  1. the query "search" on Amazon's Search Engine Goes Live · · Score: 1

try typing the single-word query "search" in a search engine. There's only one that seems to place themselves at the top of the list. I think they all have an inferiority complex (as they should).

  2. changing jobs is a wonderful experience on Using Employee-Owned Technology in the Workplace? · · Score: 1

Life is too short to work for idiots. Companies that work this hard to control their employees have clearly lost their ability to foster a good work environment. I think it's time to either move on, or else make a judgement about the moron who is promoting this policy. If you're lucky maybe they'll join the army or have a stroke.

  3. "powerful business interests" are not all the same on Lessig On IP Protection, Conflict · · Score: 3, Insightful

I am often surprised by the tendency to generalize in the media (including slashdot). One of the most conservative companies in the IT industry is IBM. I wonder how people are able to deal with the fact that they are both a very active supporter of Linux, while at the same time working very hard to protect their own intellectual property in the form of patents and software. The "free" software world seems to want to make this into some kind of intellectual war, but the reality seems much more complicated. While it's convenient to make statements like "you're either with us or against us", the reality is that some people are more pragmatic than others. I would hope that the IT world doesn't become as divided as the political world, and statements that lump all companies into a unified force are too simplistic to be taken very seriously. The same goes for the open source software movement.

If we all have something in common, I suspect we could identify it as respect for creativity.

  4. Can-Spam on Nominations for 2003 Vaporware Awards · · Score: 1

If ever there was a candidate among the products of the US Congress, it would have to be the Can-Spam legislation. Even the name is suggestive - they want make it so that corporations and traditional marketing organizations "can spam". If ever there was a product that will produce nothing to relieve email users, this is it.

  5. death of working cell phones in the USA? on Death of the PDA? · · Score: 1

I don't really care if some people buy cell phones that incorporate PDA functionality. I don't own a PDA and I don't want one. I DO own a cell phone and I'd like to use it to make voice calls. Unfortunately as long as AT&T pushes customers to their US GSM network, the probability that you can make a voice call in many parts of the country goes down. I'm sick of having non-phone features crammed into phones while voice service gets worse. Do these guys remember that they are selling phones?
