So basically, just like the first film? No doubt this'll get modded as troll/flamebait, but I didn't see the need for sequels at all. The Matrix was a good film, with an open ending that I thought suited the nature of the film perfectly, and left what happens next to the watchers imagination. The sequels just seemed like sequels for sequels sake and I feel actually detract from the imagination and impact of the first film. Not least because they somehow had to bring Neo down from being all powerful at the end of Matrix 1 which casts doubt that the directors/writers intended the series to be a trilogy in the first place.

close off the movie with Neo being a bad ass, so that the movie actually ends, then have to go back on that because you do get to make the sequals that you wanted to make, or

leave the movie hanging at the end, so that a sequal that might not happen will connect better.

quite frankly, if the movie had left it open so that they could make reloaded, then i don't think it would have been as popular.

It starts off with a long tracking shot, the camera flying along 3 huge powerlines in the desert of the real which seem to go on forever, before finally going over a rise as we see that they extend for many more miles beyond. Cut to the shot of Neo looking at that huge machine overlord orb-thing that we see in the "Control" spot, only we get more of the start of it, which actually shows that Neo is standing on the edge of some huge ledge or something, looking out over one of the "growing field" as the orb rises up infront of him and says "SPEAK!"

Fade to black, voiceover by Neo "The program Smith has grown beyond your control. You cannot stop him, but I can" various shots of Smith are played over the end of this, including the one of Smith stepping into the middle of the long raining street we've seen in the teasers, plus one of him that I'm 99% sure is him sitting at a table with the Oracle (although we don't actually see her), as well as a couple more shots of Smith and Neo standing in the rain that we've seen before.

"And if you fail?" the booming voice asks, which now appears to have a "face" of sorts. Cut to the shot of Smith flying through the wall and Neo jumping over him that we've all seen before, then back to Neo, his eyes covered in bandages, the same angle as he says the "Smith" bit before in the "Control" spot. "I won't" he replies, after which we see a "jack spike" enter his head, indicating that he jacks into the Matrix immediately after making this 'deal' with the machines.

The green WB/Village Roadshow logos appear, then we get the shot of Trinity from "Help" saying "Do you know what happened to Neo?", then we get a shot of Neo against the white wall of the train station, followed by the one of that huge war machine from the teasers.

Oracle voiceover: "He is trapped in a place between this world and the machine world." As she says this we get a shot of Neo sitting up on the train station with the white wall behind him, the little girl (Rama's daughter from the newly released pictures) standing by his side, followed by the first ever shot of 01, standing like a giant castle in the desert of the real, surrounded by growing fields. It looks as though it's made up of huge cylinders, all blueish-red in tone, and appears to be absolutely massive.

Fade to white: the shot of Trinity, Morpheus and Seraph descending the stairs into Club Hel that's been shown in many of the teasers plays next and a voiceover by the Merovingian begins. He says "Bring me the eyes of the Oracle and I will give you back your....'saviour'." As he says this we see a new shot of the exiles surrounding Trinity, guns drawn. Then we see Neo standing by a train with Rama and his wife and daughter next to him, the long-haired "Train Man" infront. The Train Man punches Neo in the chest as the family look on, and he goes flying backwards, smashing into the white wall, which breaks on impact (the voiceover is still going on).

Cut to the Merovingian sitting on a sofa/seat talking (so the voiceover technically ends here as we see him speaking the res of it), holding a glass of wine very casually, then to Neo on his hands looking to his side (still in the train station, so obviously looking at the Train Man after having been laid into).

Lots of Matrix code then flies out from the screen, before cutting to, basically, the exact same opening as the "Enemy" TV spot, with Neo having a jack plug pulled from his head, Smith saying "Mr Anderson" (voiceover the shot of Bane waking up that we've seen before instead of the WB/VR logos though like in the TV spot), then Neo saying "Who are you?!" and which a bloodied Bane/Smith replies "Look past the flesh...(cut to 'burning Smith face')...and see your enemy."

