Perhapps recent intelectual property protection process and corporate patent practices have served to stifle creativity or at least the promise of potential benefit for most individuals with a spirit of inginuity.

The Red Flag rule had the effect of requiring any company that provided product or services before payment was billed, had to comply with non-trivial requirements for protection, detection and reporting. If the lawn mowing service billed you, they had to meet Red Flag rules.

  4. Re:I agree with half of his reasoning. on New President for OLPC Organization · · Score: 1

Is the OLPC managing a marketing strategy or developing a humanitarian effort? Not an original strategy; "OLPC was founded in 2005, with the aim of improving education in poor countries by putting cheap, rugged, low-power laptops in the hands of schoolchildren." Apple tried to do the same in US schools.

Kane seems a lackey for Industry. But the true aim would be best served by Open Source, if afford ability let along long term supportability, is a concern.

Untitled Document The most concise intelligent response I've read here yet on this subject.

Plenty of options available Antivir, Panda, even AVG to name a few. I would not use Mcafee either. I tell all my client and people I know to get Symantec, especially Norton, off of their machine pronto. You are better off without it. the rules are a bit different in an enterprise, but the home use would be better off with nothing (no antivirus software) than with Norton.

Norton because it is the default OEM AV on M$ it is a target. Symantec sells junk because it can do that, well.

Get your money back on it fast and talk to somebody else about your AV solution.

  10. What is wrong with IT? May be systemic. on Sharing IT Problems with Executives? · · Score: 1

What is wrong with IT? May be systemic.
This event may have two agendas:
1.) To pacify and identify dissention (troublemakers) within the staff - Moral boost strategy.
2.) To identify and prioritize issues which are causing problems for the execs.

Be assured it will likely be both. I speak from experience; having been a part of a few of these sessions, I have found it can be an opportunity for those courageous enough to stand for those issues which offer a genuine solution to the problems of the executives.
Often the issues are centered on the inability for the executives to provide quality IT services to the business at a justifiable cost.
This is a complex issue. Fundamentally it has to do with a lot of different factors; communication, process control, modeling and understanding of infrastructure, moral, culture, justification of changes or projects, and many more.
A suggestion of looking at IT departmental problems from a systemic viewpoint and attempting to view and deal with those issues on a holistic standpoint can change a conversation focused on many problems to one vision for the department which is aligned to provide quality IT products and support to the business.
"How do we work together better to do the job we all want to do?" - Asking this question can have excellent although slow results. The answers will come and nobody will be sore for the asking.
