You get my point, but you defend credit cards because you seem to be able to handle them. The fact is most people can't. And I still contend that you are spending more than you would if you paid cash.
As far as the pin stealing thing, you get your money back. Same as a credit card. You go through the same process as if someone stole your credit card.
Personal finance is 80% behavior.
Call it names all you want. My guess is you are probably spending 12-18% more in your purchases than you would with cash. You don't feel the pain when you make that Credit Card purchase. You will feel it more if you use a debit card, and you will feel it completely when you use cash. Personal Finance is 80% mental.
The fact is most American families are drowning in Debt. Mortgages that they can't afford are a big part of the problem, the rest of the problem is credit card debt.
You think those Credit Card Companies have those big buildings because they are just making money off of the skim of the purchases? The high fees, the games with interest, the low easy payments are all part of the game. They are very good at their game, and if you play their game, you will eventually lose.

The Truth About Credit Card Debt
Myth: Aren't there positive uses of a credit card? Like rebates and airline miles?
Truth: Responsible use of a credit card does not exist. Credit card debt is a major problem in America.
There is NO positive side to credit card use. You will spend more if you use credit cards. Even by paying the bills on time, you are not beating the system! But most families don't pay on time. The average family today carries $8,000 in credit card debt according to the American Bankers' Association.
credit cards, credit card debtNow let's talk about the rebates. If you were using a credit card at 5%, you would have had to have spent $80,000 to get $4,000 rebates on new cars that lost $6,000 of value when you drove them off the lot. That is not a good deal!
Cash vs. Credit Cards
When you pay cash, you can "feel" the money leaving you. This is not true with credit cards. Flipping a credit card up on a counter registers nothing emotionally. If you use credit cards instead of cash you will spend 12-18% more. This is money you could have saved.
If you "have to" use plastic, I suggest a debit card. I use them for travel and the occasional convenience of ordering something over the Internet or phone. Other than that, I use cash.
Personal finance is 80% behavior. You need to cut out habits that make you spend more. You do not build wealth with credit cards. Use common sense. When you play with a multi-billion dollar industry and you think you're going to win at their game, you are naive. You cannot beat the credit card companies.
Would you take that bread board to the airport strapped to your chest?
How about walking around with a carving of a Glock 40. That is art too.
There are reasonable things to do. And then there are things to do just to cause a stir. This person knew that she was going to cause a stir. So she did it. Because she could. Because she was trying to prove some point. She was trying to get some attention. And honestly, I'm tired of our world being dominated by the vocal minority.
I'm really sick and tired of reading on Slashdot about things that are not, "News for Nerds, Stuff that matters."
Lets face it, it someone who WANTED to be arrested. WANTED to bring attention. But all of the Orwellians will jump on the bandwagon and say that we live in a police state.
They are also assuming that anyone who goes to Torrent Spy's web site is also downloading copyrighted materials. Just because I go to Torrent Spy doesn't mean that I am not downloading something legal.
RTFA,
"RAM is the working storage of a computer and designed to be impermanent," McCarron said. "Potentially your RAM is being modified up to several billions of times a second. The judge's order simply reveals to me a lack of technical understanding."
The Judge wants a log of what was in RAM. Just nuts. There isn't enough storage in the world to save every state change of RAM in one of these huge servers for more than a few days.
The hell with privacy. I think this ruling can single handedly destroy the technology industry making the price to run a single server astronomical.
This actually happens all the time with Secure IDs. Usually if the wrong number is used too many times, much like a locked password. It also can happen because of timing issues with the server and the ID.

Myth: Debt is a tool and should be used to help create prosperity.
Truth: Debt is not a tool; it is a method to make banks wealthy, not you.
Debt is dumb. Most normal people are just plain broke because they are in debt up to their eyeballs with no hope of help. If you're in debt then you're a slave, in the sense that you do not have the freedom to use your money to help change your family tree. According to a recent USA Today article about debt, 78 percent of baby boomers have mortgage debt, 59 percent have credit card debt, 56 percent have car payments.
You ever call a help desk to get your RSA Secure ID token reset? Doesn't take long. I'm sure they could do some sort of automated solution over the phone to do this. Wait for your number to cycle and then say your number. Then it syncs.
Who cares if you need your headlights on to get to work? Your not using any more energy. You car engine is not using up more gas because the alternator needs to produce more electricity to produce the electricity for those lights.
Do you work outside? The lights are still on in the office building, regardless of the amount of light outside.
Yes, you get to drive home in the light just like you did last week. But when you get home, you have more light to go outside and enjoy, instead of sitting in front of the computer like you did all day at your job.
I love Day light savings time. I don't even mind the lost hour of sleep. I honestly prefer to drive in the dark anyway.
The issue is not to find a replacement for exchange, it is to find an easy transition from Exchange to something else.
You can't just expect a company to decide to scrap exchange for something else. If you want to get a corporation that has 100's of desktops running MS Outlook you need a client of Exchange for those few Linux desktops. Once you have that then you can start to migrate users to Linux. Once you are all Linux, you can then swap out your Outlook with something else.
Another issue that I also see right now, is a lot of corporate internal web applications being written specifically for IE. There is no alternative if you want to view these applications on Linux or Solaris.

The Cingular PDA Data plan is $44.99 a month for unlimited. Cheapest is 5 MB for 19.99.
I wonder how Cingular will be working the plan fees for the iPhone.
When is the NSA gonna help with Red Hat, Mandrake or Mac OS?
I must say that this is totally off the board. MS should be paying the NSA to help with this. They should be footing the bill!
I loved DikuMUD. It is amazing how close the whole Everquest stuff was just like it. Complete with the healer room that would randomly cast spells on those that are sitting in the room.
DikuMUD was also my first practical introduction to System Programing. A lot to be learned about making modifications to the game's source, understanding Ports and processes, etc.
Joe
I use both.
I use a local email client that uses POP3 and SMTP with GMail. I have all of my mail still on GMail, and I also have it locally.
Sometimes it is nice to be able to google my email when I have searches to make. But I much prefer to use an email client and have all of my email available to me offline.

The technology for Cell Phone Tower triangulation already exists. More than likely that is what this technology is using. (Unless they are actually using a GPS, which I doubt.)
I definatly see it for something to use with those kiddy cell phones.
Lets also not forget about those of us that do any kind of multi-tier development. I run the following while doing my development:
1) Eclipse
2) WebLogic
3) Apache
4) MQ
5) Outlook
6) Trillian
7) Music Match
8) FireFox
I would love to run more. Like Oracle. I can't however because my 3 GHz machine just can't handle the load.
Joe
What about the sites that have been truley "slashdotted"? Meaning they actually had problems because of the unexpected overload of traffic caused by a slash dot link? You didn't review those. So I guess your whole post was pointless.
Come on, remove the damn link! Every hit counts!
Joe
I am involved in a very large project that has been going on for about 3 years now. Early in the project they decided to go with IFrames. The end result is the application just will not work with Mozilla. It sucks, because I adminster WebLogic using Mozilla, but I have to hop over to IE to hit the application.
I would love to see IFrame support for Mozilla. (Even if it is a MS crap.)
So the email server that sent the email is required to ensure that it actually not spam. And this is evil?
I get almost no spam in my Gmail account. I love it. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!
I get atleast 30 emails a day of spam to my company's email account. Hate it, hate it, hate it.
Sorry,
The worst ever movie to protray technology was "The Net" with Sandra Bollock. Completely aweful. The whole, click Pie sign while holding down control or something stupid like that.
Just aweful.
