Good point it is a license. I remember getting a few letters in the mail when I first moved into a flat. I was kind of pissed (American pissed = angry not drunk) because I didn't have a TV at first and had to call and explain the situation. I would gladly pay a license in the US to get the quality of BBC programming.

I seem to remember advertising on some Brittish TV. However, now that I remember I also got ITV sometimes on the terestrial stations. Perhaps it was ITV that had the comercials. Either way the commercials were a lot less fequent than American TV.

Actually Step one is tax TV. The BBC is funded by Brittish Tax Payers and a bit by selling TV advertising. Ever notice that their website doesn't contain ads? Now they are sharing their IP to the rest of the world. It's Socialism at it's finest. The BBC is the worlds largest news/content provider. Why can't capitalist news organizations overtake the BBC? Instead we get comercial and ad ridden news and content. I've also noticed lately that there are quite a bit of U.S. television shows which are spin offs from the BBC. Whats the deal? Isn't Capitalism supposed to always be superior? It seems as the BBC is one of the most inovative content providers in the world.

If you consider that the Bush Family had been in political contact with Nixon since 1946 you can really begin to see the shaping of our current political situation. It's actually pretty un-nerving to think of the power and influence that the Bush family has. It's amazing how Bush Sr. built the power. "Yup overly complicated. Science is simply coming up with an explanation for what we see around us. It has nothing to do with testing our stories. If enough people believe the story being told, it is science.

Science isn't about people simply "believing" what they are told. That is the definition of faith. Science is the process of making observations, then hypothesis, publishing these hypothesis and opun further analysis and testing they become theories. If the theory always holds true then it becoms a law. Science is dependent on this system of research and proofing the research to be true. Faith is not based on research and proofing. Faith is based on what someone else has told you and accepting it as fact.

Go ahead and try to shoot down the theory of Evolution. If you could provide proof Scientists around the world would praise you and you would be more popular than Darwin. Notice that Evolution has never been rescinded as it can not be disproved as evidence is every where. On the flip side it is not called a Law due to the sensitivity of the issue. Just as Gallieo was persicuted so is Evolution. Unfortunatly, religion is still interfering in Science.

Agreed on that point. However, what it sounds like they are trying to do is to get BitKeepers mojo for free. BitKeeper runs on linux and doesn't have a major market share. If it didn't run on linux I could see the argument of reverse engineering. For example SMB, WINE, MS Office format. This isn't a case of them using BitKeeper and deciding to write an application which works like BitKeeper. This is a case of them specifically trying to figure out the process behind BitKeeper. In a way they are basically trying to see how the engine works and then copy the engine. This is much different then being inspired by a product and wanting to create an improved product with your own skill.

I don't think that Wine and Samba are moral no-no's. Neither of the apps mentioned have a Linux equivilent. Thus you can not run them on linux. BitKeeper can be run on Linux. Therefore reverse engineering BitKeeper is really just trying to get their propeitary work. Thus they shouldn't try to reverse engineer BitKeeper. They should strive to write an new app which is better than BitKeeper.

Oh, wait. That's morally "wrong". So says the guy working on a clone of the UNIX operating system. Something doesn't quite add up here.

UNIX was and is open source. That is one of the reasons why it survived and spread heavily in the Universities and in commercial variants as opposed to VAX. Hell even the first DOS OS had bits of UNIX in it. Linux was not the first OS to learn from the original UNIX. See SUN, AIX, BSD, and just about any other *NIX that has come out since the original Bell Labs Unix was written. However, BitKeeper is not open source. If BitKeeper wishes to keep their source proprietary then it is morally wrong.

I think you are looking back with rose colored glasses. The U.S. was a tough place to live back then. Europe was an even tougher place to live. The transition from Agg to Industy during this time left a huge portion of the European population in poverty. There were even some extreme cases of 90% un-employment. These people imigrated in droves to America for the oppurtunity to own land and get out of poverty. However, our cities were still teaming with corruption and poverty. If you had the means to make it out of the city and own farming land after immigrating then you could run your own destiny. I believe you are forgetting about those that were stuck in the cities. These people didn't have much choice. Either take a 16 hour a day factory job or starve. Their life wasn't much different than the one they left behind in Europe.

Your anger should be at the Military Industrial complex which we have built. Like it or not we are an Empire. Empires are expensive. Our foreign spending dwarfs the domestic spending especially welfare. Europe and Canada spend a greater percentage of their money on domestic spending. They also provide more welfare. In some cases their welfare may be extreme. In others it is good. There is a myth that Canadians and Europeans pay more taxes than U.S. Your average Canadian/European pays the same or less in taxes.
