The Columbia disaster was not due to a lack of computing power, but rather to a culture of denial. The failure of mid-level and senior management to listen to their people prevented any action being taken until it was too late. In a way, this mirrors the broader American culture of the late 20th and early 21st Centuries, typified by a complete refusal of individuals - particularly but not exclusively individuals in powerful positions - to take responsibility for their own actions, inactions or failures of any kind.

...actually it was Michael Palin who ran the Pet Shop in the sketch, and thus sold the parrot to John Cleese. It is possible that Chapman took that role in a live performance, but that wouldn't be the 'definitive' version.

LOL Dude, I sympathize, believe me. But this is slashdot - surely (and don't call me...) we can come up with a more elegant solution than a shotgun. I was thinking more of a car mounted directional harmonic frequency generator which automatically locks onto low frequency vibrations above a certain decibel level, shredding such boom tubes whenever they come within range...

What's worse, this flaw seems to have spread to the publishing industry as well. The last four or five books I have read (including history, science, fiction, and technical - from several different publishers) seem to be rife with errors such as using then (or even that!) instead of than. Just one more sign of the end of civilization...

Last time I checked, the only things you can do with money are spend it or not spend it. There are lots worse things it could be spent on. BTW, all your tax dollars allocated to space exploraton are spent right here on earth (on Europa they still don't take VISA), providing good high tech jobs and adding to sum of human knowledge.
