  2. Force Users to Linux....? on Spammers Using Hacked Machines as Decoys · · Score: 1

Well now there's a thought...! Let's remove the customer's right to choose by forcing their hand because, quite honestly, we know better than the user what they need to run on THEIR computer - the one that THEY paid for with THEIR money. When we get the market sequestered we can embrace standards that are "OK" and extend them to make them better. After all - we know better what those standards need to be than the common user - and we'll rule the computer world so people will have to use our stuff.

What a great idea - what should we call our empire..? How about SoftMicro...? or LinuxSoft...?

How about we win customer support by earning it with a superior product that the customer chooses because it is simply better - and we work hard to continue to make it better and more worthy of customer migration by it's very merit. A harder method but it has been done in the face of an 800lb gorilla - to wit: AMD...

A saying my father taught me: "Winners compare their accomplishments to their goals, losers compare their accomplishments to the accomplishments of others." We need to stop worrying about Microsoft and start worrying about Linux. I would rather gain customer acceptance because Linux was a great product than because Micrsoft sucked. That means we only have to suck less to win - how about we just don't suck at all... Now there's a worthy goal...

It's entirely possible that the only way Linux will become a viable desktop alternative is if people must use it.

Do you realize what you just said here...? And what, exactly, makes MS so unpopular in this forum again...? Something about the consumer not having a choice??? So the idea is to "force" people to "acknowledge alternatives"...?

Am I the only one who sees the irony in this statement??

And he is not alone in this train of thought, I have read it here numerous times.

Some (those of us who weren't pooping yellow when MS was young) might remember that Microsoft was going to save us from the corporate mainframe giants like IBM, Wang, Data Gen, Unisys, DEC, etc. They were the hero of the day at the time and they had to be mean as hell to fight in that league. Now open source is going to save the world from the evil Microsoft, eh? With thought processes like this one who, then, will save us from Open Source in ten years?

  4. Shuttle alternative launch system unveiled... on Shuttle May Fly Again In '04 · · Score: 0, Troll

NASA administration officials have determined that rocket fuel is "dumber and unsafer" and discontinued its use throughout the organization. When questioned about the decision, part of NASA's "smarter and safer" initiative, Patalie Nortman of NASA's alternative propulsion division had this to say:

"It was simply a matter of investing our money, well, YOUR money actually, in the right place. We opted for a launch system comprised of thousands of high strength polymer rubber bands to effectively 'sling' the shuttle into space. It was incredibly easy and inexpensive to implement. The real cost shifted to our computerized targeting system capable of aiming the shuttle into the proper orbital launch trajectory. Microsoft software was chosen for this critical system because system failure was simply not an option."

Further discussion was cut short as the final seconds of the launch arrived.

Historically the college campus has been the bastion of liberal mindsets. A mindset which is stereotypically supportive of relinquishing personal rights in favor of collective support.

(Translation: collective support = big brother).

Consider this learning venture to be "socio-economic repercussions 101" - when personal control is relinquished, culpability reassigned and/or positions of responsibility abdicated in favor of the security offered by those in authority we may find that those decisions created for the control and oversight of all are not as digestible as those which prompted us to adopt the mindset in the first place.

As touched on above the tracking devices in use within the Unites States are used as an alternative to incarceration, not as a tracking device *after* a sentence is served. We worry about the infringement of rights perpetrated on the convicted but fail to realize that while in prison these individuals are subject to far more oppression than governmental oversight. I can assure you that while serving time within the walls of a correctional facility the precept of "tracking" inmates would not raise the first hackle on even the most liberal neck. Instead, release the inmate prior to the completion of his/her sentence and implement an oversight mechanism and - viola! we have rights violations. It is curtailing illusory freedom that frightens us. It was mentioned in the article that this "blurs the line between guilt and innocence" - I would think the real psychological struggle is contained in blurring the lines between freedom and incarceration...