Neo - "It's impossible!" then the shot of the dozens of Smith's walking through (we assume) the Oracle's door, before cutting back to Bane with the voice over from him saying "Not impossible - INEVITABLE!" before we once again see the shot o

Really both, IMHO. Yes, they certainly did train, but I never got the feeling they did actual real martial arts training - it seemed more orientated around learning the specific choreography, which is understandable. But the real point is that learning martial arts takes a long time. In my own experience, it was a good three or so years of training (though admittedly less intense than what the Matrix actors did, and I was young) before I felt even basically competent in a comparativly simple martial art like shotokan karate - and still, you certainly wouldn't want to pay to see me do it in a film. I can't imagine how much training people like Jackie Chan or Jet Li had before they started doing it in films, but I would guess at least ten years. Even then, plenty of people do martial arts for that long, and they aren't in films - talent does count for a lot, just like in acting.

Obviously most viewers do seem satisfied with the martial arts in the Matrix films. But I felt that, especially in the more complicated scenes in Reloaded, it just didn't hold up. Very slow, not really smooth - it really seems like they memorized a couple of sets of two or three moves at once and just linked them together, if you can follow me. It doesn't flow right, it feels choppy. Watch in a 'real' martial arts film how the actors will do extended fight sequences against numerous people - they flow well, it really seems like they know martial arts (because they do). The Matrix sequences feel more like the staccato feel of a fighting game - a series of short move combos, roughly linked together.

A lot of people seem to have this reaction, but I just don't understand it. I thought the Reloaded story was much more creative than The Matrix's. I thought The Matrix got by mostly on good pacing and action scenes. I found the story/philosophy side fairly... well, simple.

The Matrix tells us that we're all living inside a virtual reality controlled by machines. And there are some humans in the real world. It's an idea high school stoners come up with all by themselves standing around outside the mall. Morpheus, the Oracle, Neo, Trinity, the folks in Zion--they are all humans. They're good, the machines are bad and all they want to do is free everyone.

We get a glimpse of some interesting questions with Agent Smith. He's a computer program, interacting with the people. But he's fully under the control of the machines like all the other agents. Brings to light some interesting questions, but it's hardly mind-blowing.

Now Revolutions introduces some genuine complexity and interest. Now Zion is partly under the control of the machines. The Oracle is a program, Smith is more of a rogue than under the control of the machines. There are independent programs like those ghosty guys and the oracle who are computer programs but aren't really on the side of the machines. The machines aren't really that concerned if people get out. This is a much more interesting story.

I wasn't really sure after seeing the Matrix where they would go with it. If they had just made another movie of Neo in The Matrix kicking ass, it would definately have sucked. But they didn't--they introduced a whole new depth in all of the characters and drew much grayer more interesting battle lines.

I think in Revolutions they'll continue along this path, where we'll have to question what we assumed about Neo, Morpheus and Trinity, central characters who didn't change much in Reloaded. But that's left to be seen.

As an action flick, it takes the prize for taking what should have been entirely implausible sequences, and setting them in a world where they were entirely believable. The action scenes themselves were pretty good (except for the Neo/Seraph fight, which struck me as gratuitous).

The "random banter" about the nature of free will is simply a continuation of the themes in the original. "The Matrix" was set as a series of choices Neo makes: Cooperate with Smith or protect Morpheus? Stay in the car-full-o-freaks or go home? Red pill, blue pill? Stay on the ship or go back into the Matrix for Morpheus? Run from Smith or stand and fight?

Each choice was critical to Neo becoming "The One," and at the end of Matrix, it seemed like his journey was complete. He had chosen freedom, and was now sovereign over the system.

Then comes Reloaded, which goes deeper into the nature of free will, and reveals some serious limitations to the portrayal of free will in the first film. Yes, Neo was making all these choices, but why? There are serious limitations upon our free will, even if we refuse to recognize them. The machines of Zion aren't sentient, but the brute fact of their existence constrains the free will of the inhabitants. They have no choice but to keep them running. The characters continue to obey the Oracle, even though Neo knows that she is using them for her own ends, which may or may not agree with theirs. In the Architect scene, Neo discovers that he comes from a long line of (programs?) which were created to serve a purpose, just as the agents and the Keymaker were. He is given an ultimatum: Serve, or choose the destruction of everything. He rejects the purpose which was chosen for him, setting the scene for Revolutions.

If you don't recognize that the entire movie was simply putting the discussions into practice, then I can see how the discussions might have a "shoehorned in" feel. But I was thoroughly impressed with how well it was mixed in. I've only touched on a few of the dominant themes. I desperately want to see how Morpheus handles his role as fallen prophet/disappointed idealist, as well as Smith's continued transition from servant of the system to corruptor of the system.

