Neither can I say I agree that keeping the source on a seperate network is taking great lengths, especially not compared to using the extra resources for an IT department requires and trusting it to do it's job. Keeping the source seperate is simple and foolproof solution to the threat of attack from the web. It's one less thing to worry about.
they stored the source on a computer connected to the internet in the first place, and further, I don't see why they didn't take it off once they noted the suspicious activity...
...now my new computer is gonna be a waste of money for the next 1/2 year :(
