5. In order to perform #2, remove the football program from the school and instead funnel all of that money to the teachers.
6. Do not give special treatment to students based on sports.
7. Return to a institution of LEARNING instead of socializing and playing football.
I agree with most of your points, but think you need to forego a little of your animosity... did someone lose a girlfriend, or get beaten up a few times?:)
Sports is not the antichrist here... and yes, football IS a sport. As little as I personally value it, that sport brings in a lot of money for the highschool... money that is also funneled into educational projects and clubs.
Playing a sport in highschool is just as valuable to a student as joining an academic club, national honors society or any other extra-curricular activity. You learn a lot of things while involved in a sport... including, but not limited to:
Organizational skills Teamwork Strategy Elation and Disapointment Interaction on Many Different Levels Discipline
These experiences and skills prove highly valuable in college and when entering the work force... no matter what field your interest lies with.
If it actually works like they say it does, then it is definately a good thing. It will help with safety, allow them to help the violent kinds, and REDUCE the geek profiling that is taking place in the schools. It'll show the administrators that being different is not what makes kids dangerous.
Well spoken, and something I did not even think about.
By demanding a "leave us kids alone" attitude, you only further the inclination of teachers to stereotype the weird and different ones. Instead of fearing these kids, teachers need to (and I believe that this testing might help take away that fear) learn to work with them, and promote the talents that they do have.
While I have no problem with testing being done, this testing should be implemented at a much younger age than high school. Most kids have learned to lie way too well by high school age. And it is much more difficult to council a high schooler (not saying a waste of time mind you).
But if there are problems, they can and should be identified WAY before high school. I just see much more value to counciling at a younger age, when a lot of habits are still being formed.
It was pointed out before that this is not "geek profiling".
Christ, this makes it sound like the questions being asked are similar to:
Do you like computers for more than the occasional game or internet and e-mail?
Do you play any role playing games?
Do you have acne?
Are you skinny or over-weight?
Do you play sports?
It is not that simple! If you have ever taken an abnormal psych, or even a college level psych class you would know this.
They are not looking for "geeks", they are looking for violently inclined kids. Most people realize that has little to do with geeks! There is something mentally wrong with violent students, and this profiling has, and does work in identifying them. It is not as simple as, "You are different or weird... therefore you must be violent and a danger to society". Gimem a break.
That a universal method for testing kids may be implemented is not what I am concerned with. The real concern should be what do they do with these kids if they have been profiled as violent?
When considering that, I believe we come to the real problem and potential for harm and abuse.
Well, IBM was the computer maker of the 70's. Compaq was the success story of the 80's, and Dell is kicking ass in the 90's.
Dell represents the new way of doing things... and many companies are learning from them.
How many can remember all the companies that were making computers in the early 80's? There were tons... and the vast majority are out of business or do not make computers anymore at all. The fact that Compaq rose from this, and did so well, leaves me to believe that they will be able to adapt and they will continue to do well in the future... just as IBM is doing well now.
now, many of your "life/relationship wisdom" nuggets are good ones, but quite a bit of the overtone is outdated and frankly a bit sexist.
I think people need to lighten up. A good dose of sexism is fun and healthy... as long as it is taken somewhat lightly.
Sure, I am sexist, I admit it. I think there are inherent differences between how men and women behave and react to certain situations. Those differences can be funny, and there is no reason to pretend they do not exist.
I also feel a need to, and enjoy "protecting" the women I date.
I still believe in "ladies first", and when walking arm in arm, the man should walk on the street side. I will open doors and shiver in the cold after giving away my jacket. Maybe it potrays a sense of fragility that is not present for woman, but I enjoy doing these things... call me a caveman.
I like bitching about women and their ways, and I enjoy hearing others bitch about men and their ways. I like going out with the "guys" on occasion... and then being made fun of for the stupid things we do. I also enjoy making fun of her when she goes out with the "gals", and the stupid things they do.
Sexism is fine... as long as there is mutual respect.
my $400/mo. student loan payments suck rather bad.
Amen. Right now that loan is just a huge thorn in my side. Sure, I could defer it into oblivion, but I really want to get the damn thing paid (I am also on the accelerated program). But, despite my bitching, I really think it was worth it. I was employed almost immediately after college, and my degree never fails to impress people.
Also, more on this loan thing... I did not go to a private college because my parents were rich, or because my grades stood far out from the crowd. I went because I wanted to.... that is what was important to me. And I (as well as you) took the loans that would enable me to do it.
ok... so do you eliminate private colleges? do you make college an entirely publicly funded venture?
I think that would be a large mistake.
This is done in Canada with health care. Where do you think the best doctors from Canada go? If you answered the U.S. you would be correct. Where do the wealthy citizens and government officials from Canada go when they need surgery or skilled treatment? If you answered the U.S. again, you would be on a roll.
Here in the United States, we have some of the beast professors from around the globe (and yes, they come from everywhere for the oportunity to teach in the U.S.), and I will gladly support a system where that is nurtured.
I went to a private school, and am now paying loans out of my ass.
However, I think the extra money was worth the attention I got at a smaller school. Although it would have been nice to price shop for schools, I pretty much figured out where I wanted to go, and then made the finanial aspect work.
God, really be careful! I have read so many horror stories about how people have been swindled out of all their life-savings by trusting the wrong people.
Generally people get taken somewhat easily by a flashy swindler throwing around money and producing references from all around the world (really just his buddies). Things are way too easy with the fake ones... they will be less critical of your business plan and financials.
I think I actually saved one article around here somewhere...
I don't think Microsoft is capable of thinking as an upstart company anymore. It's not like they're stepping into a smaller market and injecting more money than competitors can (think the browser wars.) They're going up against GIANTS such as Nintendo and Sony. These guys have been in the game for a long time.
Yes, but isn't that the same exact thing Sony Corp. did to Nintendo and Sega!?
Microsoft is going to have an impact... and just like Sega and Nintendo were shook up with the Playstation, they are going to have to be on their toes if Microsoft rears its ugly head in the console business (they certainly have a *lot* of bargaining tools for developers).
So we haven't come along as far as it was thought huh?
I have seen the "how to attract geek men" and "go to silicon valley" articles that inflate all the egos around here, but the majority of the populace still does not see things that way.
You program computers? You put more effort into your work than your appearance? You are still a geek. Does not matter how much money you are rolling in, or could be a few years down the road. A geek is not someone most girls want to be seen dating.
Go to the bar, look at all the pretty girls. Will any of them talk to you? Not likely. More likely is that there are plenty of just as pretty frat guys dressed in abercrombie & finch shirts and khaki pants who have just as much money as you might (from their parents however), that are getting all their attention.
So sit back and relax. Don't bitch about it. Things are not going to change anytime soon. Do your work, don't get too jaded, and by consensus the magical age being 30, girls start to notice the nice guys, with good jobs and great futures. Hopefully by then, you will have met your own geek girl and can get some satisfaction from ignoring the girls who once ignored you.
You are right... they are up about 10% on the news.

