Point #2 is invalid unless you can supply proof by pointing to the actual genome(s). An argument cannot be made on the basis that all other complex organisms behave in a similar fashion. Take, for example, the North American Buffalo. Upon giving birth to a new calf, if the calf cannot (or refuses) to walk after a day, the mother leaves it to die. Assuming your argument was based on facts from other specie behavior, we would want to think that the maternal parent of this calf would stay with its calf to protect and guard it from danger until it finally wasted away on its own.
Second comment: A lot of tests can be done on the fetus before its born, if one of these test was found to provide conclusive evidence of the fetus being handicapped, is abortion ok?
Well, they'll have to be careful about using sledgehammers (the tool) in their commercials when its released. Apple might want to sue because they are infringing on 'their' creative pioneering. (Apple's '1984' commercial with the person running in and chucking the sledge into the screen.) How twisted would that be? The new Sledgehammer has that same ad except it says "AMD" instead of "Apple" and they debue the new processor in a box that is painted so it looks like one of the old Mac Classics...
I will agree with one of the other poster's about Peter Gabriel's song potentially being in one of the ads...even though I really don't care for the song.
I've been expecting this for awhile since once you can add the 2nd wavelength optical data storage, its really a matter of time until you start superimposing more wavelengths. Sure, its cool to see this 150GB+ data medium but just how marketable is it? I'll admit I am drooling at the prospect of putting the entire collection of Dr. Who episodes on one, two, or even 7 (one for each Doctor?) digital disks that I can just pop in at any time. Cool, yes. But the powers that be won't see it that way. Why sell the 2 U(ber)VD collection for $30 when you can pop each episode off on tape/DVD for $24.95? I already see it happening, being the anime fan that I am. The first thought was that I could buy a DVD or 2-DVD set that contained all the Ranma 1/2 episodes for each season. Instead, the anime DVDs I do find (there are a few exceptions: Lodoss War, Babel 2, Iria) contain no more than what is on the tape...most of the time these tapes only have 30 minutes worth of stuff anyway. So, yeah, I was pretty appalled when I saw a DVD of Pokemon(I don't buy them..honest! Just checking how many episodes were on the DVD.) with a running time of 30 minutes! When they can hold 4 hours of stuff???
I can see this with tapes, the quality degrades when going from sp to slp so instead of stretching out a whole 6-8 hours worth of stuff, only put on 2 hours of stuff. But DVDs are digital...its such a waste. I think I'd really freak out if I saw a media type with 10+ hour capability with a 30 minute show on it...
To badly paraphrase Ferris Bueller: "If you stuck a lump of coal in Uranus, in two weeks, you'd have a diamond."
(Ok, so its redundant...)
But really, the only reason diamonds are such a valuable commodity on Terra is simply for the reason that they are not common or easily brought into circulation. Now, if for some odd reason, it rained diamonds here, their value as a monetary staple would be nonexistant. Of course, we could easily develop technologies based on diamonds because of the drive that an inexpensive resource has on the market. I feel that's one of the reasons for the silicon(sand) market. Sure, you can make Real Cool Things(tm) out of rare earth metals but it won't become a technology that's widely accepted. But if it did rain diamonds, the question would be, what would engagement rings be made of?
The thing with Quantum mechanics is that you just cannot 'listen' without changing the the object you are listening to. Heisenberg explained this best, imo. I did some researh work on this a few years back...I'd dig it up but I thought the article explained this. *shrug*
Don't forget "John Deere" green as well... *snicker*
What would be cool is if they(or someone) came out with the "Slashdot" commemorative laptop. One that had the slashdot green cover, emblazoned with the "/." on it. Only make 5-10k of these and have them all hand signed by CmdrTaco and Hemos! Ooo, collectible laptops...the next "beanie baby."
I bet even Nitrozac would buy one of these.
Is it Fawn with the "/. Me" T-shirt? She'd probably even be toting around on one of these. Of course, they'd only be REALLY valuable if they came with the Nitrozac@home screensaver. >;)
As much as I like the new undertaking (I will be installing Perl6 on my system @home when it gets released). This will mean bad news for the geeks at our large company. Right now we have a split system between development and production, where everything in production has to go through what I can only assume to be rigorous testing before it is implemented. We run Perl5 in development but have been working very diligently to get it approved for prod, which currently uses v4. Change can be slow with the overhead that comes with big business so I see a much larger gap between dev and prod here. (That's our problem, I guess.;)
But yes, this is great news and I can only hope they can make a great thing(tm) better with more functionality.
A friend of mine had surgery done to help alleviate the problems causte by CTS. They had two separate operations, one for each wrist. I believe that his wrist was in a brace for about 2 months before he went in for a check-up and to verify the surgery was a success. He then had the surgery performed upon the other wrist. I am not my friend so I cannot truly say how much of a recovery to normalcy he gained through the operation but he was very happy with it and apparently so was his wife after the brace was removed. >;)
I know that on-line courses aren't the total solution to the education process but I've taken quite a few correspondence courses in my high school days just plainly because there are some things high school doesn't teach. Linear Differential Equations isn't necessarily one of them.:) I for one am a person that enjoys setting the pace of my learning and it is also a lot easier for me to focus on the education without distractions, be it the female in front of you or other things. I also know that some college professors could simply put their notes and itinerary for the class on-line and you could get more out of the class than attending, watching the prof copy his/her notes verbatim to the chalkboard.
