Earth is a spinning ball. Tie a string to any point on it and is going to end up perpendicular to the axis of rotation but while that would be straight up at the equator at the north pole it's going to basically be straight to the horizon.
It's not a question of could there be a god but rather is there any reason to act like there is.
Let's say we have somone named bob that's all knowing all powerfull and realy likes good mexican food. Now he could have created the world / space and time just to get good mexican food infact he could make infinatly many worlds just so he can get good mexican food but knowing this would it tell you anything about how to live your life?
Knowing that something could creat our world just to eat one meal and then leaves it along for all time realy does not change you an anyway shape or form thus if you can't know god as you point out why try? You don't try and dig a hole to china knowing how far it is do you?
Anyway, I can visualise things with more than 5+ dimensions just fine and I can look at the world and never say "there needs to be a god." so why should I treat anyone who things otherwise as anything other than a fool?
With unlimited time every situation that could show up will so for example every person on the world would be living in china except for you. Every person in the world is going to die unless you go there ect ect. It's not a question of temptation is infinate temtation. Hell you get lost wandering around tibet and you end up in China.
Well if you have a network you can save your files to another system and use CVS from that system. Do all your coding in OS2200 and then run a script that copys everything. You should look at CVS as a backup of all your code. I mean you do back up your code to something off that system right?
I was less expencive than anyone else they could find. Fresh out of collage willing to work for 38k who knew Object Pascal and how to write networking code. They tried to find an H1b to fill the position and failed.
I was cheaper than than anyone else they could find so I got my job. Just as most H1B's are cheaper than any one from the US college kids are cheeper than people with 20+ years of exp.
Spelling had nothing to do with it. And yea I could fix this post up but every time a nitwit like you reads my post and says WTF can't he spell some dark part of my soul I sheads a tear of joy.
No really I have studied it for a while and it works fine. Single celled to multi celled takes 1 billion years... Think about that 1 BILLION YEARS for life forms that be born have kids and have there kids have kids in less than an hour X millions of life forms in a cubic foot a water X 5280 X 5280 per cubic mile of water times who knows how many cubic miles of ocean.
Evolution is nothing more than life keeping as many mutations going at the same time and then combining them as needed when your environment changes. Poisonous creatures don't just make one poison they make hundreds so there prey will not evolve protection vs. 10 or 20 of them and get away they would have to come up hundreds of mutations at the same time to get away. That's also why snakes use super doses of venom why pump a mice full of enough venom to kill a human well that keeps mice form evolving a little protection to get them though the times when they got a small but survivable dose and building up ect ect. Now you say why would the snake make so many poisons well he only needed one to start with and then when protection evolved to that he made a 2nd ect until he is making so many that the pray start to select agents the forms of protection that are not needed and it ends up with a balance where snakes can make so many more toxins than are need and it's stable that way (For a while now having those extra toxins are nor really needed... But as long as there in the DNA somewhere there "free" to come out as needed.)
People say that there are these "huge" leaps that occur in evolution with no explanation but they seem to ignore the fact that whales have toes. Now if you ask yourself why whales have toes you can realize that evolution works by recombining existing pieces of it's self so things keep junk around because over time it's better to be able to adapt to change than become super optimized and stuck.
Some ID people say look at this there is nothing like it that's useful for what it does and then you find 1 or 2 things that are like it but used for something else and you can see how most of these great leaps are really just minor changes that are from the ~3+ mutations in every life form that has ever lifted for billions of years. Even then some say you can't win the lottery 5 times in a row I say with enough games you would expect streaks of 100,000 games in a row.
Evolution does can start with people a single amino Acid that can replicate, and mutate. That's all it takes to get the ball going. You don't need cell walls, you don't need DNA you don't need mitochondria for the fist life form you just need replication, there's nothing out there to eat you and nothing is competing with you for space until you cover the earth and your descendents start to duke it out.
PS: As to knowing what your talking about have your ever written a program that uses evolution to find solutions to problems well some people have so humanity does even if you have only heard about doing this.
Umm, re read that one there where 2 trees one of immortality the other of knowledge.
Not saying I believe or anything but if you want to *believe* in a book read the thing. Including such parts as God sending bears to kill little kids for picking on his priest.
They could have built a 40gig IPOD with a good LCD so you can watch movies ~4gb/movie = 10 or ~1.5gb / movie = 25 and let you store music and play mid to low end games that you download from the net.
Instead there trying to subsidies the price of the player's with the movie and games people buy. But now they can't release a UMD writer or there losing the DVD market so people who buy these things are going to be stuck with a limited UMD selection that they have to pay for again. Anyway, for the price of 4 * 40$ or 8 * 20$ UMD movies I can just buy a portable DVD player 160$.
