Well, IBM is who pulled microsoft out of mud and out of being completely nothing. ibm-dos, os/2 is what microsoft based their crappy ms-dos and windows over. As well, IBM platform became microsoft home and world of their dominance. And file formats they proprietarized first was most of IBM (f.ex. BMP and others).
Seems that the time, for putting microsoft back to where they came form, has come. I hope IBM will do it's best on this mission.
important is avoiding to use proprietary, closed file and streaming formats. sure, never ever using proprietary&closed libraries and modules, too. You know all the companies suffering (and only suffering) from using proprietary formats. Even the one i am working in. Everywhere around is stinking IIS exchange, doc and xls stuff.
Interesting, at least as GPU is realy a sort of DSP (Digital Signal Processor). And as i am deeply into both Audio and Brodaband signal processing hardware systems development, i find using those chips on the high performance video cards to be extremely useful in processing waveforms using the base of all of it - matrix calculations. It allows both FFT, iFFT, (of course DFTs and DCT and so on), as well es QMF, PQF filtring and synthesys.
I could dream to do hi-fi vocoder out of video card - crasy but interesting! =)
From the other hand, i think a little bit sceptical about all this, as it will not work even at half or third of its gflops performance, when not used for the "native application". This means it could, after some time and hellish efforts, show that "PAIN vs BENEFIT" ratio falls more and more to the pain side. I remember times i tryed to use 6510 cpu+8kbyts (dont remember exactly) ram inside c64 disk drive to process graphics in parallel with main pocessor. Efforts fell
And from the thrid point of view -- see how intel processors suck (~flamebait;) - "price>performance" like allways. Any small embedded chip outrivals it.
p.s. Still hold on for the coming of the FPGA;) I will do some article asap and post it neaar there, about what we could do about free&open computing on open hardware, not using proprietary chips.
Very extremely important is developing of new e-mail UI.. Especially when spending a decade of work on the research. We can see how their stoopid r&d sponges want to whitewash resources they spent on nothing.
Just take a look - they needede to do: field studies, statistical analyses of the structure of people's email, collections of email histories, traditional usability tests, focus groups, design explorations, stories and visionary design pieces, experimental tools that subjects could run using their own mail, and
directed functional prototypes that people can use for real work with their own mail.
..just to proove ONLY three self-evident (and yet solved as-much-as-possible by any email client, even ms-dos ones...) problems: 1.Pressure to Respond Quickly 2.Losing Track of Email 3.Overwhelming Volumes of Mail
..i wish i could do so much nothing and earn as muich as they do....
This is the future, i was shizoiding about in posts time ago. I use Xilinx FPGAs, which are both cheap and super powerful. For the company, i am woring for, i am developing digital signal poccessing processors and software for them using FPGA. one twenty dollar FPGA can process extremely high-order filters and analyzers on samplerates as high as hundred MHz, which we use for microwave communication in extremely baad environments.
With my addiction to open sources i am on developing a open-hardware computer (for a long time already)and will put online all sources, schematics, cerbers, layouts, so any Geeky guy (or Woman -- Jennifer E. Elaan? sorry if i am wrong) will be able to put together one, or buy components and ask somebody who can.
You would say You might need license for buying FPGAs used in by militaries for missle targeting (yes!) - then You would would be right. However there are no problem to by those in russia or anywhere else without having any license.
So hold on for a home-brew computer era coming back (from the times we were assembling Sinclair ZX Spectrums 16k and 48k at our homes:). How those computers will reincarnate from tv-calculators to plaforms being able to "process" (remove:) macrovizions, copyright bits on multiple streams, as well as directly capture satellite broadcast and process it.
Only drawback is that it will be with its own OS - BrainOS i am working on at te time. Just because it will be programmed not in sequential language, but parralel (VHDL) as it will be embedded in hardware (however modifiable by user at any time -- fpga!). We should be ready about that we could not (legally:) build any x86 on it, as we will have no license from intel. But i don't miss them. For running old x86 software and games we can use old x86 computers, which are widely available in trashmarkets.
asap i will try to do some artickle on this and try to post it there, that we could discuss what is ood and what is not).. Leave me some personal message if You are interested in it, so i could see how many of us are interested in this project. I hope it to be the same as linux is for software world, it could be for hardware world.
especially because i am having one k2000 v3 for a repair, and i am f*cking with it a month already. construction=idiotic, electronic=diletantic, sounds=nothing_special, features=many:) (for example you can use it as a keyboard stand stabilyzer, as their devices are waay heavy..)
no wonder - kurzweil have no footprints (legendary sounds) in history. and no wonder all the KRZs going around feature stolen sounds from Rolands and Korgs, or homebrew lo-fi's.
now they are trying to leve marks in history by patentic (process we love so much).
