  1. Re:Windows 2000 on Why Don't Servers Support Power Management? · · Score: 1

Yes, have you ever tried using power management on Windows 2000? It's really not that great, I've played with it on many different systems, including laptops, here are some of my experiences.

Standby mode: System either doesn't come up or only partially comes up when pressing key on keyboard or moving mouse. Seems to be random.

Hibernate: System freezes while copying contents of memory to hard disk, reset button needs to be pushed, "please use the shut down command from the start menu" message comes up.

Hibernate: System copies memory to hard disk properly, and doesn't ever shut itself down, just sits at that screen.

Hibernate: System copies memory to hard disk properly, and shuts down, when powered back up, sits at the "waking up from hibernation" screen for about 5 minutes, and gives message "Windows was unable to wake from hibernation, would you like to start normally?"

This is definitely the kind of reliability I'd like for my servers. :>

I know this isn't really important, but some x86 motherboards (mostly Asus that I know of) do support active fan control, but that's not through the OS, for example Asus provides a utility to monitor that.

Not something I'd ever use on a server, though, and besides, that utility is only for windows :-)

  3. There is already some satellite radio... on Satellite Radio Coming Soon(?) · · Score: 1

There is already some satellite radio in existence... we have a C/Ku-Band satellite dish (yeah, one of those big 10-foot ones like the farmers have)... and on certain satellites on certain transponders, you can find radio stations. There are listings of them in magazines like Orbit. But, I do think it would be quite nifty to be able to receive that in my car... that way, I could go wherever I wanted to and not worry about my radio stations going bye-bye when I travel.

Frankly, I think it's about time for something like this to happen. Wouldn't it be great to have a palmtop PC that was as functional as a desktop? I mean, some the current palms are pretty cool, and have lots of features, but they can't do all the things your desktop can.

I think it would be great to run Linux (or my personal favorite, FreeBSD) on a computer in the palm of my hand. Or maybe even on my Nokia cell phone.

Plus, since it would be cheap, that would be great for actual desktop systems as well. Imagine a machine with the power of an Athlon 750, for the price of an e-Machine celeron 400.

I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks of this.

I agree with you, somewhat. Frankly, I don't really care about the standards (Glide vs. GL vs. D3D etc)... as long as all my games run, look good, and are fast.

What I'm interested in knowing is why people need so much dang speed! I don't know about you, but I'm perfectly happy with the 60frames/sec that my Voodoo^2 gives me in Quake II @ 800x600. And it looks fine, even on my 19" monitor.

So now, what would any home user need 128MB of RAM on their graphics card for, at this point? Are the games really going to become so complex in the next couple of years that they would require that much RAM on board? I can understand why, in a professional/commercial environment, one might need a really high-powered video card... for special effects in movies, or just general professional graphics/video work. But how much RAM do you *really* need in your video card?
