Who are they going to pay to sift through all the traffic to which they will have enhanced access? What software are they going to use to red-flag suspicious phrases in e-mails and transferred files, visits to dubious websites, etc.? It may seem crass that universities are protesting this on the basis of poor cost-benefit ratio rather than civil rights, but the cost issue is real.
