SysAdmins and Security Admins are not the sole cause of slow development.
We have a specific role and that is to maintain the uptime and security of the production systems.
That comes at a price, developers can not just do what ever the hell they want when they want. Especially since most of them have no concept of server security. What good is their software if it is running on an owned box?!?
His statement about virus software is totally out of line. Unless his machine matches this description: has no contact with other machines on the netwk, can not get out to the public net, and can not receive e-mail; then and only then can he run his system without virus protection software.
That is just pure stupidity. What's worse, running slow, or having a virus blow away his machine to the point where he loses all of his data/
The one point I will concede that developers should have at the min power user rights if not local admin rights. But it comes with a stipulation, you break it, you fix it. And they run their machines in a dmz/vlan aka A DEVELOPMENT LAB>>>.
