I've been an avid cryptome reader for some time, even to the extent that I followed most of the USA-vs-UBL trial transcripts - that was a great effort on your behalf.

My question is - do you think that you will be in a position to publish the transcripts for the trial of the Sept.11 events ?

Assuming, of course, that at least some of the perpetrators are brought to trial and that this will probably be well into the future.

You've just gotta take this sort of thing with a grain of salt.

Remember when Win95 came out with MSN access loaded and all you had to do was click on the MSN icon to get onto the "Internet" ? Remember all of the doom-and-gloom analysts predicting that Microsoft would take over the Internet because of this ?

Well, look around you. Microsoft hasn't taken over the Internet, and the fact they haven't probably means that they can't.

For any technology to be successful, it obviously has to be well designed - but most impotrantly ther has to be a demand for that technology. As far as I can see - the demand for .NET and PASSPORT is rather small at the moment.

You can't start a pervasive market by hype alone.

802.11x hardware is gonna be real cheap now. If you're in the situation where you're not worried about people snooping your traffic then this could soon become a real cheap network solution - particularly with all of these paranoid companies throwing their 802.11x cards out in the rubbish.

    Which government ?

Frankly, the US government can pass legislation until it is blue in the face, it won't make any difference to how the rest of the world is using strong crypto.

Some of the worlds best crypto was developed in Europe ( Germany, Finland, etc ) and released as freeware. It is unlikely that any US legislation will have any affect on the development and circulation of these systems.

Personally, I think the best platform is still Apple's MessagePad 2000 and 2100 ( also commonly referred to as the Newtone ). What a wonderful Linux platform this would have made.

With 8Mb of ROM, 4MB DRAM, and 4MB Flash, 16-shade 5 by 3 inch display, not to mention the two Type-II PCMCIA slots for more memory, modems, or ethernet cards.

Although not pocket size, I'm sure there is a very good market for this sort of thing right now. Too bad Apple killed it off in Feb '98.
