from the animatrix stuff i thought it was the humans that blocked out a sun in an attempt to destroy the machines source of power. That is why the machines turned to using the human body as a battery of sorts.
I think it makes sense that "computer geeks" would be the ones to leave the matrix because they would be more keen to recognize a program andits flaws.
