You must be horrified every time you get in your car and drive in the U.S. Maybe someday a nice group will voluntarily build you a road to drive on and sewage system to flush your crap away.
My wife had to have her appendics removed last year. We only had to pay $800 dollars for a $46,000 dollar medical bill. Fortunately she works for a fortune 50 company and has damn good insurance with low monthly rates. With her company we only pay $40 a month. If we used my companies plan we would be paying $400 a month for similar insurance. I also work for a major brand name company. We both work in IT and are on the upper-end of the average middle class salary. I can't imagine how bad it is for the other 90% of the country that makes less than us and have children to support.
You can't just break these costly medical bills down to people that were living an un-healthy lifestyle. A lot of people simply can't afford the cost of medical insurance.
Part of that is probably the roots of America's predominant religion - US Christianity stems from Puritan and other sects where being poor wasn't a sin but sloth was - hard work was a virtue
Most religions share the common belief that sloth is a sin. Canada was also founded by missionaries from Christian sects. Why does Canda have a social network?
As a side note - America's disdain for socialism is rooted in the innate distrust of government and a belief in the "American Dream." American's don't like taxes (ask the English about that)so establishing a broad social net funded by high tax rates is very unlikely.
We paid much lower taxes under the British crown. The real issue was with the lack of representation.
Intelligent Design certainly has a place in the classroom.
But not the biology or science classrooms. I'd hope that we've evolved, no pun intended, to the point that we can agree that this might belong in, say, a philosophy classroom. To say that it wholesale "doesn't belong in the classroom" is, I think, a disservice to honest discussions about our existence, further complicated by Creationists who want to do away with the theory and science of evolution completely.
I would say Intelligent Design belongs more in a Mythology classroom. Seriously though, we need to get comfortable with other's views of religion or lack of religion. It would be nice if there was a class which devoted equal time to all faiths. However, I see the potential for a lot of abuse. Perhaps they should teach these classes as optional only classes.
Not the "vast tracks [sic] of land"... if you want land, China has a lot more than we do!
Vast land was only important when we were an agrarian society. China has vast land but it is also owned by the State. Historically it has been opportunity which has caused immigrants to come to the U.S. 100 year ago it was vast land which could be owned privatly and cheaply. Sure you could own land privately in Europe if you were wealthy nobility. The U.S had land available on the cheap. Since the agrarian society has passed it is now jobs in industry and Corporations. Again the U.S. had a head start after WWII since we were the only major industrialized nation that had infrastructure unctouched by major Wars. What advantage will we have in the future? Unless there is a major world event that works out U.S.A's advantage it looks like the future is starting to go overseas. I wouldn't be too alarmed. We will still be a power. However, we will have to be much more diplomatic with countries.
I don't like the current Republican platform. However, I won't compare the current party to the 1860's Republicans. Parties change over time. What really concerns me is that the current Republican party is being run by people that started their political career in the 1960's and 1970's. This was a time when the Republican party ran pro-segregation as a wedge issue in the south. The Northern Democrats did the the right thing which was to abolish segregation. The Republicans saw it as an opportunity to gain a foothold in the South. Not suprisingly the South which was once solid Democrat now votes Republican.
Politcs is a dirty game. All sides have their problems. However, I find it very hard to support a party which is led by people that did not have an issue with segregation and the civil situation of minorities when they started their political careers in the 1960's and 1970's. A northern Republican may have an excuse as they may not have seen the real problems in the south. Any Southern Republican that is in power now has no excuse as they saw the affects of racism and segregation first hand. I would question any Southern Republicans morals and ask them why they chose the Republican party during the civil rights movement.
Obviously you have never owned a TI book. All my friends including me that have the TI books from 2001 to 2002 have broken hinges. The TI book looks damn expensive. When your hinge breaks and you can't close your laptop will you call the hinge inexpensive or cheap?
This is more a discussion on sytax. Cheap can be used many ways. The TI book hinges were damn expensive but cheap ( in quality not expense )as they broke easily.
I am amazed that your post got modded up since you are only trolling with verbage. You are not adding anything useful to the parents comment regarding this being a big chance for Linux. Well, why isn't MS's push for DRM on monitors a big chance for Apple who already has a viable desktop solution for all ranges of computer users.
Next you will probably tell me that an Apple is something to eat a range is something you cook on. You should consider a career in political talk radio.
We're already there. Don't you remember Enron? A side note to their huge accounting scandal was what they were doing in California. They were basically trying to bring California's grid to it's knees to increase their profits.
By the way I believe England went Private with their rail system and now have one of the least realiable services in Europe.
Not sure if you are familiar with London. But it has a huge immigrant population from East Asia. Their is a pretty good amount of Racial tension between native English and East Asians.
Muslim Imigrants in a lower economic class, Racial tension, Current events in the middle east....
I don't think I have to tell you that those conditions make extremists.
Good point. London has a huge east Asian population. Their are also racial tensions between these minorities and the native English people. I am American but I lived in london back in 2001 and 2002 and was surprised by the tension as the U.S. doesn't have that tension with the East Asian population. I felt that the tension was probably greater than the current racial issues in the U.S. I could easily see how troubled young muslims could be easily swept up into a terror organization in England. The racial tensions, economic status of immigrants in the U.K. and current events in Iraq make for fertile grounds for extremists.
