if you want a rewarding experience with programming for the first or second time.. i cant recommend something like PHP enough. <p> because you can do all the interface stuff in html it makes getting something worthy of showing mum really easy to make.
Great, now when can we expect GNU/Hurd drivers? im going to need something to do with my system as soon as i can fit a game on one of my 1gig partitions
p.s. YAY finally bsd drivers, this rules.. can someone post any info about getting these working under 5.0, and thus using great features like gcc 3.2?
while i dont want to bash linux even one little bit here, i think its great. Prehaps the author should consider an operating system with a larger focus on stability? FreeBSD and others have a much more stability consious approach, and freebsd really cleans up on netcrafts longest uptimes stats.
not only that but it includes linux binary compatability for those things which dont compile nativley (not much)
alternative to nvidia linux only drivers?

whoop whoop, pitty there isnt any decent nvidia 3d support on freebsd yet
it has been obvious for a long time, that when the writers on slashdot think opensource, they are actually just thinking linux. and this is why i have been reading slashdot less and less, and will certinaly not be wasting my time voting on these stupid categorys.
where is the support for the tiny, just starting out, os's? why do the writers for slasdot still keep disilusioning themselves that linux is best for EVERYTHING, when it clearly is not? (infact, nothing is)
where does it say open source in the article you say you got it from? Linux only drivers are useless to a BSD user like myself. and i think people forget how many of us there are.

Ok, firstly, congratulations on meeting a woman and getting along well with her. Secondly, that dosn't mean your "tried and true" methods of "girl getting" are universal handbook material. My Good friend has met a girl, who DOES love computers and DOES care what kind of NIC(Also 3com) and how much RAM (128 Meg) is in her computer. Not only that, but she is VERY HOT.
You know why? because not all people deeply involved with computers have social problems, OR even call themselves Geeks.
It may come as a bit of a shock, to the self obsessed linux crowd out there, (you know, the ones that think they are doing me a favor by using linux, and have it in their heads that being the biggest geek is cool), but just because i program and i love using FreeBSD, it dosnt mean i consider myself a nerd.. I still have many friends and go out and socialize every night i get.
Its been obvious (to me anyway) that redhat is just out to make linux into an operating system for the masses, while making a nice sum of money at the same time.
My opinion? if you want to be someone using a "different" os , use FreeBSD. I think we need a healty amount of different operating systems as main stream , so we never get another MS
errrmm actually windows dosnt ship with nvidia opengl drivers either. it amazing what people expect from linux distros sometimes.

Yes, i agree there are MUCH worthier distributed computing projects. folding@home and genome@home try to further medical science!

you left one more type of post off the list, the type that are summaries of all the typical posts.

Come on!
am i the only one who finds the consistant pro-linux ignorance really annoying?
no, i dont think that making everything run on linux is a good idea. infact i think its a stupid idea that would surely leave us wrose off.
