  1. encryption? on Privacy Concerns On Google's 30 Day Data Policy · · Score: 1

Couldn't they encrypt the data in such a way that they (Google) couldn't even read it? Perhaps data could be encrypted/decrypted client-side so the their servers never even know the decryption keys...?

  2. Re:Site looks pretty plain to me on Interview with Joshua Schachter of del.icio.us · · Score: 5, Insightful

    You missed something.

The site is incredibly useful--think of it as a searchable collection of human-filtered and categorized web sites. I often use it when search results from Google and other search engines aren't quite giving me what I'm looking for.

  3. Stop featuring stories with "viral" advertising on GameTap Rom Rental Service to Launch · · Score: 1

It's just advertising and not a story. The editors are playing right into the hands of the marketing folk who come up with this crap.

...Unfortunately, the service requires Windows 2000 or XP, but even Mac and Linux users can enjoy the viral marketing campaign.

It's not enjoyable, and it's only viral because the /. editors keep posting about it.

  4. It doesn't matter... on Majority Of Customers Prefer Blu-Ray · · Score: 1

Streaming, on-demand video is the future.

I think both of these formats have an uphill battle against the fact that we aren't far away from a subscription service with access to a library of HD-quality movies and shows...

This for example, was most recently in the news.

  5. When exactly will they allow activation? on Half Life 2 Available, Delays Not Valve's Fault · · Score: 2, Informative

Does anyone know when exactly they will allow you to unlock the game?

I know it's supposed to happen on the 16th, and I assume midnight, but is that EST or perhaps GMT?

Or if they go strictly by the international dateline, then in the U.S. we really only have to wait until roughly midday on Monday to play.

  6. awesome on Google Acquires Keyhole Corp. · · Score: 1

Since Google can see what I search for, and read all my email, it just makes sense that they can zoom in on my exact location anywhere on Earth.

  7. EXTENDED version? on LotR: RotK Extended Edition Preview Available · · Score: 1, Troll

How about a CONDENSED version?! I think that all three movies could be condensed into a single 2.5-3 hour film that would actually be GOOD. Then they can edit together all the shots where the camera is slowly zooming in or out on Elijah Wood's face on a separate special edition 1.5 hour disc for all you LOTR suckers.

  8. Re:They need to be easily upgradeable. on NYT: The New Breed of Gaming Laptops Get Serious · · Score: 5, Informative

They are upgradeable-- "Upgradeable Video Modules"

  9. windows based PVR? on Build Your Own PVR · · Score: 1

I know this goes against building a Linux PVR--but I have a second computer that sits around recording TV daily running XP, handling file backups, and running Apache. I have an ancient ATI TV Wonder PCI card that records simply using the ATI Multimedia Center software (mpeg-4 compression). Recorded TV is dumped into a shared folder that can be accessed by my roommates, and managing duplicate shows and weekly recording is all done with Windows Scheduler and batch files...it's not difficult to set up at all, and best of all, it works almost flawlessly.
