  1. A clear case of US double morale? on Teacher Found Guilty of Endangering Kids Due to Spyware · · Score: 5, Insightful

I get so fed up with the duality of American society where, on the one hand you are so exceptionally uptight when it comes to nudity, tolerance of other peoples sexuality etc - and on the other hand you are the worlds largest producer & market for pornography.

This leads to sad, sad examples like this where Prosecutors need to find a guilty party or person at any cost to pin the blame on for having some kids unintentionally see some porn pop-ups. I feel really, really sorry for the poor teacher for getting caught in this mess.

Its tragicomic for us living outside your country watching this - I sincerely hope you are able to fix these issues in a fundamental way.

  2. Jeez... on Cell Numbers To Be Added To 411 · · Score: 1
As a Norwegian, I'm used to (and very comfortable with) having cell numbers available through our local directory service, since we've had that access for years. Heck, I don't even have a POTS phone number anymore - my cell delivers all I need.

Most Norwegian Cell numbers are available at Telefonkatalogen, and I don't think it compromises my privacy.

    Norwegian for "password" is "passord".

I wonder if they've tried that already...

  4. Re:Technology? on Gnome 1.2.0 Released · · Score: 2

This release introduces gdkpixbuf witch add alpha-transparency to the panel, and there is other small panel fixes like the panel is now resizable.

Gnome Print went into this release.

And finally with GTk--1.2.x and Gnome-- 1.1.x GNOME finally has a good C++ toolkit.

On the usability front the replacement of Enlightenment with Sawmill creates a more integrated non-duplicating environment.

  5. Re:Hardly revolutionary on Gnome 1.2.0 Released · · Score: 1

Well, you could use the GNOME development framework with WindowMaker and skip GNOME the desktop, that would give you a different type of desktop.

Another alterntive is mixing GNOME and Englightenment also there skipping the panel.

Of course they are all more or less the same. I think it will be hard to truly do something different until technology which makes a immersive 3D environmet possible.

  6. Re:KDE? on Gnome 1.2.0 Released · · Score: 1

Much of GNOME 1.0 was way ahead of KDE 1.1.2, with things like ORBit and the panel. themeing etc.
So this is more like leaping further ahead when it comes to technology and catching up when it comes to maturity and width of applications.

Please check the facts about Oracle Application Server before you state that 'it was so good that Oracle stopped using it for their own site'.

A simple HEAD request to www.oracle.com gives:

    HEAD http://www.oracle.com/ HTTP/1.0

    HTTP/1.0 200 OK

  8. Pro/Engineer - and I-DEAS as well on GPL CAD to Linux · · Score: 1

I think you hit the spot when you say that the biggest obstacle to getting high-end CAE systems like ProE and I-DEAS is the lack of good 3D-drivers.

I have been an admin for I-DEAS on both Irix and NT for the last two years, and I have longed for the days when there will be support for CAE-systems on Linux. Heck, they were originally coded for Unix-systems, how hard can it be to port the code to Linux ? I guess this issue is closely related to the fact that CAE-systems mainly use OpenGL for displaying graphics, and that has been one of the week spots of Linux as of yet. I hope that will change since SGI has made OpenGL OSS.