So what's the point of buying UMD's?
PS: What I am waiting for is the next gen cell phone with 10+gb's of storage. You could take thousands of 2+megapixel pictures / a few hours of movies, play games, listen to hours of music, watch DVD's AND it's a cell phone. That's the next killer app and I can wait the ~2-4 years it's going to take before I can get one.
Fuel is not a large part of the shuttles budget. The amount of man-hours it takes to inspect a shuttle after a flight and fix any broken pieces is way higher than the cost of fuel.
If you want it to be cheaper make it as simple and reliable as possible after the thing lands someone should walk up kicks the tires and says looks good to me fill it up and let's get back to space.
The military funds research into areas like this which have little to no known practical value if there is a chance that at somepoint it might be usefull.
As of right now I am young (24) and I am really early in this process (3-4) months along. I have an ok job with no contract / so my IP rights are secure (yes I made an issue of this.) and in my free time I am creating software to do something. Now my plain is to invest ~5k to start and ~300$/month to get a working system up and running and then try and get a small user base going. I think word of mouth will work fine as I have a good seed group of people from a wide geographic area to get the word out. Of course this means I have to support my self while I am doing this thus the whole slave comment.
My goal is to be worth ~500k before looking for significant investors of any kind but it's hard to say when / if that's going to happen. I mean I think I can get this setup by September but I don't know if having a working prototype will qualify me for this type of value or if I need to have a customer base to hit that mark.
I don't really see how this can fail I mean if I am dumping all my free time into it as long as I keep my job it's just a question of staying with it or walking away. But it's the whole looking for investors thing that's messing with me. I mean I know I can get 20+k from friends and family but unless I quit my job it's not like I can spend much time looking for investors.
O well I guess it's more the fear that I am climbing some the first hill of a roller coaster with all this effort and I know it's going to be a ride before things settle down again.
Anyway, I think it's going to be fun and I hope you have some Good Luck!
I don't think it's an isue of building small fighter's will cost to much I think larger ships will get to pull just as many g's as small ships so it's pointless. Let's say your building space station X and it's a target if it can't move at all I can just take a 10kg rock get it up to say 1/10c and pop goes space station. The only way to stop this is to not be where they thought you would be when they lauch the thing.
At to the lack of a top speed well on earth it's easy to pull 10 or 20 g's if you bank hard but you can't keep speeding up at 10 g's for vary long thus you end up dog fighting. But to pull 10g's in space I need a huge rocket that let's me pull 10g's now at that point I can just use that rocket to go 10g's for as long as I have fule so if I can now go at such speeds that nobody can catch me.
Think of it this way, if I can go 10g faster than you I get to be 1km from you in 5seconds, 4.9km from you in 10, 11km from you in 15 and 176.4km from you in 60 seconds but now in the air I can do that by banking hard and or diving but in space it's all about the size of the rocket so I could do that going in a straight line. Also in space there is no need to put the guns on the front of the ship so I can have rockets pointing in all directions and it works just as well. So why not just do a flyby at say mach 3,000 fire everything I got before I get to you and keep on going you don't get to catch me if I am going mach 30,000 and you start pulling 10g's I get to pull 10g's and I sill pull away from you at mach 3,000.
Last I checked fusion will let you pull 1g+ for days so you could easly do this type of fighting inside a solar system using tech that's well within our reach.
People higher H1B's because there cheeper. I work with several of them and even though I don't have a masters and have 1-3 years less experence I still make more than every H1b visa person at this company.
The problem is most H1b visa people around here don't understand the process of making good software. Now shure they work hard, know how to code and most are well educated, but they are not willing to stand up and say "that's a bad idea" which is why a lot of there projects don't work out well.
It's funny I have talked with most of them about this and they say "It's not my job to show fault" even when they know there correct. This has cost the company 20% or so increase in the time it takes to get anything done because they produce lot's of code that fit's spec but the spec has noting to do with the requierments.
Ok well some of them are incomptent but so are many US people so I think job skills are more or less a wash. The largest problem is many of them are puting in 80 hour weeks trying to overcome imposible deadlines when there asked can you do it by X they always seem to say yes knowing it's not going to happen... I don't know I think it's some sort of cultural isue. A friend of mine Vasant was the one of the if not the best coder we had and he did stand up and say this is not aceptable a few time but he ended up leaving for better employment. He was fired after he already had a few better job offers and ended up saying I am taking two weeks vacation starting friday which did not go over well. I think he said if he he was fired he had 60 days to find new employment or he had to leave but he still changed jobs with little problem.