I think the message of the first film is that we crave freedom, and that our choices can make us free. Reloaded lays out the opposing argument. Revolutions, I believe, will come to some sort of compromise between the two positions.

I would also remind you, Reloaded/Revolutions has been described as a four hour movie with a six month intermission. I think we need to see how it ends before we can fully judge what was done with the first half.

M1 brilliantly fused the oriental fighting style of film with a brutal western edge, the fights were dirty, messy, brutal affairs. M2 went far more for the overly stylised appearance of a typical chinese fight movie. They conveyed no sense of danger (compounded by other problems with the script).

Frankly, to find anything likeable about this film you seem to have to tie a bunch of potential script holes into a load of question about the next film, on it;s own it's jsut a badly directed, awfully acted, terribly written and horrendously editted mess.

What you knew as "Quicktime 4", "Quicktime 5", "Quicktime 6", are really different distributions of compression formats. The codecs we support are mainly uncompressed.

So, basically, you confuse two things that come under the same name. True, Quicktime is a player and API, and it's pretty much open. But there are the quicktime compression formats too (just like divx, mpeg or xvid which are yet another compression formats), which are decompressed using proprietary software only, and which could be decompressed using standarised codecs, to be played i.e. in WMO or The Playa, if just said codecs were written - and were legal to write.

      We are confusing several terms:
File format: Wrapper for some content. .avi, .mov, .rm... May contain data created using different compression methods.
Compression method: mpeg, mpeg2, divx, ogg vorbis, qt5, qt6... Data compressed using given method can be contained within certain file format (many different methods in 1 file format).
Codec: Standarised software layer (de)compressing specific compression format to standarised media player. Note, "standard" codecs for qt* as such are nonexistent. There are some highly proprietary codecs that come with QT package, and allow to play QT-compressed content (from .mov file format) to be played only in QT player (which is by no way "standard") and Apple doesn't seem to be willing to allow anyone to create anything more standarised, i.e. codec that would allow to play qt-compressed data in WMP.

I hope that clarifies the problem and shuts up those who insist QT is not a codec. By some means, it isn't. What people mean as QT codecs is some obscure software layer in official Apple QT player that does nearly but not quite what codecs should do and because of some dumb law regulations, can't be made into something a real codec should be.

So Mr. Anderson got it in the 6th version of the Matrix. Then "The One"
program's purpose is to allow Zion to be destroyed then to rebuild it. The
reason for this is because of anomalies - the 1% of humans that don't
accept the Matrix. These are all brought out of the Matrix program and into
the Zion program by the "Morpheus" program and other similar "ship captain"
programs. Then once all the anomalies are out of the Matrix (and in Zion),
that is the time for Zion to be destroyed, thus killing all the anomalies
off. The Matrix is then upgraded, thus creating the next version of the
Matrix, but Zion must be rebuilt so that the next lot of anomalies can be
brought out again so that they can be destroyed. This is the feedback-loop,
and is the reason to retain a handful of people so that Zion can be rebuilt.
So this is why Neo said the prophecy was a lie - the One's purpose was not
to end the war as the prophecy stated.
Unfortunately, "The One" program must be re-used each time, or copied, so it
can be "attached" to a new anomaly inside the Matrix. So what happens to
the old "The One" program? It faces deletion, and as the Oracle explained,
it goes into exile instead, just like the French bloke (the Merovingian)
did. He was the first One (probably from the second version of the Matrix),
and once he fulfilled his duty, he became an exile program and "abdicated"
his "Oneness" by choosing Persephone and power. This is evident in the bogs
when Persephone asks Neo to kiss her. She says she wants him to kiss her so
she can feel what it is like again to be kissed by something close to
human, just like the Merovingian used to be. Then she says to Trinity that
she envies her, but that these things are not meant to last. So the
Merovingian used to be just like Neo - a One - thus proving further the
    feedback-loop explained earlier.

