 compaq.
Apple computers work. That is the whole point in buying them over a PC that overheats and breaks.
"Closed source hardware" is an advantage. Windows sucks because microsoft has to support every bad nvidia and intel chipset made. Why do pcs still have printer ports, serial ports, and floppy drives? Even linux fans usually claim that Linux runs better on Macs or Sparcs. x86 hardware sucks.
Bash reminds me of linux. I am running OSX because I don't like linux! My default shell on all unix operating systems is tcsh. In fact, I switched to tcsh as a result of using Mac OS 10.1.
I wish Apple would make up their mind. It seems like they change something important in the Unix subsystem in each release. They gutted the printing system for cups in 10.2 (which was an improvement). The other odd thing about this behavior is 10.2 modeled FreeBSD userland, unlike previous NetBSDish releases. FreeBSD still comes with sendmail by default, why not Darwin/Mac OS X?