Anyway, there are a lot of hidden cost's to H1b's such as them sending money home which acts as part of a trade deficit. They don't seem to fit as well with corperate culture. But they are cheep labor which may or may not ofset all these isues I don't know. I think changing the rules so they have to pay 5% more than the average on sertificate and lifting the cap would help a lot. You can higher anyone anywhere in the world but you don't save money by doing so but you get to higher the best from around the world.
I wonder if they are going to start using JIT systems to avoid this aka they have more plains than they realy need and use the largest plains only when they would fill up a smaller one.
I mean having extra jets for holiday travel seems nesisary so for day to day travel they should be able to send just the jets of the best size to keep them nearly filled based on last weeks fight expectations.
If you write a complex line that does not work then it's hard to see what it's doing but if you have the same line broken down you can look at all the intermeadeat values and see what's going on. If you realy want your program to look like one line of code to scare people you can always build it up when your done but why write code like that when your trying to debug what's going on.
I think lines of code should do one thing at a time so you can do math like A = B + C + D * E;
That way you can look at the "clean" code that the system is using and automaticly roll back all changes made to some or all files on a given date. You can even use diff to see what changed over longer periods of time in a given function. And it's automatic so you don't need to wonder if you realy rolled back the code to 12/15/04 you know it's what's in production.
And you get a simple place to comment the scope of what you where fixing / working on over several files. And can clearly see what files where changed for this fix.
Wouldn't enlarge the surface area raise the possibility of meteor damage?
Yes, but there are many ways of dealing with this. If you're doing Deep space stuff then there is little Need to worry about hitting stuff, as there is not much to hit.
My idea would be to use a system that looked like leaf where you have a large heat conducting core that branches out a few times and then has a thin film between each of those braches so if something hit's a large brach the brach would survive and if it breaks a small part of the mesh then it's ok because you can make it 10% larger to start with and know that large chunks of it are not going to be damaged. (Looking at the base you would see an X as 2 2d leaves intersect at the central shaft. Now the large shafts should be able to withstand impacts from objects that where small and you just navigate around larger objects.
Amway, they need to radiate 100 KW (or 100 KW / 24% efficient > 400KW I don't really know what there numbers are.) From a 60 meters long 30,000 kg mass ship so it's really a question of how efferent it's going to be at radiating heat as to how much and of what design there cooling system needs to be.
PS: I always thought that the whole Kirk/Khan 3d thing was a little odd but even though some people really don't think well in 3d I think it was more a plot device than anything else. I suspect real space combat would be like submarine combat where you can hide by not moving (In space you could be moving but you can't change your speed or direction.) or scream out where your position is by moving but with the distances involved and the lack of a "top" speed there is not going to be much dog fighting.
I am doing so in my free time, but I am becoming a "slave" to the company I am starting. Now I hope that in 3-5 years I can work ~40 hour week for my self and have some level of security but until then it seems like I created this huge black hole that's sucking all my free time.
Then again, I guess it depends on what type of startup your doing I am setting up a software company that has a product instead of the consulting rout that most people seem to take. I think the long term rewords are going to be higher but it's much more risk and as I don't get paid till it's done and people are using it I need to work two jobs for the next few years.
Anyway, what has your experience with starting up been?
Your only a slave as long as you let them make you a slave. Try living less than 5 miles from work at which point an 8 hour work day is just haulf of your day. With 2 weeks of vacation + 2 weeks of sick leave + holidays and weekends off I don't spend all that much time at work.
Don't get into debt and don't buy things you don't need and you can realy get ahead. Then again I skip cable don't buy much junk and drive an older car but hey adding 500$ / month into savings vs not geting into dept is worth it to me.
30 miles still vary close when your talking about objects in space
I think the main advantage is there would be almost no fall out and you would be protected by the hull of your space ship / hull.
Anyway, 3d space so...
Looking at www.hiroshima-is.ac.jp/Hiroshima/radiation.htm 10 rads = No Apparent symptoms 100 rads = Changes appear in lymphocytes produced by bone marrow
2,500m from hiroshima would you got 12 rads now at 700 you are going to die but 12 is more a small long term risk. But at 30 miles you get (1 / (48 / 2.5)) ^2 of that dose which would be 1 / 368.64 of that or 0.03 rads which is fairly safe.
And yes I am skiping alpah and beta rays but: A single piece of paper can stop an alpha ray effectively Depending on its energy (i.e., speed), a beta ray can traverse different distances in water--less than 1 mm for tritium to nearly 1 cm for phosphorus-32.