But there are some courses where human interaction is an important part of the class. Theatre is the first of my classes that somes to mind.
On-line education isn't a solution but when applied correctly, its a damn good idea opportunity.
Why would Corel try and pull something like this? One would assume that this tactic will alienate them from their consumer base and that they are well aware of it...especially after CmdrTaco gets a hold of the info.
Perhaps they are afraid that some of their 'competitors' such as Red Hat or Mandrake will borrow the code they released and make it their own. (Which won't happen because GPL means no one has the IP rights to it to begin with...I think)
I cannot even use the old addage "Even bad publicity is good publicity" to rationalize this. Except in maybe someway they want to give people the sense that their code is "Forbidden fruit"...thus causing a lot of people to pirate the code even though they really aren't because its under GPL.
*shrug* Its been a long day.
Why is Chewbacca on Endor? Wookies don't live on Endor! It makes no sense!
Well considering this is the "first post" (I thought I would never have to use that line on/.)
I could see my comment being moderated as perhaps obvious but not redundant. Yes, the two ways to increase/maintain profits are (pardon the lesson)
A) Increase revenues (sales) B) Cut expenses
Now, this new CEO is probably wanting to make a favorable initial impression on shareholders. I could be mistaken on this but usually the CEO's definition of job security is keeping the shareholders happy, financially and sometimes otherwise. (ie: old Steve Jobs, I think)
To get that favorable first impression, the CEO thinks, "I need to have a profitable quarter under my belt right off the bat." Perhaps SGI tried all they could to increase revenue of sales. Even I've seen the hype around the 1400L series. Unfortunately, the company's sales didn't make the level hoped for so...switch to option "B".
Not pretty but the rule generally means that the lowest positions(it would be nice if they were the least important to the critical path but this isn't always true) in the business model are liquidated to cut the company's burn rate, or expenditure. To clarify, "lowest positions" = techs, R&D, interns, etc. in a technical business. I have yet to see a company that classified management in the "lowest position" category...after all, who is handing out pink slips, someone has to do it.
-Vel
Ack! I'm a physicist...last thing I thought I'd be lecturing on is the basic business model. Look what you've done to me. I may as well wear a suit & tie, stop coding PERL and stop drinking Dew. >;)
One of these experiments did occur in the US with vast tanks of D20 (heavy water). There was a special on 'NOVA' for those of you that like to watch PBS. I don't recall the specifics but there was an agent in the D20 that when hit by a neutrino created a Chlorine molecule I believe (Cl2) and they tried to measure the amount of gas released/formed. I think I watched this sometime between '90 and '92. So yeah, its been awhile.
Knowing that the TTB all have multiple degrees in physics, mathematics, etc. Is this a point of self-reflection in these characters? Many inquirers seem to be preoccupied with whether or not the tight fitting T-shirts are self-reflective images (ok, I am a little too but I refuse to ask;) but I am curious to the extents to which you've taken higher education in these areas? I suppose you could drop the name of the institution but I tend to be pretty quiet about name dropping myself...
Oh yeah, there seem to be a lot of references to the aliens on your site so this fits: Do you do Seti@Home? Or do you think Terra is the only planet in the universe with sentient life?
I work "after dark" and when I get home to rest during the day, perhaps I should have the privilege of watching the programming I paid for, regardless of whether its "This Old House" or "Saving Private Ryan." Personally, I prefer Batman: The Animated Series but that's me.
I find it strange that this is happening. Mainly because I was shocked when I watched 'Muppet Treasure Island'...comparing it to the other muppet movies I have watched, this one seems to have quite a bit of sexual innuendo (much more than a frog and pig getting married), for example, the context with which Miss Piggy greeted "Loooong John". Maybe I just didn't catch all of that in the older movies because I was younger at the time.
I really don't want media to go nuts on this and start calling me a "Cyber Commie." Its bad enough that they refuse to discern between hackers -n- crackers.
Speaking of which, I wish I could remember who asked me what the difference between a hacker and a saltine was.;)
This news gives a little more meaning to Apples G4 commercial about a group of tanks defending the G4 box. Does this mean Apple will annouce a new color, "Army Green?"
There is plenty from the merchandising profits to cover Fox's monetary needs as well as to make up for Lucas' production costs since he paid for it out of the pocket. "Largest money making independent film"
Call me an idiot if you want, but there is no need to be rude.
And yes, I am aware that Fox needs to get paid for distribution, as well as theatre owners, popcorn sellers and even the theatre janitors.

Basic D&D has dragons immune to their breath weapon types. It also says the Red has fire, green has (Chlorine?) gas and Gold has fire & gas.
I don't know about 1st ed. But I'm sure the basic agrees with the "Gold dragon kick" rout theory.
-Vel
So, will they be incorporating the crit hit tables as well? And the 10d6 max fireball damage that any decent 8-9th level Fighter can shrug off?
I will admit, this is an interesting tidbit considering that Hasbro(?) purchased WotC who, in turn, owns D&D.
Weird.