The correct door in the Architect's room

Now there are two possibilities here:
    1. All the previous One's chose the right door allowing a "temporary
dissemination" of their code into the Matrix (i.e., the code they "carry"
thus indicating Neo is indeed human), then he must select (unplug) 23
people from the Matrix to rebuild Zion. This takes away the possibility
that stories from previous rebuilds of Zion will be carried through. But
Morpheus indicated in the first Matrix that this is the case anyway. He
said, "there was a man born inside, able to change things, it was he who
freed the first of us," - basically the One previous to Neo. And this
proves that the previous One chose the right door also. Neo's purpose is
also to choose the right door, but he does not because he faces deletion
afterwards and has the choice of going into exile - programs choosing to go
into exile is the one thing that can't be accounted for in program
parameters. Thus, he chooses the left door instead this time. How was Neo
able to choose the other door? Because of his extreme willpower? - Even the
Architect indicated that he'd noticed this - "Interesting. That was quicker
than the others." Or more likely, because the Oracle upgraded his coding
with the candy on the park bench. The candy/cookie was a method to change
the One's program. She said he has made a believer out of her - this is
quite human-like and perhaps the previous One's didn't accept the upgrade
candy, now she has hope... hope that Neo will finally choose the other
    door.

    2. All the previous One's chose the left door, saving Trinity and letting
Zion fall. So this time is

There's even a musical based on one of them, Peppin (I belive - I don't listen to musicals).

This isn't as important as the occult significance they have. Some claim that the Merovingian line is descended from Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. Jesus, after 'dying', merely had someone else crucified and then eloped and went into Europe.

Now, that Neo can be seen as a Jesus figure (whether normal Christianity or Gnosticism) is a pretty often argued argument. So the interpretation that the Merovingian is a Neo that decided to enjoy the pleasures of the Matrix instead of saving/unsaving humanity? They are given a finite amount of space to play in, a finite time to play, and strict rules to play by. In an ideal world they would be so oblivious to the actual rules that they just assume that's how reality works.

We do this now with daemons under Linux. My bind daemon runs as a special user named. Named has its own filesystem within a filesystem through the magic of CHROOT. CHROOT fools a process into thinking the origin of the universe exists at an arbitrary location of a larger filesystem, instead of at the convention I-Node 0.

When named runs, it can't see anything but what is below /var/bind. Indeed, it sees /var/bind as /.

This explains much of how he's able to interact with machines at the end of the Matrix 2 in an inhuman way.

I believe this is further evidenced by Agent Smith. He represents the same combination (conversion?) as Neo but from the evil perspective. Neo is becoming part machine but Smith, as machine, is being part human. Their conflict is between good and evil of a new race man/machine. In the trailer the Oracle says they he (they?) are stuck in a world between pure program and pure reality..once again a combination man/machine world.

The documentation is unfortunately very intimidating, so it makes it look like more of a hassle than it really is. Here are some tips for some of you that have difficulties with running MPlayer. These may help you get better output as well.

    A) Download these codec packs from the MPlayer codec site at
    http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codec s/

    "Latest Win32 codecpack"
    "QuickTime6 DLLs"
    "RealPlayer9 codecs (including RV40)"

    C) Build and install the player (after downloading the source, of course). ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gui
    make
    make install (as root)

    D) Run with one of the following:
mplayer -vo xv -ao sdl filename
mplayer -vo xv -ao oss filename
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa9 filename

Or as a last ditch effort...
    mplayer -vo x11 -ao esd
    mplayer -vo x11 -ao artsd

XV output is the best way to play back video. It's fast and it's pretty, but your card has to support it. Most chips that work under XF86 (outside of generic framebuffer mode) will work with this. X11 mode is a much slower fallback. There's an OpenGL option as well, which may work for some users.

Optionally, put the mplayer options in your .mplayer/config file and you won't have to enter the ao or vo stuff. For example...

    vo=xv
    ao=sdl

You can enable the GUI with:
    gui=yes

I prefer not using it though, as CPU load is increased quite a bit in many cases when using the GUI.

There are lots of extra options for stuff like 5.1 sound and other things, but these are the basics to get it working well.

Most DivX files use MP3 audio formats, but afaik this is not the only choice available at encoding. There is a video codec specifically for DivX, but it also functions as a container format.

MPEG-4 does have a container specification, but it also has a video and audio specification. When someone talks about "MPEG-4 video" they mean the video codec specified in the MPEG-4 standards document, not whatever video stream happens to be in an .mp4 file. So, no, it can't be Sorenson video.

