"hundreds of mailing lists on ICQ and Hotline" Excuse me? ICQ and Hotline don't have mailing lists. And I've never seen one HL server pertaining to Blair Witch. Why is it that Katz feels he has to mention ICQ and Hotline in every aricle?
While other scinentific fields are attempting to constuct large databases of research, the Human Genome Project has been gigabytes of it's findings for years. I suggest to anyone that has any intrest in looking at data way over thier head look for this database and browse through it. It has all the codeons found to date, and is completely cross-refrenced. Very cool. If there we to be a repository of published sci papers, this would be the way to do it.
I have to admit, I don't like Jon Katz writing. It's usually bloated, and popus. But his last article really struck a chord with me.
I myself tried to go to the South Park movie last week. I'm two months from being 17. I bought the tickets via MovieFone and picked them up without a problem. But when I went to enter the movie the 45-year old female ticket taker decided that I couldn't go in.
? "You have to be 17 or be accompanied by an adult at all times."
Yeah, whatever. If I'm old enough to drive, I should be old enough to go into an R movie. Ultimately I had to say I was going in with some random 19-year-old behind me. He didn't seem to care about being responsible for us.
You're right, the media coverage is absurd, and when it comes down to it, it was his fault. Not much of a tragety there.
As for the goverment support, you're right again. I've NEVER seen a search and rescue opearion that lasted a FULL day past the known maximum someone could have stayed in the water. The retreval may be standard, but I don't think it usually entails calling in a Navy ship. I think any other pilot wouldn't be recovered.
Probally because the only monolithic kernels on that support Mac hardware are LinuxPPC/NetBSD/OpenBSD.
