The reality is FAR from that. Here in Buffalo we have a coal fired power plant that produces large amount of power for the area. (No, we don't get most of our power from Hydro, most of that is sent all the way across the state to New York City.)
I have been into this plant and seen how it works. Much like Nuclear, the coal is used to generate Steam which is used to turn turbines. However, the efficiency is MUCH higher because of how they burn the coal. Essentially, the coal is pulverized into a powder somewhat finer than talcum powder. it is dried with hot air (about 650 F) and then blown with even hotter air out of a compression nozzle into the firing area of the boiler. The pressure from the nozzle heats the powered coal and air to the ignition point and you get a blowtorch of incinerating coal dust and air blasting out of the end.
Not only does this create tremendous amounts of heat (which is used to generate steam, like a Nuclear power plant) but it much more thoroughly burns the coal, (something like 70-80% burned) leaving just a tiny fraction of ash left, which is removed from the exhaust air by scrubbers. Modern coal fired plants produce ALMOST NO airborne waste, and contribute far less to air pollution than diesel plants of similar generation capacity. They also produce no radioactive waste, so the lasting environmental effects are minimal.
That said, Nuclear is STILL the preferred solution, but Big Government Eco-Commie-Utopianists are once again getting in the way with their fantasy desire to have 0% impact ever on anything, but still somehow have a modern society.

Except that you have just defined an artificial barrier. The Monopolies on wireless spectrum are hardly needed. There is more than enough bandwidth within (for example) the 1.3ghz spectrum to allow for multiple channels over which wireless companies could operate. There is no need to lock out entire bands for a company that uses a fraction of that bandwidth.
Far better to use a single band for ALL cell communication and an encryption key standard that allows towers to communicate with any handset that performs the correct handshake. Combined with FHSS technology dropped calls would be a thing of the past, and we would free up massive piles of spectrum for public use.
(Also, if the 1.3 ghz band is not wide enough, there is plenty of room in the 2.7 and 3.7 ghz bands)
There is just no reason anymore to block out massive hunks of bandwidth. There should be ONE pool of bandwidth that can be used by ANYONE who wants to start a cell company. Make it rather wide if you must, but just one band. Just have a solid and extensible standard to follow and referee companies that use it so there are no abusers.

This Oculus device promises much more, but even if they only accomplish half of what they want they will still have an impressive device.

Of course, there is still the pilot onboard to correct ftc errors (if noticed) and there is always the Automatic direction finder (ADF), inertial navigation, compasses, radar navigation, VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) and GNSS. So it's not as though the pilots are at a loss for ways to find the correct airport. But still, with a compromised ATC system, you would have an increasingly dangerous situation, particularly near airports and on the ground. Runway collisions become ever more likely the longer a compromise situation exists.
Makes me glad I've given up flying (until the TSA is disbanded, anyway) if the FAA is this incompetent when picking such crucial systems. (This is, of course, the fatal flaw of top-down "command" style government systems. If the people managing the system are incompetent, then the whole system collapses. And the chances for incompetent management are always equal to one.)

It's not as though that's an unheard-of thing in today's world. In-game ads have been doing that for several years now, and they have a MUCH tougher row to hoe in determining if ads are being viewed and for how long. (have to calculate player "view" position in the game world, etc.)
If losing the rating count is the ONLY "damage" complaint that the broadcasters have, Aereo can easily comply with their need for ratings info.
So decouple the rates from the ratings. Nielsen has been irrelevant for ages anyway. If you MUST use ratings, just use average rating by time slot. It's not THAT hard.
Strictly speaking, proving a statement or a position to be "factually wrong" merely requires showing the facts. NOT an "alternate" or "Contradicting" set of "facts".

Smoothwall does not require you to update anything. I ran mine on ver.1.5 for 5 years. At that point 3.0 was out. Never force upgraded me or required me to do anything.
Now, 3.0 DOES have a "cloudy" sort of feature to it, but it's completely optional. Just a freebie "value-add" thing. it's an open-source project, they know they can't get all control freak or they will lose their community.
As I noted though, you CAN use a low-powered "Micro" PC as long as it has at least two ethernet ports available. That will cut the power differential dramatically.
I just find it easier to go with the older machine I already have.
