One of the main reasons I don't use Firefox is because I alternate between Explorer and IE all the time. Basically, it is the integration with the desktop that keeps me using it. If Firefox does begin to integrate with the filesystem i'll switch.

Perhaps you are not aware of the role of the university scientist. Maybe if you went to some small liberal arts college or a community college the primary role would be to teach. Here at Yale, up until about 40 years ago senior professors didn't have to teach at all. The fact is, is that most professors at research universities are there because they can "be their own man/woman" and pursue their research interests -- they don't go there to teach, that is secondary. In fact a major complaint often is that the professors are not very good teachers, and I will tell you, unless they are dead wood sitting on Tenure, they are not there because they do second rate research. My experience is that most of the best and the brightest actually stay in academia, while cunsulting in industry.
I think one of the reasons it may be chaper is because one f the major leaders in laser eye surgery was based out of calgary hence a lot of the early development came out of there and no doubt a lot of people have worked out of those offices -- people who happen to be canadian as well and probably went on to start their own practices. As a canadian laser eye surgery seems to be more "common" in Canada than I have seen it in the states.
In addition, I have found that america charges a lot for professional services so it doesn't surprise me that it is more expensive in the states.
As for more expensive being better? Well I kow Giumbel eye center is one of the first, and most respected ones, and they are based out of calgary -- if I was going to get it done, regardless of which was cheaper, I would be going back to Calgary to get it done. Pardon me if I just don't trust the idea of an American pointing a laser at my eyes!:)

I disagree that publishing on the web is cheap because for a hi quality journal you have to have editors, graphic designers, basically full time staff. Someone has to pay for it! If we don't have any centralized source we might not be able to get good peer reiview anymore. The other option is that the individuals would be charged to publish their papers which would likely reduce the overall number of publications, which is not always a bad thing, but we could loose important science this way.
Besides, you can get these journals for free -- just go visit your library.
I find it interesting that so many people are so quick to come up with problems when a new idea is put forward. New ideas always have problems but they are important starting points for better ideas. If you simply start criticising I don't imagine you will have the imagination to take it farther.
welcome our new four-legged picture sorting overlords!