Well i find her to be not-so-baad. And before yelling here about ("i'd hit her" or "i'd do her"), i would first talk to her, and estimate her intellgence and interests.
i'm sure she might be extremely interesting and smart.
Just wanted to tell something good, in case if she, herself, gots there and finds all this mud about doing and hitting
I'm sure i wouldn't find it to be very pleasant. Also we should note that girls are subject to cry whenever possible, and reading most of these coment's might be cause of that.
people don't take it all too close to the heart. open-minded community strike is near.
more-or-less i am sure that i've got a brilliant idea which i will disclose as soon as it will be good enough. I am sure that _as_allways_ something open&free will born, which would outrival all and everything patented-licensed-royality-protected.
i will try to bring the idea/tech out for discussion at around christmas, i hope.
I posted a little later down about my intentions, which are more-or-less a year or two trying to become a reality. search for Sonic BrainOS in the thread.
It is what You are talking about.
And what we all have dreamed about, from times of apple][ and sinclairs.
Well, just read about FPGA's around in a middle.
"..The people who hack Verilog and other hardware
defintion languages are in such high demand and so highly paid that you're
not gonna find them diddling with free projects on the side very often...."
I'm professionally woring on baseband very high frequency signal analysis using Xilinx FPGAs. And i am very extremely addicted to open source community, and slashdot as well. I am on to do some my own site on lots of topics i would want to give around. Use of FPGAs yet is popular only amongst very expensive wirless communication hardware developers and militaries. One fewy bucks FPGA easily give GIGAFLOPS of performance. However it is hard to develop anything useful and work on it, and as well requires extreme deep knowledge of electronics, and digtal systems (for sure far more that any school, colledge, university or anything would teach). However, as we know, most of such people are addicted to open sources as well.;) this means that lots of us here could use these devices to do fantastic things.
BUT
High-Performance FPGAs normally are not for sale WITHOUT having appropriate license (without it You cannot by them!). *and* That is what does not allow everybody to enjoy the world of extreme processing.
BUT
for some time already i am on to develop a computer for geeks. open of course. which will be based on several FPGAs and i will grant everybody with all schematics and programms for them to make everybody electronically-crasy to create one at home, as soon as it gets required components (illegally they can be obtained:). That computer normal tasks will be realtime "manipulation" of "specific bits" (copyright bits:), and/or interception and processing/analysis of any kinds of anyways encoded streams, AND removal of fuckromedia from video tapes and records and so on.
completely building-brick technology
extreme flexibility
emulates any hardware, and in lots of cases works better then original one.
everything open
for startup it will use my own small realtime&consoled os (not ready yet) called so far Sonic BrainOS, but i am sure there will be a Linux port later;). However see more-or-less fundamental problems to make it work on a processorless computer.
intel processors are very lame piece of low-performance shit, and let's show it it's place.
well i am talking about a good compo, not this one. external files is a baad thing for a demo. just like causing a bluescreen with problem in opengl or directx and than fucking up all stoopid windows.
boo on windows. shouldn't compo use anything more clear and clean?
For sure! That's why i want that size limit in fact. If there is no limit - You can render all and just bring a player along with 30mb file with all the demo. 512k is sort of enough to put all textures, objects and samples for music with some simple compression.
And yes - main limit - demo must be only one file! [die windows!] annd no usage of exteral liraries and dll's allowed.
Otherwise i don't understand what's a demo - demo of direct X? silly&sick!
Well this contest is silly in it's basic concept. This all have reduced to about doing good decimate+dither+map&fit routine, which converts graphics to ascii. Moreover why the hell Windows (especially lame 2000!) are so much of a defacto? Very lame, veeery lame. And asking Windows Default Palette is even more lame.
I, myself, have dome pretty lot of ascii mode arts and demos back then, when i had a lovely Tandy CGA.
It was about art. And tweaking.
About Weaking ART. And Art of Tweaking.
I think, in some soon times i am gona try to organize, for first, extremely small contest, BUT using REAL CGA (With 8x8 letters REAL ascii font, and not "stripeful" 9x14/9x16) and RGBI REAL colors, and of course REAL blurry screen. And for DOS/LINUX - a pleace where REAL ascii-art lives! Maybe some size limitation might take place, like, for example 512kbytes.
However i am most likely to do some site on this topic and see what people will ask. The most problems might arrise with plugging CGA into pentiums-class stuff. I think i might do some budgetary small chipset CGA+ cards with PCI connectors, or something.
Second point is in using some pretty CGA HW emulation introducing all the image qualities to 19" FD Trinitrons and 19" LCD we use nowdays.
Additional words:
I love ascii gfx
I love tweaking fonts (why i made a reprogrammable-font card back then)
I love tweaking collors (why i made reprogrammable rgbi palette no cga gfx modes - few $ addon between monitor and card and connected to centronix port):)
Wanted to emphasize one little thing i've noticed
