Diablo 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. The fact that it is still on top selling game charts every now and then (this July and August i think) tells something. There was nothing that hadn't been done in this game. It just all came together so well as to be a classic. Blizzard often does this with games. Many of their titles are not 100% original but are standouts in the genre.
It is a matter of priorities. If you are a gamer you will follow the games. If you are a linux-zealot then you follow the OS. I for one am a gamer. I would follow a great game anywhere (i even bought a gamecube and i hate that thing...but i wanted to play smash brothers).
Games based on a movie/book/whatever can indeed be good. While Fellowship Of The Ring was indeed a poor game, Two Towers which came out around the same time was quite good. Games suck all the time even if they are not made based on an existing property. If the developer actually tries to make a good game and not a quick buck then i think these types of games have as much a chance of being a quality product as anything else.
