  1. Napster hack on An MP3 Update · · Score: 2

Just download an early 2.0 release of Napster from zdnet.com, it doesn't have any of the banning code. Worked for me after a few uninstalls.

  2. Re:Creation and Evolution/Big Bang are Orthogonal on Material From Solar System's Earliest Moments? · · Score: 2

I don't think a significant number of people really can accept any proof for the non-existance of god, as described by religious traditions.

In light of things such as scientific cosmology, constantly changing 'eternal truths', and the collective history of religious organizations they either redefine god, pushing it into more abstract (untestable) realms, keep strict fundamental beliefs, or decide not to decide.

Personaly, I think there's plenty of evidence for the non-existance of god but if religion has taught us anything its that it exists because it responds the psychology of indivduals not because of any tests or proof.

The fence-sitters really are waiting for one of two things, the final nail in the religious coffin (which is impossible) or the next modern-friendly definition of god (which can be anything). This game can go on forever.

I think its about time the collective religious people just give up. Both liberal and fundamental religions constantly are proving how archaic they are, either through the silly redefinition game or through oppressive demands to keep with strict tradition.

Of course this won't happen until everyone on a very personal level stops playing the fence sitter's redefinition game about god, gods, spirits, karma, or enlightenment and question heavily indoctrined fundamentalist thinking.

Seriously, give it up, its sad and in the end helps turn people into sheep, and I don't mean the nice Jesus kind.

Theory is the end of the scientific method. Law is for legal matters.

  5. Slashdot owns the posts on Microsoft Asks Slashdot To Remove Readers' Posts · · Score: 1

Most if not all these posts fall under 'fair use' and /. readers DO NOT own their posts, MS will *rightly* argue. Katz's book is proof enough. Using whole posts without giving credit in a commercial book sounds like /. owns the posts. /.'s own hypocrisy is gonna catch up with it.

  6. Beatles? on Napster Bans Metallica Fans · · Score: 2

  7. Where's the hack? on Napster Bans Metallica Fans · · Score: 2

  8. They've already lost their TM on More Fun With "For Dummies" Trademarks · · Score: 2

Every outlet that sells IDG's for dummies books has another set of books with the same bright neon lettering/font about the exact same topics written for the exact same demographic except they're called 'The complete idiot's guide to...'

I've always seen this as a ripoff of IDG that might confuse some consumers, but the lawsuit will never happen as the Idiot's guide people will point out 'for dummies' has had lots of prior use and marketing books to people who consider themselves clueless is nothing new. Because Idiot's guide has money for litigation they're left alone.

IDG will pick on the non-corporate entities because they are completely defenseless. This has nothing to do with protecting trademarks, its about controling what comes out of a search engine after you type 'for dummies' into it and trying to build credibility with an obviously fake, stolen, and unoriginal trademark.

  9. Dummies for Dummies on More Fun With "For Dummies" Trademarks · · Score: 2

Oh come on, do a little homework before you're off kissing corporate ass. Not only is for' dummies' common english words and not original creations they've been used a million times in print and belong to a title of a book from the 70's.

Second, satire, parody, and reference allow the use of trademarks/copyrights with both commercial and non-commercial uses.

This gets even worse when non-profit or personal web pages use the term and IDG, and other corporate bullies, get to show off their legal muscle.

I don't buy 'we're protecting our TMs' line, when most uses fall under fair use. The issue is about making sure customers get to the proper IDG website when they type the words 'For Dummies' into any search engine and not some site that might give them free information of *gasp* criticize their product or politics.

  10. Re:Stupid users, not stupid microsoft on Intel FDIV bug vs ILUVYOU · · Score: 2

Considering this worm runs itself through the preview panel, in Outlook that is, I find it hard to blame 'stupid' users, especially when most people know the damage .exe files can do to their system. "Don't run executables from people you don't know," didn't do much for ILOVEYOU.

Microsoft targets its products to new users, hey we were all ignorant once, I put the blame squarely on MS and the IT managers who use Exchange and Outlook for critical services. The 'stupid' user *should* be using software that is secure, false advertising and forcing users to use unsecure software at work is not their fault.

  11. One or the other on Washington Supreme Court Upholds Shrinkwrap Licensing · · Score: 2

How about advertising claims like "unstoppable" NT or "98% uptime" then you read the disclaimers that admit its all BS.

I'm getting slightly off-topic here but if a company can't back up its claim with a reasonable warranty should they be allowed to make any advertising claims at all?

