  1. Re:The company's position on Security Researcher Faces Jail For Finding Bugs · · Score: 1
What I find very interesting here is that they are claiming that they are suing him because his false statements are hurting their business and their reputation.

Yet, if his accusations were false, they could easily go after him for slander/libel. But they are not. They are using IP laws to club the researcher, rather than trying to get a judgement that his accusations are wrong.

This seems highly suspicious to me. They say he is lying about their security holes, and yet they don't want a judgement on that basis.

did I say that copyright did any such thing? On what planet are you "insightful" for such a retort?

His comment is insightful. Yours is bordering Offtopic.

He is referring to something commonly known as fair use. A critic can play a few seconds of a movie or song, or quote an excerpt from a book or magazine, in order to make a point about it. You keep comparing that to buying a CD and giving what is known as a public performance from it. They are two entirely different things.

As for the license agreement, that is also an entirely different topic that has been debated here tirelessly, and has nothing to do with your radio station analogy.

Wow - this is the first time I ever heard anyone say that conservative/republican voters were out to get more welfare. If the red-staters are such awful aid leeches, why do they vote for politicians that want to cut social programs and aid? And if the blue-staters are getting ripped off by these "leeches", why do they vote for politicians that want more aid programs? By your own logic, you ought to vote conservative too, and hope the "red-staters" get their to "do those things themselves". Apparently they want to.

Let me add one to your seried of events: #0 Asshole lops you on the head and takes your gun instead of your PDA. #0.1 Asshole sees you put up a fight and shoots you. The first rule of being street-smart is realizing that carrying a weapon merely puts a weapon into play.

Moronic. I've heard this a dozen times from people who are against gun use, but never once from anyone who actually knows anything about guns (or street fighting, for that matter). I wouldn't take any "rules of being street smart" from someone who takes this scenario seriously. He gets his street-smarts from the movies.

In a robbery type situation, the "asshole" is just looking to get some easy money. If he sees you pull out a gun, he's not going to fight you for it Bruce Lee style - he's going to cut and run. Even armed assailants normally don't hang around and play gunfight.

As soon as the gun comes into play, everyone gets a reality check and instinctively tries to get away from the situation alive.

I've carried (legally licensed) for 10 years. Thankfully, I've never had to shoot. But I have diffused two situations by drawing the weapon. And I can tell you that neither of the men who came after me had any notion of "lopping" me on the head and taking my gun. The gun came out, everyone scattered, end of problem.

Let me add one more thing - It's not "fun" like the movies. It's a absolute last resort.

    > Accept that your computer is bound by FCC regulations...

Only to the extent that your computer emits RF interference, and/or communicates over phone lines. You're confusing the issue.

There's an FCC ID on almost all electronic equipment. Does that mean the FCC can regulate what bread you put in your toaster? What food you heat in your microwave? Can the FCC tell you you cannot record a phone message on your answering machine? or what you can do with that recording?

The FCC regulates the physical transmission of information, and to some extent the content in the case of public transmissions. Once you receive the transmission, its out of their hands.

  6. Red Hat not ready for the desktop on Red Hat's CEO Suggests Windows For Home Users · · Score: 1

I agree that Red Hat is not ready for the desktop. I gave up on them around 7.0. OTOH, SUSE 9 IS!. I installed it on my laptop this weekend. It detected and set up all my hardware -even winmodem and P4 SpeedStep support out of the box! Impressive! For some time now, I've enjoyed watching SUSE get better and better. I've paid for 5 versions of the OS so far (putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak). I just hope Novell doesn't go and cock it up!