We have talked numerously about the script kiddies, that everyone likes to rip on, for trying to live up to the MTV and movie potrayals of hackers...
But do these books serve as a guideline for future innovations to the internet. I am sure there are some very intelligent people out there right now trying to make the "Metaverse" spoken about in Snow Crash, a reality.
Now these cable companies are suddenly in the ISP business. What does this mean for the customers?
It means that we are going to have the choice of paying for our long distance, local phone service, internet access AND cable TV all in one bill.
Wonderful!
On the other hand... Do you really believe the cable companies are merely going to turn their backs on the ISP's? Seriosuly... no one is going to simply ignore AOL with 18 million customers! They will open up the lines to other ISP's... but they should be able to on their own terms.
Also, AT&T did not pay for their cable empire with government money... and that is who we are talking about now (not the original owners).
The fundamental problem right now concerning high speed access is simply:
We can't get anyone to sell it to us!
In my area, which is far from the Boonies, we are not even scheduled to get anything until at least 2002. Regulations would slow this process down even further!
While one medium gaining a larger share of the marketplace is a valid concern... we should get the technology out first! Your average consumer is not going to give a rat's ass whether they are using DSL, cable or whatever... they are going to jump onto the first one available to them (aas long as it is a reasonable price). I believe there will be plenty of competition between the different mediums to keep prices down and to spur further innovations.

I am curious, what is the consensus here:
Private or public colleges?
If you think about it, our nation's freeways and roads are dangerous as hell.
Everyday, on my way to work, I see an accident. That is just a gruesome facet of life.
In fact, injury is the leading cause of death for people aged 1 - 44 years. Over half of that (55%) is as a result of motor-vehicle accidents.
Motor-vehicle deaths affect Americans way more than fire-arm deaths, and yet it receives very little attention.
Will these new options on cars help? I certainly hope so.
God, really be careful!

Everyone always leaves that out... what's the deal?
I would also suggest Edward Bellamy's Looking Backwards 2000 - 1887 as a quintessential read for all of science fiction.
We also conveniantly foget there are numerous female science fiction writers that put a nice spin on what we are used to.
