We are trying to over at http://www.storagerevolution.com/. It is a new open source project created by a bunch of people with the same problems. Unlike the SNIA based aperi, it is not vendor controlled, it is totally controlled by users.
Data management is the largest problem we face, and the only tools to even start managing this problem are for the enterprise market. They are totally out of reach to the small to medium business, in both complexity and price.
We would appriciate everyones feedback as to what is important to them. This is the most valuable content anyone could deliver at this stage in the process.
Have they updated MailScanner yet? last time I used it to create a mail gateway, I had to use Mandrake 8.2 just to have compatable binarys (this was when 10 was available). In my opinion it is a great package.
Quickbooks, Act, etc. Most major vendors are porting their code to.net. 6 months ago I asked the same question, and didnt hve an answer, but now I'm strting to see things being released.
How cheap is hardware getting these days? I mean really, I can build a brand new AMD system for less that 300$. Why would I want to run a stripped down version of XP on an older system? Half of older hardware (video/sound, etc..) drivers are not even supported in XP due to the companys being out of business. Most people only use Outlook/IE/Office and that runs fine under XP on a Pentium 2 300 with 256mb ram. This just looks like a way for Micro$oft to market XP-Lite in the US. Hardware is Cheap, It's all the damn software that is expensive. That will still be the problem for people wanting to upgrade to XP. It's all the custom DOS accounting packages/etc.. that do not run under XP is why most of my customers are still running 98 anyways.
I had a problem lately where one of my mail servers got bombarded with spam to nonexistant users. Normally this is not a problem, but the volume caused the bouncebacks to trigger most RBL's to add this mail server as an open relay. Since most of the emails were not really coming from yahoo.com, hotmail.com, etc... I spent the next few weeks cleaning up all the RBL lists. This kinda puts me in a bad place, now I have to delete any email that does not relate to a user on the system. Im just waiting to get bitched at from some client because some user cant spell properly...
I have developed with quite a few languages, and I must say that VS.NET is a great product. I know everyone here is as anti windows as they come, but in the business world that is what makes the money. I personally cant wait for it to come out of beta.
This is going to be a tech support nightmare. I already get people calling and telling me their ISP is netscape just because their home page is set to netscape.com. They could have just named it aol basic or something like that to use bigger known brand name. Or is aol trying to hide from their own bad publicity by changing names?
I was using an ISP that had problems with 2 spammers years ago. Since then they had had no problems according to spews, yet they remained on the blacklist. Since then I have changed ISP's and don't have these issues. Blacklisting ISP's should not be done unless the offending ISP was a haven for spammers and does not do anything about it.
I have been fighting problems with spews for months with the last 3 Class C IP blocks that we have recieved. It was the worst attempt that I have ever seen at a blacklist. Seems like they should have whitelisted everyone instead of blacklisting them. Going to be a lot of pissed off people tomorrow im sure.

That's exactally what I thought.
For the future, almost all PCI-X cards will work in a PCI system.
Am I the only one that read that as goatse?
Umm, almost every webhosting provider in the world...

I will agree with this when the spyware vendor gives an option to uninstall the application properly. Thus giving the user a valid way to uninstall.
umm, all Windows versions still use LM Hash for any password less than 14 chars.

And it's only been like that for a while now, and Im allready annoyed as hell....
Does anyone here still use Red Hat?
Im guessing /. is helped quite abit by being constructed by mainly text.
to see if clearspeed can develop a CPU that can survive /.
