Can I subscribe to my favourite celebrity table?
It would take all the hard work out of stalking.
Oooh Britteny likes cocoa pops sprinkled with amphetamines. I knew she would.
Well, your right of course and you make a good point. With this one though its like we are losing rather than winning. People carry on like its the computers which have done this, but really its people and as you say, we should be celebrating, rather than announcing our allegiance to our new computer masters. Having said that, let me just add this... GO KASPAROV:-).
Its ridiculous to say oooh the computer has beaten the human. Whats actually happening is that a human unassisted is being beaten by a team of humans using a tool (the computer). Computers are just tools. What this means is that us dumb humans have figured out a way to model what this really smart (well good at chess at least) human is doing. To me its about as big a deal as saying ooh the worlds strongest man just got beaten by a guy with a forklift truck.
This is probably going to make it even harder to collect all kinds of plastic toys to bring home for my kids. Are there other reasons to go to a conference?
I think its an outstanding idea. Time and time again people come up with breakthroughs in technology after they discover a different way of thinking. Seeing something in a different way is often the first step in that process. This kind of thing would be an ideal candidate for a seti-at-home like solution where people use their screen savers to map their local area. Imagine how cool it would be to see the throughput over that map as well.
Lawyer: Mr Stallman, can you explain what GNU is?
Stallman: Gnu's Not Unix
Lawyer: Yes, Mr Stallman, but can you please answer the question.
Stallman: Gnu's Not Unix
ad infinitum.
What I see is that the business model where you give away the software and make people pay for higher levels of service works fantastically well. Redhat didnt get to be huge because they did things badly. But when you introduce greedy greedy shareholders they just cant stand the thought of missing out on any money and they squash it. If free software is such a bad business model why did Netscape go from being the humungous company it was to basically nothing at all when it was trying to sell its browser and almost everyone was using it. Then microsoft started GIVING AWAY explorer and they stole the market. Hey thats free software too, but you don't get the security and transparency of getting the source as well.
Actually given the dot bombs over the last few years I think you could equally state that the shareholder/commercial IT company model was a failure also.
Maybe Microsoft actually made an obvious decision.
My guess was that it was a no brainer as it would cost more to _not_ support linux. But of course slashdotters always see the worst in anything, and they are always so incredibly arrogant that they assume that Microsoft would never make even an obvious simple decision correctly. Honestly this site gets pretty tiresome after a while. Bitch Bitch Bitch. Well let me be the first to say its a great idea and its great to see that the idea of virtual operating systems is really taking off.
why not put them in a detention centre.
I for one 'don't like it', and I call upon
all retired judges and lawyers to come to the
aid of anyone who faces such charges.
Microsoft have audited or threatened to audit two companies I have worked with in the last year or so. Many companies dont really know what they have paid for or even how many computers they own. These audits are great for people selling inventory management software.
They have a similar thing here in Sydney in one of the tall buildings. When your going up your lift has a tv in it showing the person going down. Typically they will make rude signs at you and theres nothing you can do about it. There should be more of this. People take themselves far too seriously these days.
Sure they have soul, but they dont have rhythm and blues.

I wonder what it would be like to have two opposable thumbs.

How do they actually work out how much sound would pulverise a human skeleton? I bet Nasa has a whole file on that.

And when you get them back you can use them to make Vegemite
Good luck surviving heart attack, cancer and road accidents for 500 years.

Hmmm, I think they just want better mobile phone reception inside their mini subs.
I don't like the idea of putting something which gets very hot inside a well insulated wooden box.
Cool, maybe now I can get a dns style address for my phone number that won't have to change when I move houses, or change countries.
