Thats not a bad idea... Hmmm come to think of it not having to look up the man page everytime would be nice. But then again, would take the mystery out of it:) Either way, i do agree with you about the fact that the first company to get an EaSy Linux will make a lot of money. I just want to able to be part of the IPO if there is one. Not sure about Corel, but what about their release ? They have not been able to overtake MSOffice, now i think they may be taking on all of windows on:)
For that matter, neither are many of the other things unixfolk take for granted. "grep" comes to mind real quick How can you take away grep ? Having small programs that do their job well, and can be mixed up with others are the basic philosophy of Unix's. Well thats what i have always been told:) But i do agree with you about the package management. And Kde does a decent job of it! you can go to a linuxberg site, and just rightclik to install a package using KPackage!
It would make some sense that the person who was doing the usability study was someone who did not know much about Linux, of for that matter comptuers!( There is a 450 P3, I think i saw one on Killerapp.com)
Anyway, the point being that Microsoft may just be doing some kind of internal study to see what the impact of having Gnome and Kde become stable is on their market..... users who just want something that works!
When i use StarOffice, i hate the feeling of being inside of windows with teh start button and all that!
But with the current trend in companies supporting LInux as they are, it is not something taht I would find difficult to believe! NO one can say that M$ is not shrewd in business.... we may not agree with their tactics but they do know how to survive... and IF linux is a "contender" they will deal with it.
I would like to know if anyone here has ever been able to get someone who does not care about linux to just use it as a simple OS. Not caring about most things other than the fact that they have to remember a password ? I am talking about only a NON_CS_PERSON_HOME_USER:)
Either way, i would like to know if M$ ppl. were able to play Quake3 on their machines? and if so what did they think:) Quake3 plays pretty well now and well even when it crashes, the worst thing is that you have to go to some other computer, telnet in and kill some processes:)
It would be funny to know that ppl. testing would go up to their SUPS. and say
"we like this.... it *really* is stable.. and KDE and GNOME rock the house:)"
well enough babble... better get back to algorithms (college work)
Yes and we ride camels to work, and get water from the well thats a few hours walk from the house! Maybe thats the reason so many SOUTH-ASIANS have done rather well in colleges and universities all over the world.
Math did not come from the United State..... Look up the word "ALGORITHM" which I hope you have heard off ?
You may also want to go back into the archives and look up some information about early Viruses that were made.. Specially ones that hit NASA in the early eighties I think:) Find the origin of its coders:)
then maybe you will have a clue. I am trying not to provide more flamebait... but this comment was just tooo much!
The article is like many others. I remember reading something about how Oracle was also porting their stuff over just to make sure that NT would not be the only OS that would have a Database on the PC servers! Granted, StarOffice is really not something that you would associate SUN MicroSystems with, its more of a M$ style package! But then you need to remember that even Silicon Graphics became SGI. It may just be that Sun now realizes that specializing in hardware and OS may not be the stratergy for the future (I kow Sun does a lot more). Besides I dont think that even Sun would be bold enough to "drop StarOffice" too fast. Granted its not a cash cow but hell they are giving themselves some breathing room. Last i checked Microsoft still could not compete with Solaris on *REAL* machines like the EU10K. So if they do have to compete with M$, they better get to that correct playing field!!! Home and Business users, and thats where StarOffice will come in, even if they get their Java clients figured out, more is always merrier!
Some of the media hype about M$ is a bit overdone, hell if you were as big as M$ is you would almost need to have that much competition. Its just that emotions run a lot higher when BillGates is the person on the other side. What LINUX needs now is apps. to get it accepted! If this does happen, there is NO WAY THAT Sun will pull out... Java Client or NOT!.
Microsoft claims that the case is hurting the consumers just as bad as it is hurting them. Given that M$ is the producer of the biggest OS in the market and also has applications such as M$Office and NT, how can the consumers not get hurt.... Its just a simple fact that when a company gets hit by costs, the costs have to be transferred down to the consumers. Now all this is simple economix. What i want to know is how come Sun/Sgi/Ibm/Apple dont pick up on these things and make some media noise on their own ? Its dirty tricks like these that upset most people more than the fact that WinXX crashes every few times:) Dont get me wrong, I am not saying that these companies should go down to that level of flinging dirt, but just some tastefull comments should not hurt them. dont get mad at Gates.... get his marketers:)
Today's midrange platforms is the high-end platforms of tomorrow. IRIX/MIPS will survive a couple of more years, but SGI's future platform is Linux on Intel.
LINUX ON INTEL... now i like linux as the next person. But you have got to be joking:) Linux is no where near the time that it can take on a platform such as IRIX/MIPS!
And intel can't in their wildest dreams have a system like the high end MIPS systems that SGI makes with 256-way processing power! Thats not something that you can make in a few years:)
I have used a few linux systems with different video cards. Running both XFree and Accel-X I am assuming you are under a budget and given that I would reccomend you look into going for the Matrox G200 (G400 if you can afford it) or some of the old Mellinium II cards. The Viper550 and some of the old NumberNine cards (FX 531) seems to do a great job for 2d at 1024x786. I am running Mandrake with SiS 6326 so i cant wait to get the new server to get some improvement! i dont recommend this card unless you are on a real tight budget. well thats my $.02 Check out some of the benchmarks at XIG AGP card Benchmarks
