Also noteworthy is that you can run PHP scripts from the shell prompt or a cron job, by compiling PHP as an executable CGI and using it as an interpreter just like Perl.

So, you can write the web site and the offline background stuff in the same language.

Not that this has anything to do with the original poster's search for J2EE solutions.

Yes, but they are godawfully difficult to administer, especially sendmail. I set up a mail server the other day for an NT manager, and he was just rolling his eyes as I tried to teach him how to handle adding users, maintaining virtusertable, aliases, .forward files, simple mailing lists, etc. He's like "this is absolutely nuts." And I have to say that I agree with him.

Um, DSL? IP telephony? Video on demand?

The telecom industry is still very heavily regulated. It's no wonder working DSL is so hard to get. The FCC is trying to force ILECs to cooperate with CLECs, but it is never going to work. I say we do away with regulations that prevent multiple telco/cable comapnies from wiring the last mile, then stand back and let them all compete for customers.

Blah. I had troubles with this card a few years ago, mostly with multicast AppleTalk (netatalk) traffic. The driver may be mature now, but a year or two ago it wasn't, as I found a lot of list postings from others having problems with it. Swapped a 3Com in instead and had no problems. In fact, I have never, ever had a problem with a 3Com card under any OS, so that's what I've been sticking with over the years.

They don't handle patches under my plan (I handle those via ssh) but I have dealt with their support department several times (reboots, and a hardware failure) and they have been very professional. I did have some difficulty once, straightening out some billing issues with their mostly Spanish-speaking staff in that department. It took two days of faxes and emails and a lot of patience on both sides before we were able to overcome the language barriers and get things in order.

Anyway, I would definitely recommend Dialtone to anyone looking for a dedicated server.