Keep in mind that busses are pretty heavily used at all times in London. A double decker bus is an icon of London. Thus it also makes a good target for terrorist media intentions
You should also recall that Bush has spoke about economic revitalization in areas that are suffering economic blight.
Please read the following article.
The most important line....
Empowerment Zones will encourage public-private partnership to generate economic development in some of the nation's most distressed urban communities.
Apparently this is made possible by the 2000 Community Renewal Tax Relief Act. Keep in mind that the Republicans have had control of congress since 1996....
This is part of the Republican agenda. The republicans control everything right now. And have Controlled everything but the White house for the past 10 years. The Democrats are not in a position to impose an agenda on the country. If the Democrats could drive an agenda with such a minority then that means the Republican party is incompetent and unable to control the Nation's agendas.
Your basis is wrong.
For true Conservatives it is all about State's Rights.
For Neo-Cons such as Bush W it has a different meaning. Read this article from 2002. The most important line of the article:
Empowerment Zones will encourage public-private partnership to generate economic development in some of the nation's most distressed urban communities.
It is refered to in Neo-Con circles as economic revitalization. Bush has mentioned it numerous times in the past few years. Does this mean Bush is a Big government Liberal? Most likely you haven't been paying close attention to the important news which is actually boring legislature.
On a side not this is also related to Bush's bluring of seperation of church and state by opening Tax payers money to "Faith based initiatives".
Like it or not this leaves it up to the state to pass the law. It removes a federal road block. You should be happy and rejoice as you are obviously not a liberal and voted the Republicans into office. The Republicans now control Both houses of Congress, The Senate, Supreme Court (7-2), and the White house. It's ridiculous to blame liberals/democrats when the Republicans control everything. Unless you are telling me the Republicans are incapable of controlling the nations agenda when they have such a strong majority....
Notice: I said Northern Democrats. The republicans just sat by during the civil rights movements of the 1960's. Also, don't compare the Republican party of the 1860's to todays party. It is a complete different party today as is the Democrats. Perhaps you would like to compare the Torri and Wig party in the U.S. of today as compared to 200 years ago.
We wouldn't have 27 amendments to the constitution was crystal clear. The architects of the constitution new that times and people change. The document had to be flexible. This is business as usual for the constitution. The thing that gets me is that this decision makes really strange bed-fellows as it is basically a victory for states rights.
I don't think any one really gets today's decision. It makes for very strange bedfellows.
1. Conservatives are for states rights. This effectively gets rid of a federal road block and allows the state to make the decision. Now the conservatives are complaining because Big Government isn't guaranteeing their rights. Very interesting as the reason why the South now votes Republican is due to Northern Democrats telling the southerners that they could no longer treat black people like second class citizens.
2. The Neo-Cons welcome this as it opens up business. They may have a point. However, their point does not matter because the decision should be in line with constitution.
3. The Democrats are appalled because like the conservatives this is not what they wanted. However, because 2 of the justices happen to be nominiated by Dems it is now the Liberals fault for this happening.
The 5 justices probably interpreted the constitution correctly. There are cases where private companies can bring opportunites into an area. It would be just as bad if the federal government did not allow a business to come into a area that is in need of economic revival. This will also be more important to local governments since Federal aid is being slashed and they have to be more self reliant than in the past. This is simply beyond the scope of the constitution and probably should be left to the local government to pass it's own laws. The four that voted against were most likely voting on their personal feelings and those legislating from the bench. Which is what they should not be doing.
"Neo-Conservative", falling away from the traditional budget hawk positions to a Nationalistic "protect the citizens at all costs"
I would say that Neo-Cons are more woried about Empire than protecting it's citizens. It's really a read herring to say that they are strong on Defence. Our military is by far the most powerful in the world even under the post cold war restructuring under Bush Sr. and Clienton. This ruling is actually a victory for the Neo-Cons. The Neo-Con movement seemed to grow out of the Nixonian period. Remember that Bush Sr. and Rummy were close to Nixon. I personally would not be suprised if the Republican party eventually has a schism between the Conservatives and the Neo-cons.
I hear a lot of bickering about politcal sides on the supreme court on this issue and that is ridiculous. There is a 7 to 2 ratio between the judges picked by politcal party. It's ridiculous to call the 3 republican appointed judges as liberal. If they are liberal then many more republicans must be more liberal than they claim. The justices are supposed to interpret the constitution. They are not supposed to legislate from the bench. These cases get up to the supreme court due to an existing politcal agenda beyond their control. That being said like it or not they probably interpreted the constitution the correct way.
This is a big victory for States' Rights since this ruling removes a federal roadblock.
This is also a victory for the portion of hard core capatlists in the Republican party.
The real failure is why the media did not cover this sooner. The media has really failed to alert the public to a ruling which potentially has huge impacts.
If you equate Charity with Socialism, then I can understand how you are confused. Perhaps explaining the difference will clear things up for you.
Charity - voluntary giving
Socialism - compelled confiscation
You must be horrified every time you get in your car and drive in the U.S. Maybe someday a nice group will voluntarily build you a road to drive on and sewage system to flush your crap away.
