    Its called the Network Effect.
    Lots of people using something increases the value of that good. Thats the only reason that x86 has survived for sooo long, and cause of its market penetration Intel/AMD are not about to switch to a new instr. set! Imagine people thinking about a new CPU might decide to look beyond xx86 and may go with something other than Intel/AMD!!!
    The same freaking reason with OS's!!! But i think Win2k HAS to be the answer!!! I mean with its memory footprint i think people may just try other alternatives (Be, FreeBSD, Linux)

    Well its good to see that x86 based processors have hit the 1GHz mark. Now i am no expert on CPU's when I did computer architecture we studied the MIPS architecture and it was pretty clean (the subset we studied) and small....

    I would like to know what the clocks on many of your boxes are like. I am pretty sure Sun does not sell their Eu10K's based on the MHz rating of their CPU;s. Also, how about some info on the SGI boxes and others ? ?

    Also I find it interesting how marketing has made the MHz mark so freaking important that people spend 100's of dollars to get an extra 50 Mhz and then go and get IDE drives!!!

    In parting I have to say that i have been a fan of AMD for sometime... cant wait till i start working so i can actually afford a K7! GO AMD!!!
    and kudos to the Engineers there to be able to keep the x86 arch. going... as i recall it was called the "Golden Handcuff..big money for backward compatability with a backward technology"

    Its all about the numbers now aint it!
    No one gives a damn about anything else! anymore anway. Slackware went to 7.0 (its my distro. of choice but still the move was uncalled for).
    Now with Mozilla going straight from 4.7 -> 6.0 and the new MSN being MSN 5.0 you just have to think about how important the damn numbers have become.
    Does anyone know of the marketing research that says this number game is important ? I would like to know of the percentage of computer users that base software on its version. Hmm figures that its for winblows users!

    I am not completely sure on the validity of this post! Not to say that I am an expert on the topic of programming languages, BUT :

    1. No pointers. It can't possibly be a programming language.
    Exactly what gave you this idea? If you have used languages such as Scheme or Lisp, you will appreciate the clean code that can be written without pointers! True, you would not go and write device drivers with Scheme, but the point of the matter is that a languages such as Scheme are REAL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES!! And if you ever used one you would know that the availability of pointers DOES NOT make a language!
    3. Strings are a class!!! ...
    Ok, now if you are thinking in the Object Oriented paradigm, it had better be a class, much like integers and everything else. I mean did you even learn about the idea behind the paradigm ? ? Its interesting that you seem to see making integers as OBJECTS to be "evil"!!

    All in all, you need to understand that C/C++ and Pascal DONT describe what a language should be (which is the view I am getting from your post! )

    ALSo, please moderators this post really IS NOT interesting/informative or anything. If at all it should be in the category :

    When working on database stuff, and coding you mostly dont ever really need anything more that window management! I enjoy not having to point and click thank you very much!!!

    Now for that you can use X-/ emacs to do almost anything!! Split things into windows and you are set! you have termials, editing windows, or even webpages :)

    what more can you ask for..... it really is a pain to have to use the mouse to switch windows, and most WM's are not able to make screen splits like emacs... now i know this will not be practical for most ppl, and if VI can do it.. GOOD!!! all i am saying is that if your work involves writing ESQl/Perl/C++/HTML or something like that Emacs will work just fine! I loved using it on a primarily CDE box all summer!!!

    "technical measures" if taken so that only a certain group of ppl. can still enjoy the product are crap! they dont deserve to remain and its just plain econ. that if there is a strong enough demand the supply will come! The measures will be broken if the price is right!!!

    Also, this is first time i have read an article that refers to linux as a "trendy" free-OS :)

    Well i (like many of /. readers) have stayed awake through a bit of Psych. and all i can remember is that its a mix of the two!!

    If we take a "naturally gifted" person and well just let them be, they will be smart, but that dont mean they will get anywhere!
    A hardworking, avg. individual, on the other hand can get pretty far by just trying hard enough, given that he/she is not completely brain dead!

    I have seen a lot of very very smart ppl. who would like nothing more than to play on some MUD all day and well really not give a crap about what they could be achieving! And then again the same ppl. had the ability to pick up things (algorithms and math. proofs in this case) faster than anyone else!!

    I think the brain is like any other muscle in the body!!! you use it and you can keep it in shape and actually get somethhing out of it! then again you could have the best brain and well never do anything with it! (i.e. become a marketer :))
    But you still have to start off somewhere!!!! starting higher just means you can improve faster!!!

    it does sound a bit cliche but the idea of nature or nurture being black and white just does not seem completely satisfying. (Hey we avg. ppl need a chance you know... and well the natural ones do have an edge :))

    Never used an IRIX box... so how is the X-server on those things! I mean i like XFree a lot and I think that they are doing a great job with it. And i cant wait till 4.0 comes out! My question is that isthere a way that SGI could bring their "knowledge" i.e. code for an X-server to help us to ? ?

