I really don't know what matters anymore. I am going to have a child(found out yesterday). I work in the IT industry, because I thoroughly enjoy it, and it pays well. With the money that I make from work, I will spend on the family....that I will not have time to spend with, because I am trying to make more money.....its a vicious cycle. Kinda like:
I snort coke, to work longer hours, to make more money, to buy more coke, to snort coke, to work longer hours, to make more money, to buy more coke.........
I am a subscriber to ZoomTown in Cincinnati, OH. Bandwidth is great, it only took 3 days for everything to go through on their end. They don't even bitch about running services. They do filter port 23, however. I hypothesize because they don't want everyone telnetting to eact others dsl routers. For $30 a month, I don't think I can find a better deal.
Now that's just me. We Cincinnatians are lucky to have such a good telco (Cincinnati Bell owns ZoomTown). I know that Bell South runs a pretty good DSL service. I think the only way to find good broadband, is to move out of the sticks.
1) smoke. It's bad for your heart, lungs and arteries, among other things.
If I don't smoke, I will no longer be cool. 2) drink coffee/tea/Coke/Dr.Pepper. It's bad for your heart, among other things.
Bad for heart, good for staying awake.
3) eat sporadically. It's bad for your entire body.
Not everyone has the luxury of being able to sit down and have a healthy meal all the time.
4) stay awake late. If you don't have enough free time for sleep, cut down on work-time.
You obviously have no frame of reference to what the software industry is like.
Make sure you
1) tell your boss if you have too much/too little work to do.
You're fired.
2) have good breathing air. Open a window if not.
They tend to keep us techies in rooms with no windows
3) eat enough vegetables and fish.
I can have anchovies and jalepenos on my pizza, thank you very much
4) get enough sleep.
We have too much work to do. Sleep just interferes with our productivity.
5) listen to your own body
My body likes big paychecks
IT employees are not able to lead "normal" lives. We always have to carry pagers, cell phones, PDA's, etc. We have to code all night for a project that we spent 8 months on, only to start from scratch and do it again because someone in management wanted something different...the day before lauch date.
I am a Sys Admin, try to clear that with my boss...yuk, yuk, yuk. I know, I chose my position. I have no right to complain, I should find another job if it is too stressful, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I work for a startup company. Its fast paced. I work long hours. I worry about VC funding and wonder how much longer I will be there. Is IBM hiring Unix admins who hate AIX?
Interesting. NASA chooses Mickey Mouse to describe a project and they have plans to send probes to Pluto. It looks to me as if those evil, heartless Disney execs are planning yet another theme park. I wonder if employees of Neptu Disney World will bathe.
Gnutella is starting to feel the same scrutiny that napster is. The corporations that they mentioned that they would like to form alliances with, will probably take a pass on making any partnerships. At best, IBM, MS, Sun, etc. will probably try to buy the rights to gPulp, and then release it under their terms, integrate it with SMB, etc. and make it stupid.
Funny that you mention that. A co-worker of mine was a 26 year veteran of Bell Labs (who incidentally, invented Unix), and was part of a team whose purpose was to plan for the replacement of Unix with NeXT. This did not happen, due to Jobs shady OEM dealings. Just think...if Steve Jobs wasn't so greedy, we would probably no longer have Unix.
Have you ever heard the expression: "You can't get blood from a turnip"
If a person steals proprietary data for personal use, they either a. Don't care about the consequences, or b. are stupid. If a. is the case, then sue them, see what you can get out of them. Go for the Toyota Camry, and the $10K they have saved up. I am sure that will cover for the financial loss
Welcome to the USA....land of IP, and home of the grave. Void where prohibited by law. This offer not valid in Maine or Iowa. Some restrictions may apply, see store for details. The USA is not solely responsible for any damages incurred by use of the country. See Disclaimer below. Including but not limited to. We own everything. Don't use our stuff. We cover our butts for everything.
Who would sue them? Oh, a class action suit? The articles say that as of now, none of the potentially comprised card info has been used. Do you really think the 1337 D00d5 are going to use them with all of the media hoopla about the crack? I doubt it. WU will take a major loss of e-business over this, which will probably teach them not to be so careless next time. Plus everyone will forget this by Friday.
Perhaps credit card companies should now offer "hacker" insurance. Perhaps credit card companies should set up security criteria with commerce-related web sites for use of online credit transactions. After all, they are responsible for losses when your card is compromised.
The problem was discovered during a routine security check Friday, he said.
If their security checks are so routine, then why did this happen?

I don't use *nixes to deviate from the rest of society. I have recognized a need for more stability, scalability, etc. in an OS. I don't necessarily feel shunned. MS products don't offer what I need, so I seek alternatives. I do not do this to become a non-conformist.
Granted, I probably play D&D/Rifts/*.RPG because of the geek in me, but I refuse to believe that my life is based upon consciencious objection.

No, no, no, no, no.
We have to beat them at their own game. We need to start posh, pretty ad campaigns that have a lot of "hip pop culture" stuff in it. Give them our message, and subliminal messages to raise hell. This usually works. We need catch phrases and media. I hate to admit it, but we will have to align ourselves with the general public, and prey on their willingness to follow. *twiddles thumbs*
I don't really think 4 years of continued education is the only way to attain knowledge of the world. All I need to know about Kuala Lumpur can be read in the Cisco Router Configuration book.
I do believe that humans are well capable of forming intelligent thought without the assistance of a professor. I do agree that degrees are necessary in some fields, but the IT field is far too dynamic. Entry level courses in colleges which teach Pascal, COBOL, and Delphi are pretty useless.
If you don't have complete control over your code, how are you supposed to guarantee that the application will meet your standards?
I am sure that the consulting firm will not dump every programmer they have onto your project. It will be put in a queue, and picked up at a later date. There will have to be at least some man-power designated to work with the consultants.
You always have to consider the learning curve factor, but in this situation you should have a general overview of how the app works (or should work). It depends on how well it is documented...which programmers generally aren't good at.
You must buy groceries. You may shop in one of two places.
The first place is 5 miles away from you. They have the finest quality food, at the lowest price.
Your second option is in Malaysia. This store's selection does not equal the downtown store's, and is much more expensive. In addition, it will help you to expand your horizons to better adapt to different shopping experiences.
All you want is a frickin gallon of milk. What would you do?

Take up smoking. It will relax you and shave off those years that you would have to spend in management.

A friend of mine has the perfect solution. I am sure that he would be more than happy to co-locate one of their products with you, at no cost.
First order of business...make web site look less like an RFC.
I think our forefathers died for marketing.
if all I want is the server's OS and webserver....do I really need to make any more unnecessary keystrokes?
I have the right to. I have the skills to. I don't have a credit card database on my workstation.

The article states that they don't whether or not the credit card data was compromised.

Oh, I see now.

Its really up to the parents to control what comes into their house (in Utopian society, anyway).
