  1. Re:Cross platform applications. on iTunes for Windows Reviews · · Score: 1

I wouldn't say so slow. Just re-sizing is not as fast as native re-sizing. Considering this is version 1, expect it to get faster with each revision. This has ben the experience with most Apple Apps, they get faster as time goes by. This may be a nice difference for Windows users who are used to seeing the opposite from Microsoft. I am speaking from personal experience. My Mac get's faster with every new release from Apple. My PC gets slower with every new release from Microsoft. Has anyone else experienced this?

  7. Re:99 cents is too high on Apple Releases iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

A copy of coffee in New York costs me 1.10 now at the local store and I piss it out within the hour. 99 cents is cheap since I don't have to buy a whole album where only two or three songs are good. I used to have a personal rule that I wouldn't buy a CD unless I liked three songs on it, besides Linkin Park, Frida, AND Norah Jones, I have not purchased any other CD's lately. With iTunes Music Store however, I have been buying tracks left and right. Listening to genre's I never would have experimented with otherwise. So how much does a track cost you, when you buy a whole CD for only the couple of tracks you really want? 99 Cents couldn't be cheaper! And, I bet you in one one years time, the cost will be 1.09 and I'd still be happy to pay it for the luxury of choosing what I want.

  8. Re:My Review on Apple Releases iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

I never even thought about were the tracks are stored on my Mac, there has never been a reason to work outside of iTunes to manage my tracks. On my wifes Compaq using WMP9 and a Creative Muvo 128 MP3, we are always having to jump between explorer and WMP to copy tracks to the MP3 and even to find tracks is a pain as over time the ended up in different places. I downloaded iTunes for Windows for her and the first cool thing was now she can see my entire music library and play it and I can see hers. It works great and is a lot more elegant than WMP9 IMO for what we do. I like the fact that I can encode in MP3 and burn MP3 as well. Too burning is so easy as is ripping. Apple did it right for the common user. most users who have found some faults with it, seem to be the kind that like to fiddle with the underpinnings. Being in the computer industry since the PC industry started, I like things to just work, I hate wasting my time on poor implementations. Congrats Apple!

  11. Disgusting on PC World: Apple G5 Gets Trounced By Athlon 64 · · Score: 1

If I was a PC zealot I would still be disgusted at PC World. There tests do nothing but illustrate the bias in the industry. Once a test is published like this, it destroys the credibility of the PC base. Comparing a dead-end aging App like Premiere on the Mac which was ported from an old obsolete Premiere on Windows. It gives the impression that the author was hard pressed to find a slower App on the G5.

How hard would it have been to compare the much more popular Final Cut Pro against the latest version of Premiere on a task by task basis? Not hard at all. What a shame!

  12. Apple actually wins on PC World: Apple G5 Gets Trounced By Athlon 64 · · Score: 1

The funny thing about the PC World review is Apple actually beat out Athlon and Opteron on the only test that counts, Photoshop. Everyone knows that Premiere on the Mac is a dead App not being updated in over 2 years and poorly written at that. PC World having to use Premiere as a benchmark is laughable and desperate. They should have used Final Cut Pro (even Express) against the latest version of Premiere performing similar tasks. That would have been a fair test of real word Apps. I don't know who would have won this test had it been done right, but at least it would not have left a stink. Shame on you PC World for giving into childish tactics!

Some problem here with my Windows PCs, both the Dell laptop and Sony Vaio start thrashing though they have plenty of RAM. Doing any encoding brings the whole system to a crawl. It is really amazing that my old 500 MHz PowerMac G4 AGP, is consistently more responsive and I can have so many more Apps running simultaneously without any thrashing at all. When I read all the Wintel benchmarks and compare that against my actual experience, me thinks the benchmarks need a reality test. By the way 10.2.8 sped up my system, not as fast as the Panther betas but it is snappier.

  20. Re:9 Fans on G5 PowerBook "Challenge" · · Score: 1

We need to put up a running banner on why the G5 has 9 fans and large heat sinks. So many lazy people who comment on stuff they don't put any energy to learn about.

The G5 does not have a fan directly on it, it is off to the side and thus it requires a heat sink that is deeper with air pathways between the layers so the air can flow freely through the heat sink and cool it. Thus the unusually tall heat sink.

The G5 processor is controlled to such a degree that in most cases the processor is slewed down to 1.3GHz and at that speed actually doesn't even require the fan to be running. (Apple keeps it running at a trickle speed in order to bring it alive faster in case the processors load was to suddenly increase.) The speed of the processor is automatically adjusted between 1.3 GHz to 2GHz. It steps automatically and quickly in either direction. (There is a preference in OS X to adjust this feature.)

In a notebook configuration with the G5 running between 1.3 and 2GHz, a fan directly on the processor will provide much better cooling. I you can cool a Pentium 4-M which generates significantly more heat in a notebook you can definitely cool a G5. Apple has other considerations though. The U3 controller needs to be adjusted as does the FSB. I don't blieve Apple will go with a 2:1 core to FSB ratio in a notebook, though it is possible.