The closest thing MPEG-4 has to an "MPEG-4 video" standard is MPEG-1/2 video codecs. It also has an additional specification for oddly-shaped streams, which is an extension of the MPEG-1/2 specification. Additionally, any other video codec that meets the specifications for bitrate and video quality can be used (which includes most Sorenson codecs, though the codec has to work with MPEG-4 in it's streamable format, which isn't always the case with Sorenson (which tends to be 'streaming', rather than 'streamable').

Same thing goes for audio. When someone talks about MPEG-4 audio, they mean AAC.

AAC is an MPEG-2 audio standard, and is listed as such in the MPEG-4 documentation. MPEG-4 audio can also be a generic instrument description and even text, similar to MIDI, or any other audio format that meets the specifications (for bitrate and sound quality).

Overall, MPEG-4 has 2 major parts: MPEG-4 Visual and MPEG-4 Audio. These parts are described in general terms with the MPEG-2 formats used as baselines, though there is additional functionality for things like text, still images, interactivity, and so on, all of which is still used in a container (the MPEG-4 file, I don't use the .mp4 extension in most cases because QT6 puts out .mp4 files that don't work with other MPEG-4 decoders).

First a theory, the large glowing conduits I would say are power lines to 01, the machine city, running from the matrix, which would likely not be in the same place. These lines I would assume carry power from the matrix where it is produced. The large spikey thing....I won't really speculate but the face that you see looks an awful lot like the face of the architect when you freezeframe.

In the background of that same scene, where the spiked object says, "Speak" you'll notice spires and towers, which I would assume are part of the machine city 01. Neo tells this construct that smith is out of their control, that they can't stop him, but neo can.

Next scene, agent smith and what one would assume to be other agent smith's climbing stairs, but perhaps NOT.

The rain, lots of smith's, neo, and smith.

Cut to what I assume to be the architect in machine form, asking neo, "and if you fail?". This face seems to look very similar to the face of the architect, but it is hard to tell, given that it's more like a mosaic.

Jump to next scene, what one would assume to be neo jumping to avoid smith who flies in through a hole in the wall, in a superman style.

Change to scene with neo wearing blindfold, sitting in a chair. Neo says, "I won't". Though with differing scene background, I wouldn't believe that the one with the machine construct is followed directly by this scene. Note the probe behind him, the one they use to jack in with....watch the way it moves, I don't believe this is held by a human, rather this is a part of a machine, perhaps neo is in the machine city jacking into the matrix? It doesn't move like a human was holding it, rather, it sways and then jabs itself forward, note the lack of human hand.

Change scene, trinity, asking, "Do you know what happened to neo?" We aren't shown who she's talking to, but because we hear the oracle's voice next, we assume the oracle. Neo is also shown opening his eyes.

Change seen once more, we see large floating machine constucts, unsure of what they might be, though I would assume guardians to the machine city, as you'll notice the assumed power lines below them.

Oracle tells the listener(we assume trinity) that neo is in a place between "THIS world"(note she says this rather than real) and the machine world. We would assume the oracle could not be in the real world, as she is a program, so if we want to assume neo is trapped between the real world and the matrix, we must assume the machine world is then the real world, controlled by machines. You'll notice trinity wearing her traditional matrix costume, which would imply she is in the matrix at that moment.

During the oracle speaking, we also see what appear to be large cylindrical towers in the distance, and on the ground, what appear to be the fields where humans are grown. This would appear to be supported by the machine on the right with the tubes seen in the first movie that plucked humans from the "trees" and used the tubes to transport them. I would assume the cylinders are where the humans are "stacked" in their pods.

Cut to Morpheus, Trinity, and what appears to be Seraph, though we are unsure as we never see his face entering what appears to be a club. The merovingian is speaking now. "Bring me the eyes of the oracle and I'll give you back your savior". Trinity and morpheus and what again, appears to be seraph are all seen holding guns to the people in the club.

Merovinigan still speaking, cut to scene in a subway station. A subway car is seen in the background. Note the guy who punches what is assumed to be neo. He was in "Enter the matrix" He said something to the order of "3 days and zion shall fall, that's the way it happened last time" It's the same guy. I believe he also had a cutscene in Reloaded.
