Launchbar is the best little program I've ever had the pleasure of getting used to, I fully intend to pay for it as soon as i get a credit card. Totally kick ass!
One thing that annoys me is people counting apps on X versus unix/windows. Windows has 10's of thousands of apps, but the vast majority are shit. How many MP3 players are there for windows? Millions. How many do you need?
When you actually get down to the apps that aren't shit, OS X has a comparable number, esp. compared to linux where there is no pro apps (like Cubase/Reason/Logic etc).
Having said that, When Linux does make a "pro" app like the Gimp, It doth rock severly.
But BlastX, sequencing, audio production, visual production,
etc are easy to get for X.
I have the same spec as you, and I can pull 5 plus hours out of the bag with panther.
Try doing battery exercises, fill it, drain it, and as it is ending reduce all power usage (turn all programs off and kill the lights.
Reset the PV ram and fill it up.
I'm very unlucky if i dont get at least 3.5 hours with panther.
traditional methods [fans] would have produced windspeeds of 60+ MPH....
I wonder how they are all orientated? I wonder if photos of the final result will be released.
I use OS X and win 2k, neither crash.
I installed 2k, I install all 2 million service packs and patches. I ghost an image, it crashes, it gets ghosted.
At almost the same time, i removed OS X Panther, and re-installed 10.2.7 (panther did crash, but you cant judge a beta).
I installed the several updates, (there were a good few, dont get me wrong), but i liked the fact that i only had to restart twice.
My end point is, If Mac users complain about Windows crashing so much, they either havent used windows 2K (i wont mention XP, its shit), OR ELSE they have no clue on how to handle PCs.
Having said that, id give a leg for a G5, and i firmly believe MAcs are superior. They let you work better, the OS doesnt get in your way.

I am a Scientist too (Guess what field!), and i use my graphics card to play Quake and Other such 3D games. How many FPS can you get on 1100 G5's?