    Hmmm this looks cool!!!! two years back I was hunting about for stuff that would be cool to run on my puny box!!! Now i am trying to weed out the
    GOOD software that I can run!!!

    SGI if only someone there would realize that Silicon Graphics was a cooler name!!

    OpenSource is the way to go SGI... charge for Support.
    Training. !!!
    Documentation.
    Consulting (MONEY ppl)
    And ohhh.... clothing! :)

    And i think that the current direction that SGI has taken is going good. Just hope they can keep it up!!!!!

    I can completely understand what you are going through. Back when i did not have a computer, I would have to go to a friends house to use his 386 to get on the local BBS. AT that time there was no such thing as an ISP at home (pakistan).
    BBS was the only way your computer could connect with others to get files, games and get to share ideas with other computer ppl.
    Even when ISP's came about, BBS was the best way to "stay in touch". And of course the fact that an ISP cost an arm and a leg was also a problem.

    I think one of the reasons that people dont want that exp. is that there are soo many choices that you just do whatyou want. There are still places where ppl. share ideas (Slashdot, irc etc)
    and play games on web pages and all that. Just that they are all different! It would be cool to have a completely INTERCONNECTED set of webpages that allow you to chat, run a "who" command or just post stuff (who cares what) on some b-board!!!

    well if there is such a place... point me to the right direction!!!

    Until recently I thought that just keeping up to date with patches on linux would be enough! NO WAY !

    Whatever you do, setup a firewall. I am currently working on setting up OpenBSD on a machine to run as a firewall.... and if you are going to run a business, i would recommend that you keep funds aside for a firewall and work on security.
    On that end i would think that having a database on a different server would be nice. Preferably one that does NOT have a direct connection to the internet!!! (Hmm maybe it could be hooked up via the NEW USB standard :)

    Also, make the website that works well and dont PUT TOO MUCH into it. I think a lot of ppl. get annoyed when you can see 6 guzillion things and still can't navigate!

    :Lastly, try and get your website to be featured somehow onto /. and pray that your setup survives!

    I do believe reading a while ago about a group in England that gave their customers the ability to choose the songs that would go onto a CD.

    Also, a while back when MP3's were still pretty new I remember seeing some nice websites where you could ask the person to put up some of his/her mp3's from a list that they provided! Its almost the same concept now with some places and their realaudio feeds!

    Having the ability to customize what you want to listen to is not a new concept and i think that it is crap that cdnow would even think of this! and all the jokes aside, this idea of patenting everthing just CANNOT be good for the market!

    hell, even microsoft did not try to patent (IN MY KNOWlEDGE) stuff so stupid!!! Hehehe, we all know that the little paperclip with M$OFFICE is a _NEW_ concept for the world to enjoy!

    It seems that no matter what a computer person may say the real decision will finally come from the management! This may be a point to debate on but i am sure that most people will agree that the management still has some control over software to be used. Hencs, by having Compaq support Linux the way they are is a good thing!!!

    BUT.... i would like to know from you all *exactly* how much control does managment have ?
    Cause all Compaq is doing is selling linux to the suits... or at least thats what i see!

    The new trend seems to definately be that you start it off and let the open-source community do the work of improving the software!
    I cant complain/ Now i can go ahead and get a SBLIVE and a DVD drive! This trend towards supporting linux is just awesome@ I remember that a few years ago i had so much trouble getting hardware that was supported!

    The business side of this is also interesting, i mean you get more users since most linux ppl. will have few choices (this is sadly still true) and well *NERDS* always are the opinion leaders!
    Get them to use your prodct and the regular users who always ask the *nerds* will end up coming to your product for certain!
    Heck if it helps us, and it helps them... why not!

    What are you talking about! i am a Linux fan, but realize that Linux is not even close to coming near some OS's like IRIX and Solaris!


    SlOW SPEEDS LIKE 400MHZ!! I am guessing you have learnt your computers from the corner store of the latest version of computer gamer! I would recommend reading a book on computer architecture! Learn about the difference between clock speeds and how much use is made out of them! Heck man intel has had a rough time getting a 64 Platform!! I wonder why ?

    SGI, Sun and IBM (they still make some monster machines) have some of the fattest machines! I mean for them to have a few Gigs of Memory and butt load of processors is common!

    Finally....... but pathetic poor performing unscalable machines form sun and sgi
    What are you talking about.... adding a new graphic card or sound card is not what constitutes scalability! Look at some of the SGI;s, hell you can just drop in a few more processors when you feel like it! And where can i find a motherboard that will allow 64 processors ? IBM, SUN, HP and SGI all have em! Hmmm but they are not used for games!

    sun/sgi/hp will be out of business within a year, they just cannot compete with such superior technology.

