Men in general still earn more in many places, for horrible old fashioned reasons. Men are taller.

Do you see where I am taking this?

Do you think a Windows XPer or Mac OS 9er would know what the hell a man page is? BSD by default has a command line interface. That's enough to scare away 90% of windows users. Mandrake is a much better newbie OS than BSD.

I love BSD, but I wouldn't put it on my grans computer if she asked for a free software operating system (I doubt she would)

What I meant was linux is on its way to being a great desktop OS with the GPL behind it keeping others from stealing it. Look at what is happening with Mandrake and OpenOffice. It's becoming easier and easier. FreeBSD still has a text based install that would scare away any normal user and anybody with an MSCE.

I didn't mean to say BSD is dying as well. BSD is definately not dying. It has its uses.

But I wouldn't contribute code to BSD, because I know microsoft could use that in their products! With Linux, GNU etc I am safe in the knowledge that my code is protected by the GPL. I think the BSD liscence drives other programmers away too.

    *BSD is dying :).

Seriously, 4.8 release is much more stable than 5.1. Reviewing 5.1 is a bit dumb really. I've used both 4.8 and 5.1 and I have only had a few crash problems with my sound card driver on 5.1. Other than that they work perfectly.

Linux is still the ultimate free software desktop OS though. FreeBSD is good for hackers of all ages and servers, but definately not a desktop OS for newbies...