Their might be some fallout stuck to your space ship with out gravity to pull it down and consitrate it on you your geting a lot less fallout than you would normaly. Your also not going to injest any radio active fallout which will help a lot. Now clearly there are larger bombs something 1000x that would fall into the 32 rads range which would increase your risk of canser over the long term but with a little shielding from the space ship your probably going to be fine.
PS: Once again this is in space at 30miles on the ground you get stuck eating / breathing fallout at that range which greatly increases your risks.
IANAP but it seems like building an Insulated shade would work Better than just having a Mirror. 4 layers of foil sepearted by 1cm of vacume would cause the outer layer to heat up a lot more and thus radiate more energy.
Your also working in 3d space so if your radeator is a long tail then you get a lot of surface area to that space than you have with the sun.
AKA I would build something like this.
Insulator
V V : | | | | Reactor | - Radiator A Mirror
I don't think there going to ship all the data to all 200 locations when they can just use 1-10 data center's and have all the Scientists remotly log into them and have the results sent back over a fast data link. It's not like humans can look at 1500MBps of data by hand.
The whole idea of GRID computing is you can have your data and computations take place anywhere and just pay for data storage and computing power. What do you think 200, 600mbps links is going to cost you?
A large land tax atifisaly constricts land use it would cause people to build multi story buildings where it is more efficent to use more land to do the same thing. AKA you start building multi story parking garages where there is no need to do so.
Looking into USPS and say that again. There is nothing magic about private enterprise that saves money there are many head to head studys that demonstarte an increased cost when private enterprise takes over public funtions. Look at the quality of school lunches in the US the districts that privatise that function either spend more money to keep a given food quality or reduce food qulity to save money.
To compeat on the global marketplace the US needs to remain a center for R&D and asking for private sponserhip for basic research is kidding yourself. Look into the courent efforts to build a working fusion reactor and how much the US abandinment of basic research has cost the world. ITER's basic design has been around for YEARS and nobody want's to spend the 20 or so billion it's going to take to get this thing off the ground. People don't give money to basic research because it's not sexey. Clearly 20 billion to "feed" people is money better spend than learning how to generate nearly limitless energy efficently, and cleanly.

I think your missing the point. I like my job now but if I could make 3k more a year I would leave in a hartbeat.
How much I like my job = how well I do.
How much I am paid = how long I stay.
I don't know php but try breaking your code down into smaller chunks so it looks more like:
/application\/xhtml\+xml;
\ d{1,3}|1\.0|[01])/i', $_SERVER['if(preg_match('/application\/xhtml\+xml; \s*q=(0\.\ d{1,3}|1\.0|[01])/i', $_SERVER['if(preg_match('/application\/xhtml\+xml; \s*q=(0\.\ d{1,3}|1\.0|[01])/i', $_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT'],'],'],$matches))
remote_location =
if(preg_match($remote _location, $matches))
Than:
if(preg_match('/application\/xhtml\+xml;\s*q=(0\.
If you write a complex line that does not work then it's hard to see what it's doing but if you have the same line broken down you can look at all the intermeadeat values and see what's going on. If you realy want your program to look like one line of code to scare people you can always build it up when your done but why write code like that when your trying to debug what's going on.
I think lines of code should do one thing at a time so you can do math like A = B + C + D * E;
Or compare something
If ( A == N )
but doing both at the same time is pointless
If ( (B + C + D * E) == N )
USE CVS!
Your a slave to your SUV not your boss.
30 miles still vary close when your talking about objects in space
0 rads = No Apparent symptoms
I think the main advantage is there would be almost no fall out and you would be protected by the hull of your space ship / hull.
Anyway, 3d space so...
Looking at www.hiroshima-is.ac.jp/Hiroshima/radiation.htm
1
100 rads = Changes appear in lymphocytes produced by bone marrow
2,500m from hiroshima would you got 12 rads now at 700 you are going to die but 12 is more a small long term risk. But at 30 miles you get (1 / (48 / 2.5)) ^2 of that dose which would be 1 / 368.64 of that or 0.03 rads which is fairly safe.
And yes I am skiping alpah and beta rays but:
A single piece of paper can stop an alpha ray effectively
Depending on its energy (i.e., speed), a beta ray can traverse different distances in water--less than 1 mm for tritium to nearly 1 cm for phosphorus-32.
Insulator
V V
: | | | | Reactor | - Radiator
A
Mirror
It's more not less information you need but to help clear it up it's.
0.25 electronvolts per hydrogen atom produced.
Feel free to do all the math you want now.