    I will not even comment about this! i mean you just have to be out of it to make such a statement! please if you dont know what you are talking about dont say anything..... its a shame that you have the .sig that you do!

    and hence you try to use SCSI with the more demanding systems! try to reduce the CPU usage!
    I just find it funny that ppl. will have a PIII with a old IDE drive running at 5400Rpm and having a nice 128K cache!
    Ohh but i forgot, its the CPU that matters for everything!
    I would hope that the HIGH end system from Gateway anmd others would have started using SCSI by now... but hey, its just the clock speed that matters! And lets not even talk about RAM, how in the earth can you justify having a K7 with 64 Megs of RAM!

    When i first started with linux sometime ago, Slackware was the only choice to go with! Then it seemed that Redhat was the one the only!

    as a newbie this stuff is really useful cause it lets you see up front what you are getting into! A lot of ppl will see this and be a bit more confident to go with one distro. or the other! Who cares which one they go for as long as they make the first step to try out Linux! then they have a chance to get hooked and soon they will be making decisions based on their own.!


    An operating system for most people is not a very simple product to decide on. Whatever we say, it is a big change and there are a lot of ppl. who will stay with the devil they know, than switch to the devil they dont. With all the media coverage, i still dont see reviews too much, which would in my mind be interesting for newbies and others alike!

    Of course knowing how some Linux users are, we are going to be having a war about how inadequate some features of redhat/openlinux are! But i dont think that should be considered since most ppl. on /. are probably seasoned linux users! They can decide on their own (and probably add/remove features on their own!)

    and yes i know that there are different journal filesystems available, but which ones are being used by a distribution ? I was talking about using a stock install with ext2.

    I have been a linux user for a long time myself, and my first machine with linux was a college lab computer that we made to dual boot! A 486 with 8 Megs of RAM! but i took longer than 45 seconds to boot!!!!

    Either way, chill out, i am sure a stock install off linux with a HUGE file system will die too!

    These contests are kinda going a bit far if you ask me. What do you really see from looking at reboot times ? Heck its NT!

    lets talk kernel compile times !!! flags used ? ?
    I am sorry, but reboot times for NT is just something that tells you nothing! Hell Linux would be BAD as hell on this one tooo... imagine having a VERY VERY large filesystem! well that is one place where linux is not too strong!!!

    Hmm i guess Sony does not want to go with the good old "economies of scale" approach! Guess that would just not make sense!!!!

    well at that price i can just maybe hope to see one.... much less own one! Hey maybe someone will reverse engineer the technology, change it to get away with patent problems and mass-produce! and have the code be open-source of course!

    I cant wait till we can get these kind of things with lego parts! the possibilities would be endless! childhood here i come!!!

    pictures look interesting to say the least! But i would be really interested in knowing how they were implementing the GA. As in how was each generation chosen, mutations, and matching up!

    for someone who does not know much about where GAs are being used... are there any REAL_World applications that use them. I know that some while ago there was a database engine that was trying to use a form of neural nets! Could it be
    po9siible to use some GAs to build data miners ?
    Interesting things too come.... but now i return to working on algorithms (HW) :)

    They use 128Megs of RAM, and an EIDE drive ?

    Am i missing something here or has INTEL marketing done such a good job that people who should be thinking of ways to improve performance in other ways are just taking part in the rat race for more clocks ? ?

    EIDE, now thats something that i find funny, if you are going to do soooo much to a system, at least have the decency to put in a nice Ultra2Wide drive in there. I dont care what numbers say, SCSI still makes a lot of difference!
    Secondly, how about some more memory please ? ?

    then comes the question that is it really worth the darn hastle ? things going to be slow in a few months anyway, why waste money on a few clocks if you can spend it wisely on otherthings ?

    Dont get me wrong, in practice its cool to see what a processor can push, but we have seen it too many times. Its bad enough that all the marketing hype is about "xxxMhz".... sure, lets put a 600Mhz, Celery, with slow RAM, a crapy vdo card, slow Drive, and call it top of the line!

    On most things a system with well chosen components will outperform (in the real world) one that has just a faster processor!!! why we keep getting these "supercool" things is a mystery to me.....

    I am not trying to start a war here, i am just saying that maybe articles like this should include a fair warning to users about alternatives to FASTER processors!

    I am not sure what you all are saying. Why just yesterday I heard from a "big-wig" who works at some consulting firm in Boston that NT had in fact beaten the crap out of linux. "Why Linux got cracked at PCsomething.... NT din't".


    ^^^^ Hmm sad thing is that this is the kind of person who will be controlling where the money gets spent, and even worse will be the type i have to interview with in less than a year! Arrggh.

    The reasoning at the top level of management is still what we get taught at college! The good old phrase every Economics/Business major has heard a lot " There is nothing like a free lunch "

    This is where articles like this come about, i have never heard of any business person check out a proper article on OS's. They like to read things on CNN, and ZDnet UNIX'S ARE NOT DEAD TILL THE MEDIA SAYS SO!