  12. News from the homefront on Hubble Spots Long-Sought Intergalactic Gas · · Score: 2

Seldom-sought gas found in bathroom an hour after my dad ate a spicy meal. Scientists are now designing the first methane powered fan and are close to solving the mystery of the missing meatloaf. Standard olfactory tests do suggest the meatloaf was consumed by father, but until further tests are performed it is still speculation.

  14. Its just FFR on Controlling Your Computer with Your Brain · · Score: 2

I think many /. posters either didn't read the article or didn't quite grasp it. This has nothing to do with reading minds, its just a clever use of the frequency following response. If you watch a 10-hz light or listen to 10-hz binaural beats your mind's electrical activity tends to match the signal.

With practice you can get better and faster syncronization, as seen since the 60's with Light/Sound machines or Cranial Electro Stimunators and an EEG. Though these devices are used to train people to get into relaxing or stimulating mind states its still the same technology. Not even half as interesting as that IBM quantum interface posted last week.

If anyone wants to play with binaural beats, this is a nice shareware generator.

  15. MS friendly news on I Love You "Virus" Hates Everyone · · Score: 5

I know this is a cliche, but where's the outrage? This is the *second* worldwide virus that uses the same type of security leak in 2 years. What I do see is lots of techies saying "I told you so," while the popular press is very uncritical of MS and Outlook. When will the press use words like 'very unsecure' when describing Outlook or just MS in general?

What do you think is the % of people who will quit using Outlook after being hit by this? 5% 1% 0%? If the press would do its job, namely informing and protecting the layman we'd see a lot less Outlook users. Instead we get 'don't open this mail, which is useless when the preview pane is always on' and 'all is well, download new virus updates, MS is still your friend.'

  16. The Law? on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 2

A few points on 'the law' here as the above poster is fond of talking about. Exactly which laws prove that Napster Inc or the end users are at fault for anything? Copyrights? Are you refering to bootleg laws? Where is the money? The point of sale? Where's the proof of a violation? How many search warrants have been issued, don't know whats in my CD collection without breaking the door in.

This case is important because it will define and set a precedent for what can and can't be done online. Don't assume anything illegal has been done until we see the results of the courts. Innocent until... You know what I'm talking about.

Its the company that invests, promotes, and produces this Backstreet Boys for AlternaTeens band. Instead of handing them this legaly dangerous money just donate the $15 bucks to charity unders Lars's name.

I can't wait to see the next press release if this catches on, "Pirates, stop donating my money to charity!"

  21. X-Prize dangerous and stupid on Mysterious Cold War Spacecraft Designs! · · Score: 2

Who are these idle millionaires who are supporting this prize? Why not invest this cash with a reputable company they think has major potential instead of setting up this little trust to hasten something that takes time to do right and when isn't done correctly might just kill test pilots and passengers?

I've seen this Diamandis character on TV, all he needs is a persian cat and a monocle and he's a damn Bond Villian. Nothing stinks of insincerity like talking about how there are expected casualties in the new privte space race. Screw him, no one's life is worth his prize and private developers should take the responsible and slow way to develop a reusable 'space' tourist craft.

This badboy's rocket, Energia, could lift 4 times the tonnage compared to the space shuttle's engine and booster, it even had an automatic landing program.

  24. More 'great' defenses on Dr. Dre Might Sue Napster Users? · · Score: 3

How's this: I only wanted 2 Dr. Dre songs but his monopolistic recording company bundled these other songs with the pacakge and is forcing consumers to pay extra for something they don't want.

Or, I'm protesting his illegal use of Lucasfilm's THX deep note by downloading and listening to his songs, though I would never buy his albums he believes I'm huring him. This may be illegal but it is a crime of protest and passion, if you find me guilty 10,000 angry Star Wars fans will tear this courthouse down and string Dre like the hypocrite he is.

You should be paying mefor MY services! I'm giving the record industry a free wake up call. Their ancient CD format and pricing schemes will not be tolerated any longer. Viva compressed formats, rewritable digital media, and cheap music.

Screw Dre, he probably realized what Lucas is gonna take from him and is gonna make it back by suing you and me. Exactly what part of the gangsta-rap tradition involves copyright protection when the whole genre evolved from ripping off hooks and melodies of other artists and *talking* over it.

  25. Screw the command line on Brilliant Careers: Robert Moog · · Score: 2

Simple and intuitive interfaces work just fine and as long as powerusers have access to command prompts I don't see a problem. If Keisler thinks there aren't any complex instruments out there he hasn't been to his local music store lately, check out some of the high-end synths for a dazzling display of features and buttons.

I think what he's responding to is how electronica is heavily loop based and you can literally make a song with only pressing a few buttons. It won't be original, but it'll be cliched enough to dance to.
