Exactly my point. Who pays the premiums?

If you are open 6 days a week and get robbed once a year, that's a loss of 1/300 (0.3%) versus 3/100 (3%) for the credit company.

The appeal of credit cards for the store is in reducing cash management, tracking customer habits, and having customers with a bottomless wallet for spontaneous buys. - Banks and security firms can offer deals on cash flow, customer-cards take care of tracking, it's only the spontaneous splurge where credit cards excel. And big retail stores are more interested in that than grocery stores.

Which brings me back to my original plan: Why not just use the Netherlands?

    (1) Large parts of the Netherlands are below sea level, so there would be no risk of flooding neighboring areas.
    (2) There are already pumps and dike-systems everywhere, so the conversion costs would be minimal.
    (3) Houseboats, Barges, swimming apartments are really cool.
    (4) For starters one could do peak use in the summer months only. And the Dutch wouldn't really mind, because they're in Italy at that time.

  15. Re:True on IQ 'a Myth,' Study Says · · Score: 1

"IQ is a myth" is just as claiming "Height is a myth" just because there is not measurable correlation between a persons height and their overall performance in basketball.

Height is a number measuring extension in one-dimension. Using a number to do that is quite appropriate. If people correlate that to success, basketball, health - that's their problem.

But IQ is a number that claims to accurately represent a multi-dimensional set of properties. That's like a pilot giving his position with "145", or a shooter game that doesn't give you health, ammunition, strength, but only "120 total", or a car that replaces fuel gauge, speedometer and coolant temperature with a single display.

  16. FB failed to adjust their droids on Facebook Ordered To End Its Real Name Policy In Germany · · Score: 2

"We believe the orders are without merit, a waste of German taxpayers' money and we will fight it vigorously"

Sounds like someone that has a complete lack of respect for the law in general. "We don't agree with the law, we don't want you trying to enforce the law on us, and we're going to fight it even though it's law."

Yes, it is disregard for the law. And it is an attempt to manipulate the public opinion in their favor.

But the really funny thing is how unadjusted to the German market their spokesdroids are.

The argument "waste of taxpayers' money" is corporate propaganda used in the US. If government funds a law that provides oversight, it is "waste of taxpayers' money", if however things get funded by "private donations" politicians ought to be praised. (The latter is called corruption in other countries.)

In Germany people expect government to fund and enforce laws. The attitude is more like: I paid for it, I expect good service. So FB basically shot itself in the foot by claiming that government did its job.
    - They should have used the "anonymity helps online predators" argument, since that one works in Germany too.
