I already have an HTPC hooked to my TV... that said... it's the "standard" controller that makes it compelling... software targeting the ouya only has to worry about a single controller config... that means a lot... especially if you've tried setting up a front end loader for game emulators etc in the living room.. it's not a fun experience.

As an emulator platform, it's the best option I've ever had bar none. I've got an HTPC and every time I've thought about getting an emulator front end setup, just seemed like too much work... with the Ouya it's a single hardware platform, so don't have to worry nearly so much about controller setups.

I bought the Ouya specifically because my anticipation was that it would be a better legacy platform emulator for old ROMs (SNES, NES, Sega, etc) than what has happened with the likes of the Wii, XBox and PlayStation consoles... and I was right. It isn't perfect, but definitely a pretty smooth operation. I'm not a huge fan of the controllers (I just got mine in about a week ago, and got it hooked up on Saturday evening, though it's been pretty fun so far.

It's a lot harder to play some of those old games than I remember it being as a kid. I do wish the "Discover" area had a better interface, with better classifications around. I also wish that you could see a "video presentation" stream of a given game without having to install it first, some of them are pretty big when you only have 8GB of space available.

Also, I would expect to see a "Media" category with the likes of Netflix, Revision 3, and other video services soon enough. I think that this box has a lot to offer, and even centering on games, the entertainment and more social (online co-op gaming) aspects have barely been touched.

MS's extensions were to make it easier to access system code without having to go through the typical hurdles you do in Java (JNI is a little bitch). That said it was a violation of the Java specification. When MS created C#, as a language there were specific ties to support "unsafe" execution (direct access to pointers, and lower-level system structures), as well as C-style library interfaces via easy [DllImport] declarations and via direct PInvoke statements. IMHO this is the single biggest advantage that C# has over Java, even cross-platform with Mono. It's very easy to utilize different libraries in a cross-platform way in C#, far more easily than it is in Java.

That's not the only advantage that C# has over Java. I would say that it's better curated as a language, that's mainly a result of a benevolent dictator (Anders) than a knock against Java (extended by committee). Personally, I find working on Java based projects *far* more frustrating than .Net... though in both cases, I tend to see far too much "Enterprise" practices for the sake of.

Agreed that AMD should be killing with integrated graphics, and I think after the next gen consoles come out, they'll see a big bump in mobile.

Not sure which libraries you're referring to, but pgsql has a lot to offer.. A lot of libraries for more data types than mysql supports. As for sequences, you may want to consider a UUID/GUID field for your primary keys in non-log tables.. yes, the indexing is slightly slower, but more portable to other systems and support for replication, and distributed data is a *lot* better. You also get the benefit of being able to generate the ID in your code, instead of relying on a return value for the data record. You also get pretty decent support for XML and JSON (newly supported) encoded data types, which afaik no other database does as well with.

If I honestly had a choice (usually forced into Oracle or MS-SQL at work), I would much rather have PostgreSQL over others. Every time I've had to use/touch MySQL, it has been extremely frustrating, and far more so than any other DB I've worked with (Firebird, Oracle, MS-SQL, DB2, SQLite, etc), with the exception of SQLite they've all been far more capable as well. Sometimes it's good to start fresh.. also, if you have good unit tests for your utilities then "testing" should be easy.. if you don't, then are they really well tested?
